Through out history, the search for immortality seemed to be an
obsession for many men and women. They wanted to go beyond the
limitations of their mortal existence ad have everlasting life. Which the main
Online writing services offer help on Gilgamesh character, Gilgamesh, from the "Epic of Gilgamesh" was looking to find.
But in trying to find his immortality, he uses arrogance and irresponsible
judgments, but by the end he becomes smarter and learns the true meaning of life.
In the epic, Gilgamesh uses arrogance and irresponsible (bad)
judgments when he keeps onagging to others that he is better than
everyone else. Since he is two- thirds god and one- third man, he is more
superior and has the right to treat people anyway he wants to. His disrespect
and harsh treatments are similar to sicknesses because even though the
people of Urak are fed up with Gilgamesh, they go through the pain. From
all his cruel acts the people end up resenting him. So they call the gods for
help, in response they create Enkidu who is supposed to help them. Once
Enkidu witnessed the kind of abuse, Gilgamesh was imposing on his people,
he had to step in. He issued a challenge to Gilgamesh, they fought furiously,
and Enkidu lost. So instead of actually helping the people of Urak, he sort of
betrays them because he and Gilgamesh become best friends. They were
very devoted to each other. Gilgamesh was very ambitious, especially for
glory. So he undertook a battle with the Cedar Forest guardian, Humbaba, in
order to rid the land of evil and create a name for himself.
He killed Humbaba and from this action he was known world wide.
Ishtar, the goddess of love, became infatuated with Gilgamesh. She wanted
him to be her love slave, but instead he declined. He didnt want to be in any
kind of relationship with her. In revenge, she told the gods to send the Bull
of Heaven down to destroy Urak and Gilgamesh, but the Bull of Heaven is
killed by Gilgamesh and Enkidu. When they killed the bull, they totally
disrespected the gods, so as a punishment they put a curse on Enkidu. It
eventually took his life.
The most important part of the epic, was when Enkidu died.
Gilgamesh went into a deep depression because he didnt want to believe that
his friend, who was almost like aother to him, was dead. He couldnt
cope, it had put him over the edge. Enkidu was the most important person in
his life. But because Gilgamesh cared for Enkidu so deeply, he found a way
to get over his death by searching for immortal life.
Gilgamesh really searches for immortality because he is scared of
dying. He didnt want to go through the things Enkidu went through. Now
that he was looking for everlasting life, he valued others around him and
didnt take them for granted. He became unselfish and fond of all people
even those not like him, his people in a sense. This was a sight you would
not have seen, if he didnt meet Enkidu. Enkidu had a great influence over
Gilgameshs life. This influence changed his whole view of life.
The worth of a mans life is many times said to be measured by the
things he has done and the legacy he has left behind. After realizing, he
wasnt a god-man, he saw that the real glory came from passing your name
on. But in order to receive glory you had to do many good deeds and affect
people in a tremendous way. While on his journey, he gained a lot wisdom.
He learned that people dont live forever and everyone mortal has to come to
the point, where they go on to live in a better place, or not. He also learns
that you cant always get the things you want. And when you do want
something, it doesnt come easily; you have to go up against obstacles and
fight for what it is you want. Gilgamesh does fight for what he wants, by
going down into the cold water and retrieving a plant that would give him
immortal life. But when he found the plant, he thought that all the hard times
had ceased and hed accomplish his goal. But once again he faced trials and
tribulations. A serpent, such as the one from the bible, had taken the plant
from him and eaten it. He had failed, and he knew from that point on what
would happen to him when he returned home, "Death". But when he died I
think that he was ready to die. Because if I had the chance to become
immortal and you already had the plant that could ensure it, I would have
eaten the plant as soon as I retrieved it from the water. He didnt, I believe it
was because he wanted to share his immortality with Enkidu, but since he
was dead he couldnt and he would be alone forever. And I believe that he
thought being alone was even worst than death. No one wants to be utterly alone.
