Virginia Woolfs A Room of Ones Own and Charlotte Perkins Gilmans The

Yellow Wall-Paper focus on the status of women in the history. Both of their works

show the repression of women who are unable to express their ideas in a male dominated society. Woolf in A Room of Ones own believes women need money

and a room of their own to write. Woolf says that women need to be independent from

men, and in order to do so women need to have money of their own. Gilman in The

Yellow Wall-Paper writes about the repression generated by the gender roles

established by the society which hinders men and women from developing and

practicing their ideas.

In A Room of Ones Own Woolf gives readers a clear picture of

what would have happened if a woman in Shakespeares day had had

Shakespeares genius. She describes the conditions women lived under during

the Elizabethan period. Woolf writes " For it is a perennial puzzle why no women

wrote a word of that extraordinary literature when every other man, it seemed, was

capable of song or sonnet." (Woolf 88). She finds evidence of the status of women as

property in Professor Trevelyans History of England; wife-beating was practiced without

shame and women were forced to marry the men of their parents choice. Woolf finds

that women are of great importance in poetic works, but in real life they were beaten

and locked up. A very queer, composite being thus emerges. (Woolf 0)

In order to illustrate womens oppression Woolf gives the readers an imaginative

story of what would have happened if Shakespeare had had a sister, Judith, as talented

as he was. Judith had the ability to produce works, just like herother but Judith never

had any education. The story of Judith goes like this Judiths father arranges a

marriage for her, Judith wanting to become an actress runs away from home and goes

to the city where shes mocked on, taken advantage of. Finally she kills herself at the crossroads.

The Yellow Wall-Paper by Gilman, is told in the style of a secret journal that

begins when a young woman suffering from postpartum depression is taken to the

country for treatment of a nervous illness by her husband who is a physician. The

narrator of this story is a young woman, who does not relish the joys of marriage and

motherhood but instead wants to write. Unfortunately, neither the society nor her

husband tries to understand her desire. She is forbidden from writing and kept passive

in the rest cure. Alone in her room, she projects onto the yellow wallpaper her own state

of imprisonment. Finally her health gets worsen and she is driven to the stage of mental

imbalance.

Throughout the story there are examples of dominant and submissive

relationship. Nobody gives importance to the emotions of the narrator " You see he

does not believe I am sick! And what can one do? […] Personally, I disagree with their

ideas. Personally I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do

me good " (Gilman 10).

Gilmans protagonist and Woolfs Judith Shakespeare are treated as objects by

their masters- the protagonists husband and Judiths father. Whenever Gilmans

protagonist wants to discuss about her desires with her husband John, he stops the

conversation and treats her like a child. " There is something strange about the house-I

can feel it. I even said to John […] but he said what I felt was draught, and shut the

window "(Gilman 11). He is not ready to listen to her since he has no respect for her

thoughts. He does not understand the narrators passion in writing and forbids her from

writing. " There comes John, and I must put this away, - he hates to have me write a

word"(Gilman 1). John also tells the narrator that hes in the country solely on her

account but he leaves her alone most of the time to do his own work. " He said we came

here solely on my account, that I was to have perfect rest and all the air I could get "

(Gilman 1). At one point in the story, the narrator who wants to visit her cousin, is

desperate to talk to John, but John pays no attention to her. " I tried to have a real

earnest reasonable talk with him the other day, and tell him how I wish he would let me

go and make a visit to Cousin Henry and Julia " (Gilman 1). The narrator is not even

given a chance to choose her own room. " I dont like our room a bit […] but John would

not hear of it " (Gilman 1).

The narrator observes the female figure, which looks as if a woman is behind the

bars, in the pattern of the wallpaper. The narrator begins to symbolize herself to be the

woman behind the bars whose attempts are unsuccessful in climbing out of the pattern.

Finally her husband and the society drive the narrator to insanity.

In Woolfs essay, Judith Shakespeare is not even consulted about her marriage.

" She cried out that marriage was hateful to her, and for that she was severely beaten

by her father " (Woolf ). Her life revolves around lives of men. Shes not

given a proper education by her father who fails to respect her strive for becoming a

writer. She runs away from home not happy with her fathers choice. Unfortunately she

finds herself in a male dominated society where shes suppressed from exhibiting her

talents. Judith is taken advantage of, finds herself with child. " At last Nick Greene the

actor-manager took pity on her; she found herself with child by that gentleman " (Woolf

). Finally unable to fight, Judith kills herself.

Gilman and Woolf describe the state of women seen as the weaker and poor sex

who have always been dependent on men, taking care of the family. When we

question ourselves why women are dependent on men and men not on women, the

answer is men see them superior to women. Both stories depict women who are

struggling for a place in a society governed by men. Gilman and Woolf show the

sufferings of women who are not given a choice, whose lives are lead according to the

men. Although their work is about the past, those living in the present are not immune

from gender oppression.

