Chapter One: The Men-of-the-Lake

The kingdom of Sacramento was in chaos. The peasants were revolting, demanding rights and wearing their purple cloaks every Wednesday while they paraded up and down the streets before the Palace, shouting and waving dead chickens on poles at the King and his counselors whenever they dared to glance out any of the windows. Dark lords from the Land of Oil had stolen two of the royal dragons and flown them into the Palace of King Davis close friend, King Giuliani of New York. The magic that had been lighting and warming the homes of the people of Sacramento was running out.

King Davis paced the well-worn wooden floor of his study, chewing his lip and muttering to himself.

College papers on Books A young man poked his head through the open door, "King Davis? The Men-of-the-Lake have crossed our borders and burned three small towns."

The King glanced up, his already troubled face clouding over for a moment, the small spark that had been in his eyes faded. "The…the Men-of-the-Lake? Sirown, are you sure?" His voice was tight with fear.

The young man licked his lips uneasily. "Yes, the scouts say they are headed this way, led by a large man who calls himself Sir Shaq and his wizard, Sir Phillip Jackson. "

"Where are they now?"

"Santa Cruz, sir." The Sirown fidgeted. "Perhaps we should rally an army to meet them?"

The King looked out the window over his kingdom. "No, we would only slaughter innocent lives, our peasants know nothing of war and all of our knights are in New York. Our only hope is to surrender." He glanced at the young man, "Santa Cruz, you say? They should be here by tomorrow morning."

The Sirown bit his lip, "what are your orders?"

"Do nothing, the Men-of-the-Lake are too strong for us, especially with our knights gone." The King ran his hands through his hair, making it stand on end, "tell no one of the Men-of-the-Lake. We dont need a full on panic on our hands, things are bad enough."

"Yes, sir," the young man turned and left, shutting the door behind him. He stopped at the top of the stairs and leaned against the railing, gazing out the window at the lush green valley that would soon be overrun with the Men-of-the-Lake. The Sirown put his head in his hands, "we are lost."

A tall man in a black cloak that hid his face slipped out from behind the tapestry on the wall and dashed down the stairs as silently as a cat.

1-145

1. How was everyday life initain affected by the wartime conditions with challenges like "the blitz"?

"Blitzkrieg"- lightning war, a swift intensive attack designed to defeat the opposition quickly.

College papers on the home front "You must not be taken by surprise", warned a Ministry of Information leaflet issued as the threat of invasion loomed initain. Long before the waroke out families were introduced to gas masks, air-raid drill and bomb shelters, and mass evacuations were planned. The blitz affected the lives of men, women and children. Preparations for the war were stepped up in august 1. Upon the declaration of war, the BBCoadcasted on the radio thatitain is now in the state of war as the Germans are invading Poland, even though having been given an ultimatum. On the rd September at 11.00 theitish declared war.itain was once more at war.

Evacuations soon took place thereafter. Over three million people had left their homes even before the war was declared. In September alone, at least a quarter of the population also moved, they included up to 5,000 civil servants. All these people had to be housed, they were either sent aoad or to the countryside.

This war was going to affect everyone. Some of the first to suffer were the TV viewers. Watching a Mickey Mouse cartoon on September 1st. The service suddenly shut down and stayed off the air until 146. The blackout which began the same evening did affect everyone. No one was allowed to have light shining from a house. The aim was to make it more difficult for the German bombers to spot their targets.

Street lights were turned off; so were neon signs and shop lights. Everybody had to travel in darkness, all windows had to be blacked out with thick curtains, or anything else that people could get hold of. People disliked the blackout, with good reason. A survey showed that nearly one in five million people had an accident in the first four months.

Everybody was also expected to carry a gas mask at all times. Along side the gas mask you also had to carry your identity cards, which had to be shown on demand. Some children wore numbered metalacelets. Incomes were cut, in 1; people could still buy as much food as they wanted as long as they could afford it.itain imported a lot of food in 1, less got in during the war. German submarines attacked shipsinging in food from America. Some food were in short supply, as the rationing began, it made sure everybody had equal amounts and that a fair share of the food was distributed amongst the people.

Due to the air-raids the government issued shelters for people at their homes. First the Anderson shelter was "born", you needed to have a garden for this and less than 5% had one. Nearly 1.5 million shelters were distributed for free in September 1. As this didnt work that well, they introduced the Morrison shelter, which was a steel mesh box, accommodating adults and children. Over a million were issued.

