Page one

For my personal reflective essay I have chosen to write about the dangers of analysing yourself and also the dangers of failing to do so.

Analysing ones actions or behaviour is, for most people, a common or normal thing to do. If you do or say something to someone, afterwards, you think about what you have said or what you did. Also, to analyse the way you think is a regularly performed action for some people. I know that I do it a lot. I make an opinion on something and then I think the opinion through, often thinking afterwards, "Is that opinion fair?"

College Essays on Personal/Self Analysis Depending on the level of philosophical-mood I am in, the analysing of such a thing is low in priority, and as such, gets little, almost no thought whatsoever. If I am In a very reflective mood then I will often question my opinions, behaviour or judgements for a great period of time because I want to feel comfortable knowing that what I think or what I have done or what I am thinking about doing is the right thing to do, have done, or to think. If I find that I have done something morally wrong, against my own morals, then I will do all in my power to change this.

To make a judgement of yourself, you must take into account a lot of things to do with the way you act and behave towards particular situations and particular people who obviously have different characters and different attitudes.

When making an overall judgement of myself, which I do regularly to make sure Im not doing anything seriously wrong without noticing, I look at how I act towards others and how I act when particular situations arise.

Having fun could be made more difficult if one analyses themselves too closely and makes themselves feel paranoid or totally and uncontrollably self-conscious. This could be because you may think no one else likes the things you do. Whatever you do is completely of your own free will, and will usually be your true feelings towards something, and unless it is a completely irrational opinion then people will probably respect your honesty and respect your true feelings.

The analysis of your own behaviour can be a good and a bad thing. Good because you see how you are acting towards or people, circumstances etc… and you see whether you would like to be on the other end of your actions and you get to make an overall judgement of yourself. Bad because, if analysed too closely then one can be made to feel paranoid and scared to be themselves.

Page

As well as there being dangers of analysing yourself, there are also dangers of failing to do so, these being; you may make incorrect decisions about certain things without realising it, these incorrect decisions could mean the end of a friendship or intimate relationship if not sorted out or repaired in time. By not analysing yourself you may make major mistakes when writing essays for English for example - luckily I always analyse my ideas when doing these essays!!

Friendships are very important in my life. In order for me to make sure that they are consistent and friendly, which is almost never constant, I analyse and examine my behaviour towards the friend or acquaintance and make sure Im not being unfair, stubborn, or any other negative verbs like that. If behaviour within friendships wasnt examined at all then I think that a lot more people would argue and dispute over misplaced feelings.

So, there are dangers of self-analysis, and of your actions and behaviour, dangers which can lead to paranoia and self-consciousness. There are also dangers of failing to analyse yourself and examine the way you think or act. These dangers can make one complacent and take things for granted.

Order your HOW DOES HARPER LEE USE MINOR CHARACTERS IN "TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD"? paper at affordable prices with ! It could be argued that Harper Lee has a different style of writing to other authors as she uses, minor characters to develop the identities of the major characters. She also uses this style of writing to give the scene and surroundings ore depth and emphasis, for example when Scout starts an argument with Walter Cunningham which develops into a fight due to the fact that Walter got Scout off to a bad start with the new teacher, Miss Caroline; helps us develop the identity of Scout, a tomboy, (the major character) and uses Walter (the minor character) to show us this. It also helps us develop minds

image of a small piece of Maycombe that people will stick up for each other but will show their wild side if things dont go right or they are offended.

