The Great Santini

The Great Santini is a very powerful, gut-wrenching movie which portrays the life of a martinetish Marine, Bull Meechum and his family. The self- proclaimed Great Santini and his wife, Lillian have four children Ben, Mary Anne, Karen and Matthew. Bulls position as a Marine pilot has resulted in a numerous variety of relocations, and hardships on his family. The school-aged children are all searching for an identity for themselves while simultaneously learning where they fit in the family dynamic.

The Meechum family is similar to many other families in a limited number of ways. The siblings often tease and bicker with each other naturally, while every member of the family shows the utmost respect for Bull and his position in the family. Although the family demonstrates characteristics of a "normal" family in some aspects, much of their behavior represents dysfunction. The actions and beliefs of this family maintain the levels of dysfunction in a vast number of ways. Primarily, it is revealed that everyone in the family is afraid of Bull in one way or another, and the respect that is shown to him is a result of his position in the military and not due to their love for their fathers personal qualities. It might be suggested that Bull is more of a military officer than a father figure or a loving husband. This can be demonstrated in his effort to physically abuse his wife for questioning him. Further dysfunction is represented when Lillian comes to the defense of Bull, claiming that harsh words never hurt anyone.

The Great Santini -

Bens position of the oldest son leads him to receive the prime attention of his father in most instances. Bull expects Ben to strive to be just like him, and uphold the same interests as his father. In one instance in the movie Ben talks to his father about his disinterest in fighting with the Marine Corps in attempt to address his own desires. Bull responded by telling Ben that he would be just like his father, and solidified this demand by presenting Ben with his pilot fighter jacket on his eighteenth birthday.

The excessive attention given to Ben minimizes the attention available for the remaining children and Bulls own wife, leaving them striving in any possible way to gain the interest of The Great Santini. This can be affirmed by Bulls disinterest in his youngest daughter, Karens high achievement English essay. Further confirmation comes from his emotionless departure following Mary Annes claim of being impregnated by a black, Pacifist, homosexual, an obviously unacceptable decision according to Bulls teachings. Additionally, it appears that Lillian is attempting to forge a good, healthy relationship by receiving attention from Ben in replacement of her husbands negliance. Regardless of the minimal attention given to the children, Bull made it clear that Meechum children "get the best grades, win awards, and excelled in sports". It was apparent that Bull wanted his family to be recognized as the best by others even if he couldnt do it himself.

In addition to Bulls dysfunctional interpersonal relationships, he has some harmful personal qualities that affect him individually, along with his family. Bulls commanding officer suggested that Bull is on his way to becoming an alcoholic, if he

The Great Santini -

isnt one already. This point is further illustrated when one of Bens teammates mentions that he knows an alcoholic when he sees one, as Bull barges into the mens locker room in effort to prep Ben for the basketball game. Nevertheless, Bull takes Ben out for drinks on his eighteenth birthday and encourages him to drink until the point where he cant even stand up to hear the rest of his family singing Happy Birthday to him. Alcohol plays a significant part in the life of Bull Meechum in that the only time anyone has heard any expression of personal emotion from him, was after drinking.

Bull has major difficulty in expressing personal feelings toward others, and refrains from doing so in any way. Additionally, Bull illustrates a fear of having people know him as a person. When Mary Anne attempts to have a conversation with her father he responds by admitting that he doesnt want anyone to get to know him. Furthermore, Lillian advises her children to assess their fathers mood by interpreting signals that he gives off in substitution for his words. Bulls inability to apologize was exemplified in the movie when Bull began practicing basketball while his family was sleeping, in an unconscious effort to admit previous defeat to his son. Ultimately, Bull placed power and respect at a higher level of importance than developing close interpersonal relationships with his family.