ARP (Air Raid Precautions) was set up to cope with the problem that bombing caused. They went off when the sir raid sirens went off. They wore helmets with a white "W" on the front and went to check everybodys lights were dimmed, and that they were off the streets. Slogans like "make-do-and mend", and "dig for victory" were used to help people be cautious with the way they live, and to try and help themselves.

The lives of everybody was rapidly changed, although the war had its downsides, it bought communities together helping them to help themselves and each other. Everyday life was dearly affected; men, women and children all helped with the war efforts.

. What role did the media play in the war effort on the home front?

Bombing raids, petrol shortages and blacked-out streets all meant that people spent a lot of their evenings at home. The radio served as a lifeline and just about everyone crowded round their set to listen to the nine oclock news on the BBC Home Service. There were many childrens programmes, helping them to get through the chaos of life during the blitz. For the adults the humorous comedy ITMA (Its That Man Again) - was a true phenomenon of wartime entertainment. Fast-moving, packed with wise-cracks and dottilyitish, the show proved more of a morale booster than any government propaganda.

To escape the claustrophobic atmosphere at home, people went to the movies. They were prepared to queue for hours to get in every week and in wartimeitain some 5-0 million cinema tickets were sold each week. The big picture houses with their grandiose names Majestic, Palace, Alhama created dream worlds where for a few pence the dark streets and bombs could be forgotten.

The propaganda targeted the newspapers, news was censored and papers only published what government wanted them to. The same was true on radio and cinema newsreels. Sometimes the news was kept secret because it might help the enemy. Weather reports; stopped during the war. Propaganda also involved drumming a message home; the government had lots of these for theitish people. Many appeared as newspaper adverts or on cinema screens. But, most of all, it was achieved by posters. Hoardings were everywhere, filled with government posters. Each one had its slogan; each had something to do with the war effort. Perhaps the most famous was "careless talk costs lives". The government was worried that there might be enemy agents living secretly initain. Sp people were told not to talk about anything in public which might help the enemy.

Order your Affecting change in the business environment paper at affordable prices! MIT professor-consultant Michael Hammer calls peoples innate resistance to change "the most perplexing, annoying, distressing, and confusing part" of the change process. Nevertheless, our text points out, resistance must be overcome or the change cannot take place.

The reasons people are resistant to change include

Loss of security since the familiar is where we are all most comfortable. Taking away familiarity threatens security and thereby creates resistance;

Fear of economic loss which comes about because of the aforementioned loss of security and also because the change may actually require layoffs or reduced wages;Loss of power and control as happened in many of the different changes that took place in my previous company. In some cases, reorganization calls for power to shift;

Reluctance to change old habits "Old habits die hard" is a saying that rings very true in business. People become very programmed and then reluctant to learn new processes;

Selective perception where an employee thinks in terms of stereotypes such as a belief that change occurs because of a desire to promote a negative agenda; or

Awareness of weaknesses in the proposed change when staff members objections can be based upon fact which, if communicated clearly and early enough in the process, can help management make necessary adjustments to the proposed change.

Management can more easily facilitate change through

Participation by making staff feel more a part of the entire change process they will feel less threatened by it and take more of an ownership in the process.

Open communication Clearly communicated information along each step of the change process from start to finish is crucial to preventing mistrust and rumor. Withholding information is a very big mistake when undertaking change. Managers should treat people like adults and tell them the truth. "When trust is high, communication is effortless." (Covey)

Advance warning Sudden change is very unsettling for everybody. Whenever possible, all employees who will be affected by a change should be given as much notice about that change as possible.

Sensitivity Management must always be vigilant about the fact that those affected by a change may have unvoiced concerns or fears. An effort to learn about the feelings of all those affected should be made.

Security When management is able to truthfully reassure staff that change will not involve dire consequences, this will remove a good deal of resistance. This, however, can only be employed when job security is known not to be an issue regarding a given employee.

Additionally, management considering change should be on firm footing regarding that change by making sure they will continue to utilize their core competencies, they use the appropriate steps and agents to change, have the appropriate resources (time, money, staff, etc.) necessary for the change to be successful, properly assess and explain the need for change, and make the change at an appropriate time (during an economic downturn would be a bad time to try to affect change involving considerable investment of monetary resources). By being secure on all levels regarding the change that will take place, management can easily project a positive attitude about the adjustments that will be made, thereby helping to garner to approval of staff.