In Athens, Protagoras books were burned and he was exiled forever because of his beliefs. Protagoras was a philosopher that believed that there is no absolute truth. He was a sophist; a teacher or professor that taught for a fee and traveled around to manipulate the way people thought. Protagoras and sophists were thought highly of and were considered "wise men". He influenced people and changed their way of thinking.

Protagoras was basically saying that everything is true. Protagoras idea makes one reevaluate life itself, how are you to know that what is said is really true? As humans we may never really know. This shows that teaching is not always the truth. Like an individual that was taught that discrimination is right versus another individual that may have been taught that discrimination is wrong, this shows that a person can be taught something that is wrong but in their mind frame it could be right. Society is yet a changing idea. Generation after generation is taught differently. Who knows what will be taught in the generation yet to come.

Your perception of things is your knowledge. What you see can be totally different in the eyes of another person. Everything is not viewed as the same. One may believe in God the other may believe in Buddha but who am I to say that your beliefs are wrong and that mine are right? We as a society live in a diverse world there are many different beliefs, values and moral standards that are implanted in each and every mind. One may choose to change ones opinion on what they believe in only by choice. No one is force to do anything or believe anything you do it on your own will. One person may know things that you may not know and yet still they are not smarter than you.

How am I to know that my boyfriend loves me if there is not truth? How am I supposed to know if there really is a God? Sometimes you just have to believe and have faith, the questions have to cease. You just cannot go around questioning everything then there would be no solutions for anything. The world would be full of confused people. There would not be order or self-control amongst us. There would be chaos against each other. These are the reasons why Protagoras was exiled because he caused confusion among the people.

Everyone is usually used to something that is traditional and cut and dry. Some may not like the thought of someone coming in and changing what they are used to. That is why the world is so corrupted today because people are narrow-minded. They dont want to look at the big picture. They see only what is ahead of them and that is all. They look at things as though things will never change.

Order your Colateralized securities paper at affordable prices! COLLATERALIZED SECURITIES

Collateralized securities are all very much the same investment by concept the only difference is that the underlying collateral changes. Of course, as it does the name of the investment changes Collateralized ___ Obligation.

Underlying collateral Name Cheap writing services for Colateralized securities papers Mortgages CMO

Investment Grade Bonds CBO

High Yield Bonds (Debt) CDO

Other Assets (credit card, leases, etc) CIO

Bank Loans CLO

In concept they are very simple. An entity is formed (LLC), that entity takes in some equity and issues debt (C__Os). With the equity and proceeds it buys the underlying asset of mortgages or bonds or loans or whatever. Since the issued bonds are overcapitalized there is the equity and a small tranche of subordinated bonds issued, they are rated AAA by the rating agencies and pay AAA yields. Because the underlying asset investments are rated less (the investor often has a choice AA to BBB or less, there is a spread between issued and underlying and it that spread that is the investors income.

The spread is generally locked in for the life of the deal at the beginning. The underlying assets if not already floating rate paper are swapped to create floating rate LIBOR plus say .5 and the issued paper is issued at LIBOR plus say 1.5. The resulting 100 bps of spread flows to the equity holder / investor. Total equity of $10 million may support as much as $50 million in issued debt. In this example 1% spread on $50m is a 5% possible return on $10 million. The rating agencies know and the investor plans for an expected default rate. That rate (some percent of the total defaulting in the 10 to 1 year life of a deal and which drives the quality ratting) lowers the possible return to a particular targeted or expected return. Any default greater will decrease the expected return and any default less than will increase it.

These deals take out the risk of interest rate moves and take out the risk of the change in spreads and provide the opportunity to be paid for assuming just default risk. They also provide effective leverage without debt and without putting the investors entire balance sheet at risk.

Timing (strategic investment) is essential here since sufficient spread must exist to make them feasible in the first place and it must exist at the same time as the risk of default for the underlying is low (or at least acceptable). Once the investor is comfortable with the concept a decision can be made on the advisability of a particular underlying asset and a manager(s) for the deal. The actual timing of the deal will be dependant on the market. Today the CLO with bank loans underlying is the best.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, The Yellow Wallpaper”, is written from a feminist point of view. The story is centered around the protagonist, a woman who suffers from a mental depression following the birth of her baby. Her husband John, a physician, believes she needs to be kept in solitary confinement to ensure her the best recovery. However, being completely isolated and secluded in an upstairs room, ultimately leads to her downfall at the end of the story. What is isolation? Isolation is described as being alone, separated from social contact - perhaps in this case a misguided, inappropriate recovery (due to the time era). Isolation is effectively illustrated in this story through plot, setting, and characterization.