Besides Bulls influence, the Meechum family was also influenced by gender and culture. The influences of a white, southern, Baptist, military family were prevalent in all aspects of the movie. The most influential characteristic represented was gender. As a result of being the oldest male child, Ben was assumed to be the one to follow in his

The Great Santini 4-

fathers footsteps. On many occasions Bull challenged Bens manhood by bullying and threatening him. At one point in the movie Bull questions Ben about "having no gonads", and further admonishes Lillian for being too gentle with him. During a fight that took place at a school basketball game between a member of the other team and Ben, Bull advises Ben to retaliate and fight back or not come home. On another occasion, while playing basketball against each other Bull begins taunting Ben after being defeated by him. He attempts to provoke Ben into being aggressive and fighting back, or crying like his "favorite little girl". Finally, the importance of being male is solidified when Mary Anne asks her father if girls can be Meechums.

It was during this same conversation that Mary Anne tested her father for a reaction or at the very least some attention, by claiming to be impregnated by a black, Pacifist, homosexual. Mary Anne was aware that her father had very strong feelings toward all of the characteristics that she just mentioned. When the Meechums housekeeper happens to be black it becomes even more apparent that Bull and his family are racist. To further show this nonacceptance, Bull mentions asking Arrabella to check for silverware in her purse. Bull made many comments regarding prejudices toward race or culture in addition to the number he made in effort to belittle homosexuals, including calling his son a "little homo" for sleeping naked.

Although some of these prejudices may have resulted from the Baptist religious background the family practiced faithfully, it is apparent that Bull is very unaccepting of any viewpoints different from his own. He even questioned why God would put so many

The Great Santini 5-

different churches in the world at the same time. The entire Meechum family participated in prayer activity and said their Hail Marys regularly, however it may be suggested that Bull overdid it when he demanded that his new military trainees refer to him as God. Bull Meechum allowed his gender, religion, race and position in the military along with his power to define his life.

This family can be easily understood by using Bowen Theory. Fusion is the most significant concept relating to both the theory and the movie. Throughout the movie it becomes more and more apparent that Bull wants his son to be just like him. Bull has planned out Bens life for him, and assumes that Ben wants to follow in his footsteps as planned. This aspiration is so predominant that Ben actually begins to become exactly like his father. Bull even says to Ben, "I wish you a wife like your mother, and a son as good as youve been" to further solidify the resemblance between their lives. There are several circumstances in the movie to represent this relationship between a father and a son. The most obvious example is represented by the chaos created by Bens decision to defy his fathers orders in attempt to save Toomers life. Bull interprets this behavior as unacceptable and reprimands Ben for not following his orders to which Ben replies by ironically stating that he was only doing what his father would have done in the situation.

In relation to the previous concept of fusion, another main idea of this theory corresponds to two life forces, being autonomy and togetherness. This is richly demonstrated in the Meechum family dynamics in that they are regarded mainly as descendents of their father and not as individuals comprising the family. Bull has

The Great Santini 6-

decided Bens future will be similar if not identical to his own. Ben will become a pilot in the military and will fight others for power and respect. When Ben defies his father, Bull makes a statement "not me…. You…" in effort to separate Bens actions from his own, Ben responds by saying that he did what a Meechum would have done, ultimately supporting the togetherness of the family. Additionally, the "elephant in the living room", being Bulls physical and mental abusive tendencies are a family secret that continues to bond the family together.

Furthermore, Bowen theorists would recognize the dichotomy of thinking and feeling represented by Bull. There was an unbalanced relationship between the two, in that Bull relied only on thinking when around his family. It wasnt until he consumed alcohol that Bull was able to admit to feeling. This relationship is unhealthy because it is not balanced appropriately.

Alcohol also plays a major part in the family dynamics in that it was a topic of familial repression; something nobody wanted to talk about. When Ben overheard his father talking to himself while drunk one night, it led to insight regarding Bull and his emotions. It is ironic that this is the situation in which Ben begins to understand his father and ultimately changes his feelings of hatred towards his father to love for him.