Harper Lee uses a much wider variety of minor characters than major characters. An example of a major character is Boo Radley. " Boo was sitting in the living room cutting some items from the Maycombe Tribute to paste in his scrapbook. His father entered the room. As Mr Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parents leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities". From this extract it may seem that Boo Radley has little to do with the plot of the story and therefore a minor character, however Boo is a major character and as the plot develops Boo plays a very major character. Boo Radleys identity is developed by the over reacted stereotypical views from the majority of the minor characters who all have the view that Boo is one of the evilest men to ever walk the planet. But this stereotypical view isought to question when the children, Dills, Scouts and Jems fascination for fantasy takes them to the extreme to try and get Boo Radley to come out and play with them. While attempting this and they think they have been caught in the act they flee and while fleeing Jem manages to get his trousers caught and tangled in the fence, with no time to spare Jem quickly discards of his trousers. Later on in the evening Jem discreetly creeps out of the house and goes to retrieve his trousers, he returns and tells Scout to go to sleep. A few nights later he tells Scout that when he found his trousers they had been stitched back together, like something he would of done, also they were folded, as if someone was expecting him. Looking at the evidence it was most likely to be Boo. This view that it was Boo can be enforced by, that on the night of the fire when the children are engrossed by the fire, Boo with the children oblivious to him he puts a blanket over them to keep them warm. Harper helps us get a more detailed view of Boo by using minor characters and incidents to give us a more detailed view on Boo, that he is actually and loving, caring and child friendly person and his stabbing incident could have been an seizure or epileptic fit. An example of a minor character is the new teacher from the city who is going to teach in Maycombe, Miss Caroline. "As I read the alphabet a faint line appeared between her eyeows, after making me read most of my first reader and the stock market quotations from the mobile register aloud, she discovered I was literate and looked at me with more than just faint distaste". "Miss Caroline went to her desk and opened her purse "Heres a quarter" she said to Walter "go and eat ddowntown today. You can pay me back tomorrow". Walter shook his head "None thank you Maam" he drooled softly". From these extracts the idea that Maycombe is a town that has a community in which everyone knows everyone and their ways are developed. Miss Caroline helps develop this scene by her lack of knowledge of the ways and folk of Maycombe. She also helps emphasize the point that the Cunninghams are poor and Walter couldnt pay her back, they are also embarrassed by their amounts of money but dont complain an get along. Another ideaought from this jam-packed scene is that Miss Caroline underestimates the people of Maycombe, also Miss Caroline helps us get a clearer view on Scout and even though Scout is a tomboy she is still very intelligent for her age and quite easily top of her class and too advanced for it too. This scene and Miss Carolines role as a minor character really emphasizes the fact Harper Lees style of writing is using minor characters to develop the identities of the major characters.

Harper Lees impressive and developing style of writing is effective because is really helps us get an understanding of the major characters (without leaving out the minor characters) and the environment they live in. as explained throughout this essay Harper Lee uses minor characters like Francis to develop the personalities of the major characters like Atticus. While reading "To Kill A Mocking Bird" it may not seem totally obvious that Harper Lee writes like this, however at closer inspection this style of writing is actually happening before your very eyes, this idea may seem useless, but if Harper Lees fluent style of writing is not obvious but discreet while reading the book, it is clear that Harper Lee can use an impressive style of writing, and develop the major characters using the minor characters through speech or scenes without letting it interact and destroy the fluency of her writing. Although in some cases this style of writing cannot be all it is cracked up to be. Even though Harper Lees style of writing is using the minor characters to develop and emphasize the personalities of the major characters, it could be useful if there was a slight more emphasize on the minor characters life and personalities rather than just really use them for developing the major characters. On closer inspection there are some characters that are really neither major nor minor in the story, for example, Aunt Alexandra and Judge Taylor. These two characters are neutral characters as they are developed by some minor characters or play too much of a major role to be minor but also they develop some major characters, e.g. Judge Taylor develops Atticus character in Tom Robinsons trial, but is also plays too much of a major role to be a minor character.

In conclusion it is very clear that Harper Lee uses minor characters very effectively by using them to develop the identities of the major characters. Overall her style of writing has more positives than negatives and she can use it discreetly and not make it spoil or interact with the story, which is handy. The majority of the characters are minor so we can get more depth and develop the identities of more of the major characters. From all of the evidence it is incredibly clear that Harper Lees writing style is very fluent, helps us get a deeper understanding of the major characters, gives the story more depth and emphasize and always keeps us guessing which route the story could take, Harper Lee has really used this style of writing to the full in this wonderful novel.

Out staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Supreme Court Legal Process, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Supreme Court Legal Process paper at affordable prices! The California Supreme Court consists of the Chief Justice and six associate justices. The Chief Justice may assign justices of lower courts as pro tempore justices to assist the court when a regular justice is absent or disqualified in a particular case. The Chief Justice also designates an associate justice to serve as Acting Chief Justice in instances of absence, disqualification, or recusal.

The work of the Supreme Court consists primarily of determining what cases the court will review and deciding those cases by written opinions after holding oral argument. Appeals in all death penalty cases are automatically taken to the Supreme Court. Other cases normally come before the court either in the form of petitions for review of decisions by the Courts of Appeal or as petitions for extraordinary writs of mandate, prohibition, certiorari, or habeas corpus. In these cases, the court must decide whether to accept the matter for decision.