The plot begins in a time era, the 1800’s, when women were considered inferior to men, maybe a contributing factor opposing the woman in the story. We are introduced to a woman who suffers from a mental depression. Her husband John’s profession, being a physician, is to treat illnesses, and he does, in fact, diagnose her with an extreme mental depression. Yet, his treatment for her is perhaps the one reason she does not get well faster.” (Gilman, p.46) He does not believe she is sick, but he does believe isolation is the proper treatment. Men in this era were dominant, and women were considered misguided with unacceptable ideas. John sees his wife as a mindless being; however, the reader knows this is not true. John treats his wife as an ordinary, regular patient, rather than someone who is also his significant other. The protagonist suffers from depression, but she is still able to comprehend the things around her. She engages in many requests to enliven her surroundings, but time and time again she is declined by her husband. I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened onto the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it.” (Gilman, p.47) The treatment prescribed to his wife is from the beliefs of Weir Mitchell. The rest cure - used to calm one down. John’s wife is to remain in a completely relaxed state, refraining from any outside stimulus, perhaps ultimately resulting in an opposite effect. She is so alone, craving interaction with others, that she seeks out companionship from an illusion of a woman in the wallpaper in her room. She even becomes protective of this woman when she catches John and his sister looking at the wallpaper. Afraid that John and Jennie might take away her only friend, she convinces herself that no one will discover this woman, but I know she was studying that pattern, and I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!” (Gilman, p.54) She feels akin to this woman, who is also trapped, just like herself. Perhaps this illusion is her parallel.

To better understand the imprisonment the protagonist feels, Gilman makes effective descriptions about the setting. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house”, (Gilman, p.446) leaves feelings of loneliness and desolation. To ensure complete isolation of his wife, John keeps her prisoner in a place that is three miles away from town. She is also kept upstairs. All of her days are spent alone in a stark, barren room. Along with the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs”, (Gilman, p.48) John nails his wife’s bed to the floor. This does not seem like the appropriate atmosphere one should endure to overcome severe depression. Family members are even forbidden to visit. What else, other than family, would seem better suited to lift one’s spirits? And finally, she is forbidden to write, the one thing left to keep her well-grounded and at peace with herself. To overcome depression, one would think that the opposite of isolation would make promise of a start to recovery - friends, family, outside stimuli, and positive influences would make one want to get better. These descriptions about setting help emphasize the isolation that John’s wife experiences. The aspect of the story that is most intriguing is the conflict between the two main characters. Despite the fact that they are married, John is the result of the isolation that his wife undergoes. Due to the era of the story, John is a dominating male, one who is labeled with power and superiority. He is a physician with the knowledge and stature of high-class. He is a man that is above and beyond the general public, and most definitely his wife. His wife is only a poor, misguided woman, incapable of making decisions and expressing her own feelings. She is a mindless human being. But is she really? John’s wife bows down to his wishes and is perceived as not having acceptable ideas of her own recovery. But are her ideas really unacceptable? The supposed different level of character creates a sense of isolation and segregation. Had John been on the same level as his wife, he might have been more sympathetic to her and made the proper adjustments better suited to a quick and promising recovery. However, having created an isolated environment for her to live in, only increased the level of isolation for his wife and made their relationship even more distant.

Ultimately, it is the isolationought upon by John, thatings about his wife’s downfall. We, the readers, know that she was not a mindless human being. With proper care and attention, she may have recovered from her depression, which, however, eventually lead to insanity. Being shut out from society, locked up, and refused to express feelings and ideas would make almost anyone go crazy.

"Consumerism encourages conformity and undermines moral and ethical values in our society"

This is portrayed throught the media in modern society.uce dawe tapps into this worlds unethical materialistic views and ecpressed them throught the use of satire, black humour, pesonificaltion imagery and sarcasm.

In the Poem Enterwithout so much as knocking, Dawe satirically critsises the family the baby is born into, as they have conformed to the consumer drivin worlds ideals of a average family."as any well equipped smoothly run household, containe one ecconomy sized mum and one anthony squires coolstream summerweight dad"

This quote has a tone of patronism this tone is conveyed to the audience and makes us skeptical of the outcome of the family.

Dawe suggest through this poem how completely innocent thing such as a baby can become corrupted and conformed into unethical and un moral people.

Dawe portarys the stab in the back attitude of the grown up child and uses chliches to show the audience how shallow minded and heartles the world of material possestions had made him "kick whoevers down, number one every time for this chicken"

The same theme of the heartless unsympathetic unreverened attitudes of the world of advertising are shown also ineakthrough.

"a little girl is reported to have died happily in hospital singing a advertising commercial.