Additionally, the increased attention placed on Ben, being a male and the oldest child creates a triangle between Bull, Ben and Lillian. This is a very highly charged, dynamic triangle in which the other children are left out of, which leads to less differentiation. This is the most important triangle portrayed in the movie because it

The Great Santini 7-

deals with the way Lillian and Ben interact and the way Bull and Ben interact. Furthermore, Ben is put in the middle of his parents relationship.

After the physical fight between Lillian and Bull a lot changes in the Meechum house. When Ben comes to his mothers aid and stands up to his father, they get into a physical confrontation only to beoken up, ironically by the other children in the house. This is surprising because up until this point they have had nothing to do with the relationships involved in the triangle; there was an outside party to help detriangulate, and Bull left the house. When Lillian finally convinced Ben to look for his father he overhears the feelings of Bull, and immediately begins to understand him. After listening to his fathers emotions they are able to fuse emotional ties together. Once Ben is able to see into Bulls emotions it makes things a lot easier at home allowing everyone to see that their father is a person.

However, once Bull dies it becomes apparent that the togetherness is still prevalent when Lillian tells the children that they are not allowed to cry or show emotion at their fathers funeral. A further representation of fusion also takes place when Ben and his family pack up and leave for their new home at three oclock in the morning. It is obvious that although Bull has died, a part of him still lives in Ben.

Through out history, the search for immortality seemed to be an

obsession for many men and women. They wanted to go beyond the

limitations of their mortal existence ad have everlasting life. Which the main

Online writing services offer help on Gilgamesh character, Gilgamesh, from the "Epic of Gilgamesh" was looking to find.

But in trying to find his immortality, he uses arrogance and irresponsible

judgments, but by the end he becomes smarter and learns the true meaning of life.

In the epic, Gilgamesh uses arrogance and irresponsible (bad)

judgments when he keeps onagging to others that he is better than

everyone else. Since he is two- thirds god and one- third man, he is more

superior and has the right to treat people anyway he wants to. His disrespect

and harsh treatments are similar to sicknesses because even though the

people of Urak are fed up with Gilgamesh, they go through the pain. From

all his cruel acts the people end up resenting him. So they call the gods for

help, in response they create Enkidu who is supposed to help them. Once

Enkidu witnessed the kind of abuse, Gilgamesh was imposing on his people,

he had to step in. He issued a challenge to Gilgamesh, they fought furiously,

and Enkidu lost. So instead of actually helping the people of Urak, he sort of

betrays them because he and Gilgamesh become best friends. They were

very devoted to each other. Gilgamesh was very ambitious, especially for

glory. So he undertook a battle with the Cedar Forest guardian, Humbaba, in

order to rid the land of evil and create a name for himself.

He killed Humbaba and from this action he was known world wide.

Ishtar, the goddess of love, became infatuated with Gilgamesh. She wanted

him to be her love slave, but instead he declined. He didnt want to be in any

kind of relationship with her. In revenge, she told the gods to send the Bull

of Heaven down to destroy Urak and Gilgamesh, but the Bull of Heaven is

killed by Gilgamesh and Enkidu. When they killed the bull, they totally

disrespected the gods, so as a punishment they put a curse on Enkidu. It

eventually took his life.

The most important part of the epic, was when Enkidu died.

Gilgamesh went into a deep depression because he didnt want to believe that

his friend, who was almost like aother to him, was dead. He couldnt

cope, it had put him over the edge. Enkidu was the most important person in

his life. But because Gilgamesh cared for Enkidu so deeply, he found a way

to get over his death by searching for immortal life.

Gilgamesh really searches for immortality because he is scared of

dying. He didnt want to go through the things Enkidu went through. Now

that he was looking for everlasting life, he valued others around him and

didnt take them for granted. He became unselfish and fond of all people

even those not like him, his people in a sense. This was a sight you would

not have seen, if he didnt meet Enkidu. Enkidu had a great influence over

Gilgameshs life. This influence changed his whole view of life.