DISCRETIONARY DECISION WHETHER TO ACCEPT A CASE

Like the United States Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court has discretionary jurisdiction over many of the matters presented to it. Thus, with the exception of a relatively small number of appeals that come to the court directly, it has discretion to decide whether or not it will accept any particular case for review and decision on the merits. When a petition for such discretionary review is filed with the court, it is scheduled for one of the courts weekly Wednesday conferences, at which time the court will decide whether to accept the case. At the time the conference date is selected, the matter is assigned by the Calendar Coordinator on a rotational basis to one of the central staffs. Overflow petitions are assigned to one of the justices for preparation of a conference memorandum. The conference memorandum summarizes the relevant procedural or evidentiary facts of the case, any pertinent rulings in the matter by inferior courts or administrative agencies, and the issues raised by the parties. The conference memorandum also contains a discussion of the merits of the issues and a recommendation as to whether the court should accept the case. The justices use the memoranda to assist them in assessing the merits of the cases and the importance of the issues involved. If a justice desires, he or she may request that a matter be continued to a later conference in order to circulate a supplemental conference memorandum advancing an analysis or recommendation different from that of the original conference memorandum. For a petition for review to be granted or an order to show cause to be issued in an original proceeding, at least four justices must concur. Many of the cases accepted by the court at its weekly conferences will be argued orally before the full court and will be decided by a full written opinion. There are, however, exceptions. For example, many cases that appear on conference raise an issue that is already before the court in another case. In that event, the court may decide to grant and hold the new case until its opinion in the lead case is filed. When the lead opinion becomes final, cases that have been held for that opinion usually are transferred to the Court of Appeal for reconsideration in light of the lead opinion, or review may be dismissed as improvidently granted if it appears that the decision of the lower court was consistent with the opinion. In other instances, the court may transfer a case to a Court of

Appeal for further consideration in light of a case decided after the Court of Appeals decision, or the court may deem it appropriate to make an order to show cause returnable before a lower court.

AFTER A CASE HAS BEEN ACCEPTED

After a case has been accepted for review the Chief Justice assigns it to one of the seven justices who voted to grant review for preparation of a calendar memorandum. The justice to whom a case has been assigned prepares and circulates a calendar memorandum setting out the facts and legal issues, and proposing resolution of those issues. Soon thereafter, each justice states his or her preliminary response to the calendar memorandum, and indicates whether he or she will request changes, or will concur or dissent. Changes may be made by the author of the original calendar memorandum and, if appropriate, tentative concurring and dissenting memoranda may be circulated. When at least a majority of the justices have tentatively concurred in a proposed disposition, the Chief Justice places the case on a pre-argument conference. If a majority of the justices indicate they will tentatively dissent from the original calendar memorandum, and unless the original author agrees to change his or her view to accommodate the majority, the Chief Justice reassigns the matter to one of the dissenting justices, or resets the matter for further discussion. Thereafter, when a majority of the justices indicate they tentatively concur in the calendar memorandum, the Chief Justice sets the matter for oral argument.

AFTER ORAL ARGUMENT THE ASSIGNMENT, PREPARATION, AND CIRCULATION OF PROPOSED OPINIONS

A conference is held on each case as soon as possible after oral argument. After this conference the justices take a tentative vote on the case. If the recommendations of the justice who prepared the calendar memorandum are tentatively favored by a majority of the court, then that justice usually will retain the case for the drafting of a proposed majority opinion. As soon as possible after the matter is submitted to the court, the assigned justice circulates a proposed majority opinion. Justices who deem it appropriate to write and circulate dissenting or concurring opinions are afforded time in which to do so, and the author of the proposed majority opinion in turn is given an opportunity to respond to any such opinion.

THE FINAL STEP FILING THE COURTS DECISION

When the deliberation and drafting process has been completed and all justices have subscribed to the majority or concurring or dissenting opinions, a Notice of Forthcoming Filing is posted in the Clerks Office. A decision does not become final until 0 days after it has been filed. The parties may petition for a rehearing during the first 15 days after the filing date. The court may extend the 0-day period by as much as 60 additional days in order to consider whether to grant a petition for rehearing or in order to modify its decision on its own motion.

I.

• The purpose of our exploratory research was to estimate the potential sales of the strip joining press in the linoleum market by using descriptive research.

• The linoleum market could potentially be a market for Behlen to conduct further research in to.

Purchase your paper on textiles • Approximately 1.81 billion dollars of this product are sold in the U.S. each year, by approximately 6 manufacturers (Census web page). From internet research we have found that for one major company, in the linoleum market, in the last three years they have seen sales rise from million to 40 million (Linoleum Lives On). As far as our exploratory research has turned up there are no competitors for the strip joining press. The information we have found leads us to believe they rethread the line for each roll of linoleum, thus there would be no competition for Behlen (Forboochures). Otherwise Behlens competition in the linoleum market would be whatever the companies are using now to keep their lines moving. We feel there needs to be further exploratory research into the linoleum market.

