Chapter One: The Men-of-the-Lake

The kingdom of Sacramento was in chaos. Dark lords from the Land of Oil had stolen two of the royal dragons and flown them into the Palace of King Davis close friend, King Giuliani of New York. The magic that had been lighting and warming the homes of the people of Sacramento was running out.

King Davis paced the well-worn wooden floor of his study, chewing his lip and muttering to himself.

The King looked out the window over his kingdom. "No, we would only slaughter innocent lives, our peasants know nothing of war and all of our knights are in New York. Our only hope is to surrender." He glanced at the young man, "Santa Cruz, you say? They should be here by tomorrow morning."

The Sirown bit his lip, "what are your orders?"

"Do nothing, the Men-of-the-Lake are too strong for us, especially with our knights gone." The King ran his hands through his hair, making it stand on end, "tell no one of the Men-of-the-Lake. We dont need a full on panic on our hands, things are bad enough."

"Yes, sir," the young man turned and left, shutting the door behind him. He stopped at the top of the stairs and leaned against the railing, gazing out the window at the lush green valley that would soon be overrun with the Men-of-the-Lake. The Sirown put his head in his hands, "we are lost."

A tall man in a black cloak that hid his face slipped out from behind the tapestry on the wall and dashed down the stairs as silently as a cat.