The worth of a mans life is many times said to be measured by the

things he has done and the legacy he has left behind. After realizing, he

wasnt a god-man, he saw that the real glory came from passing your name

on. But in order to receive glory you had to do many good deeds and affect

people in a tremendous way. While on his journey, he gained a lot wisdom.

He learned that people dont live forever and everyone mortal has to come to

the point, where they go on to live in a better place, or not. He also learns

that you cant always get the things you want. And when you do want

something, it doesnt come easily; you have to go up against obstacles and

fight for what it is you want. Gilgamesh does fight for what he wants, by

going down into the cold water and retrieving a plant that would give him

immortal life. But when he found the plant, he thought that all the hard times

had ceased and hed accomplish his goal. But once again he faced trials and

tribulations. A serpent, such as the one from the bible, had taken the plant

from him and eaten it. He had failed, and he knew from that point on what

would happen to him when he returned home, "Death". But when he died I

think that he was ready to die. Because if I had the chance to become

immortal and you already had the plant that could ensure it, I would have

eaten the plant as soon as I retrieved it from the water. He didnt, I believe it

was because he wanted to share his immortality with Enkidu, but since he

was dead he couldnt and he would be alone forever. And I believe that he

thought being alone was even worst than death. No one wants to be utterly alone.

During the 15th and 16th century Renaissance Education was beginning to

prosper thoughout Englang and the rest of the world, during those two centuries of

out past. Many were taught by great philospheres of our time, and thisought the

Custom writing service offers papers on Renaissance 16th and 17th best learning of the day. During the 15th and 16th, school children were taught

different subjects than what we learn today.

There are many things that are similar and different between the young

children of the renaissance, and the children of the 1st century. Is that normal

people learned to write and to read and to calculate.(Autorbis1) In England,

France, and Low Countries. Commoners were getting more education than the

young men that was in the upper-classmen (Autorbis). Commoners parents

whose could afford Guild entry fees were able to apprentice towards the end of the

Middle Ages.(Google1)The Renaissance was a period of which education for

young men in mathematics and classical became widespread (scrarboroughhren1).

The interest in the culture of acient Greece and Rome was revived

(scrarboroghern1-). Theyought many differenct educators to introduce a new

learning to the young men. Schools were taught subjects as science, hsitory,

geography, music and physical training (scarboroghren1). These popular subjects

serve as example for educators for more 400 years later.

The important of science was set forth in the writing of the 16th cenutry as

told by (Bacon) who stressed the priciple of learning. One of the major influence

that made renaissance education what it is, Charlemagne. Charlemange gathered a

group of the most scholary men whom he could find for England and through out

the world. Alcujin from England, Peter of Tuscany, Paul the Lombard, Theodulph

of the Visigoths and Engihhard from the Rhineland.(Durant487) These men were

as you say creative thinkers of their time, representing the best education of the

15th century time(Durant487). They were taught based on tradition and moral of

scholar.(Durant487). Charlemagne was excited about the letters tha he was

recieving for young boys to want to go to his new school . To get educated and to

make something of themselves. Children were writing to the bishop and Abbots

to learn more about Charlemagne school. (Durant488)

Other resources that they use was the bible, and manuscripts. Care was

taken to obtain the most corrects readings of thess manuscripts and were copied in

order for the young men to recite and know the bible and other writing,

Charlemagne was not a scholar, he couldnt even write nothing more and his name

(Durant76) But he possessed a vast information of which his inquiring mind had

stored up for the future in education(Durant76). Many of his education came

from observation and experience, from traveling and of course begin questionable

(Durant77)

In this day of age, Children of young age are willing to go to school and are

excited to learn more of science, physic, other mathetical equations that they can

get a hold to. Subjects like those that a mented are still to this day are taught by

some of our educators at have recieved there teacher certification and are well

equiped toward making our young children of the future well educated.

It was not eough for others to get into the act of education in the

renaissance, and just like a lot of teachers , they only understood Latin. So Alfred

begun the translation classes and books translated into English lit.