II.

• We are trying to find new markets for Behlens strip joining press. Our product consists of the strip joining press. Our potential customers would be the 6 U.S. manufacturers of linoleum (Census web page).

III.

A. Total market sales for the year are 1.811 billion dollars between 6 manufacturers (Census web page).

B. Again we do not think that there are any competitors. Right now it seems that the manufacturers stop the production line and rethread.

C. Our only problem we see is we have not had enough time and found enough information to prove that there is a potential market for Behlens strip joining press in the linoleum market. Further exploratory research is necessary.

IV.

• Due to the lack of information and time we were not able to make a definite decision as to whether the linoleum market would be a potential market for Behlen to pursue.

Summary Response to "The Road To Unreality" by Mark Slouka

Order your Summary Response to "The Road To Unreality" by Mark Slouka paper at affordable prices! Reality of Unreality

In Mark Sloukas essay, "The Road To Unreality" society is a "growing separation from reality." Slouka claims that we are "increasingly removed from experience, over-dependent on the representations of reality that come to us through television and the print media," because of that, we seem "more willing to put our trust in intermediaries who "re-present" the world to us."

An example used to make his point was while questioning a neighbor as to whether she believed the accused murders story, their response "I dont know, Im dying for the movie to come out, so I can see how it ends." Was like many responses you would get from anyone in todays society. Todays society use television and/or newspapers to get the answers that will satisfy them. Without television the knowledge of the world events would be limited.

Slouka, in his essay, claims daily life before 100 was "not that different from what it had been for centuries," for the majority of individuals. "The twentieth century, altered the pace and pattern of daily life forever." He claims that "within two generations the Old World was gone." I disagree; the technologies that exist today, such as the telephone, computers, televisions, and the automobile, humans created. These devices just didnt evolve; humans created what Slouka feels are taking over the real world. The technologies we have created, is a convenient way of utilizing everyday living. Professional writers help on Summary Response to "The Road To Unreality" by Mark Slouka essays Telephones and computers are a convenience, because they exist does not mean we are obligated to use them. It is a choice. Many people today use them because it fits into their style of living. These new technologies created are still used as a way of interacting, even though it is not a face-to-face experience. Telephones and computers are very real, just an alternative way of interacting. Take the computer for instance, along with the evolution of this device, in time a device called a web-cam was created. A web-cam can be used to view the person at the other end of the computer, through a series of lenses and wires; you still get a face-to-face interaction.

Technology has made doing things so convenient that many choose to do them in the comfort of their own home, as opposed to experiencing it first hand. I can see where Slouka feels it makes us lazy, but on the other hand, it is not always the case. An example I choose to use is the Internet College Courses. For me Internet courses are a convenient way of learning and being able to take care of my family at the same time. With having four children, the aspect of attending school on a daily basis, and attending to their needs was just not likely. Internet courses give me an opportunity to do both, allowing me to complete my work at my convenience and spend time with my family. The computer tends to make my life a little easier. Another example I chose to use is the telephone; it allows many of us to keep in touch with friends and family when it is not always convenient to talk in person. The telephone and computer allows me to keep in touch with my family who lives three states away. I would like nothing more than to be able to see them daily face-to-face, it is just not possible.

In closing, the reality of unreality is what we choose it to be. It is not an obligation it is a choice. We can chose to stand by the traditional way of living (no telephones, televisions, automobiles, and computers) or we can utilize this technology to create an easier way of living.

"It was very sad, he thought. The things men carried inside. The things men did or felt they had to do. He almost nodded at her (his love), but didnt. Instead, he went back to his maps. He was now determined to perform his duties firmly and without negligence…from that point on, he would comport himself as a soldier. On the march, he would impose strict field discipline. He would accept the blame from what had happened to Ted Lavender. He would be a man about it."