Order your The Rensiassance was a period within itself paper at affordable prices! The question is "Was the Renaissance, with its unique advances, a period distinct from the Middle Ages or was it a continuation-the high point-of the Middle Ages?" The most reasonable answer to that question would be that the Renaissance was a period distinct from the Middle Ages. In the next few paragraphs there will be documents and reasons proving this thesis correct.

The Renaissance was a definite period of time within itself with new different features coming into terms. One feature that sticks out would be the rival of art and education. A document that supports this revival would be Document 1. Document 1 tells of the revival after 100 years of cultural sterility. The Renaissances revival of art came along with new influences for art, influences such as Gothic, Roman, Greek, medieval darkness and classical standards. Another document providing support for this revival would be Document 6. Document 6 provides an artists in depth search to find all about the body to make his art more realistic. Thus proving a new revival of art and its techniques, for example in Document 6 Leonardo da Vinci proves to us that the Renaissance truly was a time where art was greatly encouraged. As for literature, Document 8 proves that during the Renaissance education was greatly encouraged. As one can see if you compare the number of new Universities founded in the 1-1th Century compared to the 15th Century one could see a great increase in Universities. Also, during the Renaissance there were many new artists emerging that still influence our culture today. Artists such as Michelangelo Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci painted pieces of art that are still greatly admired today.

The Renaissance was also a time of individual development and a step back from the influence of religion. For example, in Document it tells one about how humans were disillusioned into thinking they were part of a group and not an individual. But once the Renaissance came around man became to know themselves as individuals. An example of a step back from the influence of religion would be in Document 4. Document is saying that during the Middle ages our concern was more on the Gods and impressing then but our concern should have been to first care for mortal things, in which that goal was achieved during the Middle Ages. Also, a step back from religion occurred in art as well. A perfect example would be the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa was a piece of art that had nothing to do with religion when most pieces before that time had everything to do with religion. Also, during that time humanists rallied for a step back to the classical ways of the Church when religion was not involved in government proving that even the people knew it was time for the Church to step back from political affairs.

In conclusion the question was the Renaissance, with its unique advances, a period distinct from the Middle Ages or was it a continuation-the high point-of the middle Ages?" was answered. The answer being that the Renaissance was a period distinct from the Middle Ages. This answer was proves with examples of revival of art, revival of education, a new found step toward individual development and a step back form the influence of religion.

As a child growing up in a house with six siblings, I had the option of playing with many toys. From toy cars and Nintendo to Barbie dolls and tea sets we had it all, yet, everyone had a favorite. My younger sisters were thrilled to play with Barbie dolls and my older sisters were content just talking on the phone for hours. I dont recall having a favorite toy, but I know that my favorite past time was playing "town".

My family lives in a two-story house. We lived upstairs. Downstairs is basically a two-bedroom apartment, however, it is not separated from the rest of the house. You simply walk down a flight of stairs to get to the second floor.

Our family lived upstairs and my mother made downstairs our "apartment". We had a toy room, a den, two closets full of my mothers old clothing, two spare bedrooms and a kitchen. Our kitchen was equipped with an old stove and refrigerator, which was not connected to the electrical circuit. When my parents moved upstairs they bought new appliances, so we were free to play with the old ones. We had two power wheel cars, aown truck and a black sports car. So naturally, playing "town" was a big past time for us. During the summer our neighbors would come down everyday to play. I normally was the mother and my younger sister was my daughter and we always did the cooking. Myother, Sylvester, was the father. He owned the only bank in the town so whenever you needed a loan you had to go to him. My neighbors Zina and Ashley owned the gift store. We would get all of our old toys in one room and pretend to buy them. When I could beg my older sisters enough they would sometimes play too. My oldest sister, Laurie, would be a judge and Nathalie, would own the post-office.

We played masculine and feminine roles while we were playing "town". As the wife, I had to have dinner ready when my husband came home. I stayed at home and took care of the kids. Whenever we went out myother would drive the car. We observed our parents and grandparents and mimicked what they did. However, we knew that women also worked outside the home, because my mother was a nurse, my grandmother worked at a bank and my aunt worked at the post-office. So when playing house we also claimed those roles.

As little kids we did not understand what femininity and masculinity was. All we knew was that myother would not wear a dress or cook, and he wouldnt let me drive when he was in the car. We did know that there were jobs that the man did and tasks the woman performed, but in all honesty we thought that whatever the man did the woman could also do. My father drove, worked and paid bills, however, my mother drove, worked paid bills, cooked, cleaned and took care of the children. So I thought that the woman could do anything that a man could do.