(Changberlin65) The Consolation fo philosophy by Boethius, Bedes

Ecclesiatical History of the English Nation, part of the books made it easlier to

teach(Mills8). He also use Psalms, and many other books were put into english.

He contiuned the Anglo-Saxon Chronicals, a history for English. (Mills8) In his

reign (King Alfred) made it become a fuller narrative of life, full interest after his

death it was continued until the end of the eleventh century.

In this century teachers use the same literary as those of the renaissance

centries. Teachers of the 1 century have adopted the learning of the renaissance

era. even though the teachers and children were mostly taugh in churches or some

building that was made by some famous person (kings or philosophers) who made

a contribution in making learning more fun for the children of the renaissance and ours.

The common idea that, the renaissance had was there was such thing as a

totally illiterate person, and that going to school would prevail things like

illiteracy thoughout the Middle Ages and the nation (Mills177).With little facts,

of great numbers of ordinaray (common) work, ad to have some knowledge of

book-learning. Seamen, merchant, and agents of landlords, all had to have learnt

something(Mills177). They at least had to know their alphabets and possessd a

little bit of mathematics skills. Education, however, was general regarded with

justifiable suspicous by allanches of authority, it was impossible to surpress

education(Mills177).

King Richard III of England displayed considerable enlightment when, in

151 he merely rejected the petition of certain landowners who sought to prevent

their chidren from attending schools.(medevel10) But declared that any parent

in his kingdom was free to send their children- if a school could be found

(Medievel10). But Reformation made it difficult for educatin, and destroyed

much of the existing system of education.

In our century, schools can be found in every county, in were that children

can go to school without wanting to know if they can not go to school because

their are no schools around their town. Also, with the peition with the parents,

some, not letting them go to school. Parents of our century encourage children to

go to school, and get an education and go to college, not just to waste away their

life and not becoming anything. Dont get me wrong their are afew who still

become nothing but a bum on the streets, as in the renaissance a beggar on the

street. Wanting nothing in life but a free ride , and thats not what its about.

But there were little basic change in the practice during the sixteen century.

Schools in Protestant countries were , though the cirriculum still gave pride of

place to religions and classic studies.(Medievel11) An english traveller in

Germany in 1600 believed that all Gremans , even the lowest classes, had to have

at least a passing acquaintance with Latin, arthmetic, and music (Medieve11).

In England, over 00 new schools came into existance during the latter half of th

sixteenth century, supplying the place of those monastic schools whicch had been

swept away (Medievel11). In response to the Protestant challenge, the great

order of the Jesuits was formed 1640, one of them declared aims being the

education of children and other persons ignornt in Christianity.(Medievel1).

In their abandonment of them forcing information into the heads of the reluctant,

the Jesuitd made it considerable step forward in pedadological theory.

(Medievel1) They sought rather to spur their pupils forward by mutual rivalry,

driving classes under such names a Rome and Carthage and putting the two

sections against each other(Medievel1). The Jesuit aim was a child skilled in

receiving ideas rather than in speculating about them, able to dazzle in debate over

orginal work (Medievel1). It was long befoe the most liberal theories of

education found their way into pratice (Medievel1). There was growing

awareness that eucaion should have aoaden base, infused with the humanities

and producing a length of wise and educated people (Dickens17).

In the book Amazing Grace, author Jonathan Kozol writes of the lifestyle of children who live in the Southonx, the poorest congressional district in the United States. Their lives may seem extraordinary to readers, but to them, they are just as normal as everyone else is. The lifestyle these children see as normal is filled with pollution, AIDS, drugs, and violence. Unfortunately this way of living is the only life many of them have ever known. With these surroundings they live in, the need for quality healthcare is a vital importance. The government does nothing to intervene to help those in the community; instead they continue to cut programs.