- Tim Oien, "The Things They Carried"

The first time I read The Things They Carried by Timothy Oien, I immediately identified with the work. It seemed that Oien had a very individualistic way of looking at horrid events and experiences in a light that I emulated. The Things They Carried is Oiens recap of his occurrence and involvement in the Vietnam War, a war that, for some reason, interests and affects me. This quotation is one of a many that I distinctly remember. It is the paragraph in the first chapter of the book where Oien describes the attitude Lieutenant Jimmy Cross decides to adopt after the killing of one of his men, Ted Lavender. Before the killing Ted Lavender, Cross emits an attitude of selfishness, and ironically, at the same time one of deep love for a woman at home. His complete and udder focus on this woman caused him to lose sight of why he was in Vietnam in the first place, which was to direct and lead his division, and serve his country. Professional writers help on "Problem of Society" essays This selection helps me frame and formulate what I see as the "problem" of ethics because it shows Cross substitution of altruism with self-interest, disorder, and resentment. Cross job as Lieutenant was to unify his troops, create a harmony amongst them, and perpetuate an everlasting hope of survival, all while selflessly leading them and his country to victory. His constant thoughts of his love back home hindered the completion of his job. They took over his mind, altering his actions, precautions, and orders. The problem of ethics in this is that people can easily become preoccupied with people, places, things, or events they believe to be more important than the actual entity of higher value. In comparison with the problem of ethics, Cross problem was that while he may have had best intentions in mind for his troops (his morality in theory), the actions he carried out (morality in practice) contradicted this. That is the problem with ethics; selfless thoughts and selfish actions do not always coincide and, therefore, cause dilemmas within oneself and externally.

This quotation can summarize the solution used promote the good of the troops and people in general. In a smaller picture, Cross chooses to perform his duties more seriously, dispose of the thoughts that distracted him, and adjust his troops for a better performance. In the larger picture, this translates into taking life seriously, both thoughts and actions to make sure both coincide with one another. In other words, become selfless in action and thought; want peace and harmony for everyone regardless of the cost. This, however, is not really a solution to the problem. It offers a suggestion to the attitude people should hold to achieve good ethics and morals. Unfortunately, that is a lot easier said than done, and only that person can change their views and actions to be the most moral and ethical person they can be.

Oiens quotation can be compared to a Machiavellian quotation used in The Prince "…And a prince ought, above all things, always to endeavor in every action to gain for himself the reputation of being a great and remarkable man (Chapter 1)." This quotation can be compared and contrasted to Tim Oiens quotation. In both quotations, it is suggested that every action one carries out should be great and remarkable. However, the motives behind completing each task differ. Tim Oien feels that one should act a certain way because it is the right thing to do. In this certain instance, he feels that Cross should act differently and "be a man about" taking his responsibility seriously. Oien tells of Cross realization that life in general, not just his life and the life of his loved one, is more important than everything else. When one has responsibility over another mans life, whether it is in some small, indirect way, or in the large, direct way that Cross is responsible for Lavenders life, the reality of that liability becomes greater and the stakes become higher. Machiavellis motive behind his quotation is less selfless and more direct. He states that every endeavor you attempt should be giving you a better name. In a way, this is comparable to Oiens theory on making life better for you and for others. However, what Machiavelli literally means is that if it is not going to benefit you, it should not be done.

Machiavelli and Oien are very hard to compare even though both have an idea about morals and ethics. Machiavelli seems to be more direct and focuses more on self-interest through actions and words. In other words, do what is in your best interest. Oien makes his statement directed more towards the good of people through realization and conquering of internal struggles. Because once the internal qualms are identified and dealt with, people can work towards solving the problem concerning morals and ethics.

Overall, morals and ethics differ for everyone. They are not one specific set of rules, regulations, laws, or suggestions. They are dependent on various factors and experiences throughout your life and since everyones life is different, everyones ethics, morals, and actions are not going to be identical. The main problem with the controversy of true morals and ethics is self-interest. The minute another entity takes over your mind is the minute all focus is lost. Once the focus of what is really good and true disappears, disunity and corruption become the result. Oien deals with the problem by showing Cross internal struggle on obsessing over his love, to realizing that he is the cause of disarray in his regiment. This realization causes his actions to change to better the good of himself, his troops, and the Vietnam War. Machiavelli, on the other hand, uses his quotation to state that as long as you are completing a task that is in the best interest of yourself, it is great and remarkable. Machiavelli shows how moral and ethics do not apply as long as a goal is accomplished successfully to benefit the reputation of the people and its country, and your reputation. The self-interested way of dealing with ethics and morals leads to problematic and corrupt society where it acceptable to do things for yourself without thinking of the consequences. Oien preaches the exact opposite. And while both Machiavelli and Oien offer ideas and suggestions for solutions, the main problem remains unsolved because we are human. The minute we as humans can become completely self-less is the minute the good of all people (ethics and morals) will be true.