To the audience this introduction sets a so natural for a child to be affected by television.

Dawes tone in this paragraph is factual and definate, news, reporter like, it makes it unpersonal for the audience there is no sadness, etc.

The way consumerism is conveyed in this poem is the comercialisation of religion and heaven dawe conveys how nothing is sacred to advertising companies they will destroy anyone or anything to premote their product even exploit a little girls death in order to open up a new market in heaven.

Stand by all angelic host angels backed up by guitars

The way people have been sold out to consumerism has been depicted in the song sell out by george. album poly serena 001

In this song it explains how people conform to societys expectations and needs.

I knew you before you entered through the deadly door its eaten away at you its givin you the itch your dreaming of returning but you dont think you can"

Metaphorically the door represents the selling out of a pesons life force or soul to influences that dehumanise themselves, this is suported when they say they dont mind to blacken your stream they are pulling you along" They is used repitiotiously so to personify the force of advertising.

Blacken your stream" corrupt your mind the repitition in the song of "they dont" reinforces to the audience how the media hasought people to loose all ethical value in their life.

All these ideas of consumerism can be sumed up in the documentary Unreal images. The focus of the video is the images conveyed through the media and the messages they are sending to their target audience.

"shes beautifull hes gorgeous" Marlee at the beginging of the film has been consumed by the ifluence of the media and has been influenced by the messages they have sent her.

Pip hasnt so much been affected she realises that not everything she sees is real.

"do you find that when you feature something in a magazine people buy it?...... yes definaterly retailers love being in the mag because they get allot of calls,"

The advertising in the magazine influences teenage girls who want to be perfect, they see it they want it because they think they will be better off with it.

The magazine plays on girls securities on self image.

"our message is to be happy with who you are this is contradicted all the way through the magazine and documentary, computer enhansing is mention repetitavely, "we can fix the little things" "the natural look" pluck blush surl etc. " I have used a bottle of product to achive this natural look"

There is a demand for conformity and the undermining of the morals and ethics in all media products especially in the modern gerneration with the thought that,

"because I need it I deserve it because I deserve it I will do anything nessasary to obtain it"

Consumerism sets each person against themselves in the endless quest for the attainment of material goods and the imaginary world conjured up by things yet to be purchased.

All four texts are and expression of the need to find ourselves again after consumerism has taken away our individuality personality and identity, the text point out how our lives have been manipulated to conform to this consumeristic world that has been conjured up by world companies.

The level of commitment in a team will determine the success or failure of the team. Being committed means going, the extra mile for the team and giving maxim participation. I believe to show commitment to a team, the team must have a team charter, must communicate with each other, and have discipline.

To have an effective team, the team should build an effective charter. Craig Swenson (00) Chartering is the process by which the team is formed, its mission or task described, its goals set, its membership committed, and its plans made (p70). The charter is like a legal agreement between team members. With this agreement it will show each members commitment level. Questions should be listed to have an effective charter. Some question that should be listed are what is the purpose of the team, will the team be manager led or self-managed, what are the team goals, what are the boundaries, how will we secure equal commitment, how will we plan for conflict, and how will we evaluate success. My favorite, is the question about goals. Having an effective team, team members should not let individual goals interfere with team goal. Each member should share their individual goal, to build trust with each other, so the team can form one common goal. When creating your charter the team should list work expectations. Craig Swenson (00) These expectations should be the quality of work, quantiy of work, how is the timeliness of work defined, and what does it mean to come prepared to a meeting (p 7.)

When communicating, in a team, each member must listen and give feedback. When listening, each member must be able to comprehend and pay attention to detail. The lack of communication or not communicating effectively can harm a team. By being committed to a team communication play a big part. Write my paper on Commitment levels for me While in school, I remember doing a listening exercise. The teacher would tell one student a phrase, and that phrase had to got travel to the last student in the class. Then, the last student would tell the teacher, but the teacher always received the wrong phrase. That exercise showed, that when listening, a person must listen and pay attention, so that information can be given correctly. Getting the wrong information can affect the teams project.

Providing feedback gives information on how the team and individual is doing. This feedback will allow the team to clarify any misunderstandings, and let a team member know if he or she is not doing their share of work. When giving feedback, the best thing to do is be honest and respectful.

A major part of being committed to a team is having discipline. There are many different definitions for the meaning of discipline. My definition is doing the right thing in the absence of leadership. The Army has defined discipline as having values. (www.army.mil) These values are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These values are called the Army Values. Each value has a meaning, but duty, respect, and selfless-service applies when working in a team. Duty is fulfilling your obligations on the team. This means doing your share on project. Respect is treating people as they should be treated. Selfless-Service is putting the team first. Without these three values, discipline would not exit, there would not be a charter, and communication will not flow.