One of the cutbacks Kozol mentions is the reductions in the number of orderlies, janitors, security guards, and lab technicians at medical facilities who primarily serve the poor. According to one of the heads at a city hospital, this will cause delays in care, unsanitary hospitals, and longer time in the designated waiting rooms. These kinds of problems are already apparent in hospitals in the area. With the cutback, hospitals will have a difficult time to ever become a decent place to receive care (Kozol 100). Earlier in the book, Kozol introduces readers to a woman, Alice Washington, whom suffers from AIDS and has been one of many to receive this sort of treatment in the hospital. Her encounters at the local hospitals are horrifying to readers. In one instance, Washington was told by her doctor to be admitted to the hospital after test results of hers came back. She did not want to go, but he persisted and told her a bed would be ready for her in two hours. According to Washington I went to the hospital and, when I get there its six hours before they can put me in a bed. Then, when I go upstairs, the room is not prepared. The bed is covered in blood and bandages from someone else. Flowers are scattered on the floor. Toilets stopped with toilet paper. Bed hasnt been made. Id been through this once before. Either you wait for hours until someone cleans the room or else you clean the room yourself (Kozol 14). Later in book, Alice Washington waits for four nights in the downstairs corridor in the hospital before a bed is free. Her son, David took her to the hospital and for five hours she sat up and David asked a nurse if they was any place where is mother could lie down. The nurse got mad and snapped at me. She said I cant grant your request. My mother had to sit there until three a.m. At three they put her on a stretcher and a doctor looked at her. He said she needed X-rays but he said that there was no one free to do them. She didnt get the X-rays for two days (Kozol 8). Alice spent three nights on a stretcher in the hallway. When she finally got a room, she got extremely cold and began to shiver. But, the hospital had no blankets. Another woman, Shirley Flowers, says she have top hope you dont have to use the bathroom at Lincoln Hospital. She describes than has being very disgusting, with waste spread all over the floor (Kozol 165). These examples of treatment in the Southonx are shocking. The conditions are horrible for anyone, especially for those who are sick. And to think that more cuts would likely happen and the hospitals would get worse than they already are is even more horrifying.

Next is the problem of children being referred to clinics and hospitals if their state of mind is harmful to themselves or others. Because a lot of children experience and/or observe traumatic situations, there mental state may be in jeopardy. The clinics and hospitals they are referred to and need treatment from overbooked. Children find themselves waiting for months. Jonathan Kozol spoke to a teacher who shared a story about a boy she was concerned about. A 1-year-old boy, she says, came in one day during the winter in a despondent state of mind. Ive never come across a child more depressed. He sat here and he said, I want to die. We reached his mother. She took him to Lincoln Hospital. They did aief assessment, then turned him right around (Kozol 15). The boy went back a week later for a blood test and was released again. The mother was told she would hear back and of course she did not. Eight weeks later he still had received no medication or treatment. Even when a child has suicidal tendencies, nothing is done. How sick does someone have to be in order to receive a proper treatment?Professional writers help on amazing grace essays

Even having AIDS does not consider you to be sick enough to receive assistance. There is a federal program referred to as SSI, which is a federal program for sick and disabled people. Alice Washington has tried to multiply times to be on SSI, but continues to be rejected even though her health condition is on bad shape. The medication for AIDS is very expensive and without taking it the patients condition will be in jeopardy. Washington tells of how her friend died from AIDS and shortly after her death, checks from the SSI began to come. Now her friends boyfriend cashes them each month and keeps the money. Her son, David, believed she was not eating in order to get qualified. I wondered if shes starving herself so that shell qualify, so that theyll say, This womans sick enough. She qualifies (Kozol ). Later in book, Kozol asks David if she finally got approved. She was not, with reason being, she isnt sick enough (Kozol 0).

Another condition found in the Southonxs healthcare system problem of prenatal care. At Lincoln Hospital, there is a four-month waiting list for this kind of care. Because of this, women may decide to get themselves put in prison in order to receive prenatal care. There is better care in the prisons than in the hospitals. According to Kozol, if they [women] are pregnant, they receive prenatal and prenatal care, parenting classes, and addiction therapy, in addition to the services of nurseries (146). A woman from the Southonx, says a nun who works with female inmates begged us not to take her out of prison…until her baby was delivered (Kozol 146). It is awful to think a woman would have to resort to prison to get decent care for themselves and their baby.

Another problem is the distribution of social workers. Kozol mentions that the city of intends to lay off fifteen thousand workers with approximately five thousand of them involved in agencies that provide social services. A majority of those being laid off are black and Hispanic women. By firing such a large amount people, more strain will be put on the social workers that survive the cut and already have many patients. Caseloads of social workers, already as large as 00 children to one worker in some instances, are certain to grow larger (Kozol 101). With some many people to help out, the patients cannot possibly get all the assistance they need. Also, with such responsibility, the social workers may find his or her job to be too stressful and may decide to just quit. Then, once again would the social service program lose more workers.

Since the healthcare in Southonx is so appalling, one might suggest going into Manhattan or another borough of New York City in order to receive quality healthcare. However, this is not as easy as it sounds. The last thing those hospitals want is patients from the Southonx. Therefore residents from Southonx feel not wanted. According to nurse who works in the Southonx, If a womans black, Hispanic, and on welfare, maybe a drug user, or has HIV, she knows she isnt welcome in a first-class hospital (Kozol 175). Some of private hospitals, such as Mount Sinai Medical Center, are segregated. At Mount Sinai, the fourth floor is designated for blacks and Hispanics. Here, the rooms are overcrowded with peeling paint and showers in the hallways. On the floor above, the rooms are private with bathrooms. On the fifth floor, new mothers receive classes on infant care,east-feeding, nutrition, and exercise. These classes are not provided to those on the fourth floor. Nurses on the fifth floor are instructed not to record alcohol abuse on a patients record. However, on the fourth floor, it is the exact opposite nurses record a mothers drug and alcohol uses and also contacts welfare officials. According to Kozol, when a pregnant black woman visit the hospital with her white husband, she was shown the rooms on the fifth floor. When she came to the hospital without her husband to have her baby, she was placed on the fourth floor. These two floors make it seem like patients are in entirely different hospitals.

Kozol also mentions the cutbacks in drug-rehabilitation services. These services already have a six-month waiting list and only offer help to one in ten of the half-million heroin and cocaine addicts in New York. There also cutbacks happening to the AIDS services provided to six hundred children and sixteen thousand adults. These two problems can be tied together. One of the reasons AIDS is an epidemic in theonx is because of the high amount of drug use. Needles are shared spreading the disease. The city had needle drives where users can get to clean needles, but thousands still get infected each year. If they cut drug-rehabilitation programs, users will keep using and the amount of AIDS patients will increase. The medicine to help with the HIV and AIDS diseases is costly. Kozol also mentions Mayor Guilianis plans to terminate an agency that provides services to sufferers of AIDS (116). According to David Washington, The mayor says that he needs to take these things away from us, but we dont need to have these things taken away from us. Once theyre gone, a lot of us are going to go with them (Kozol 11). If they completely cut services to help with the AIDS virus medications, only more people will suffer and die.

Finally, the Southonx is experiencing a shortage of doctors in schools. In the public school system in 170, there were four hundred physicians caring for children. By the spring of 1, they number has been drastically reduced to twenty-three. Most of those twenty-three are part-time physicians (Kozol 107). Most childrens parents cannot afford quality healthcare, so at least seeing a school physician is better than nothing.

The governments attitude towards these people is such that the residents feel devalued and not worthy of being seen or heard. Changing the social policy of the community is of important in making it a better place to live. Without having anyone on their side, the residents of the Southonx feel trapped. They cant even go into Manhattan to receive care. They are just turned away and told to go to hospital in their own area. Drug users will keep using; the number of AIDS residents will keep increasing. How are residents able to receive the care they need? Many will end up dying while suffering. Those who are born into the Southonx do not have a good chance to better their lives. It is hard cycle to get out of when you are not accepted anywhere else. It is like the government and other officials do not even see this has a real place.
