Order your The Ultimate Bad Beat paper at affordable prices! Poker has always been a big part of my life. When I was younger, my parents had a weekly game with friends of theirs. I loved to stay up past my bedtime and watch them play. I didnt know the slightest thing about the game, yet something about it fascinated me. I dont know whether I just liked to idea of a "grown-up" game, or if I just wanted to get my hands on the oodles of quarters and dimes that were thrown back and forth with such reckless abandon. Every now and then, one or two would fall off the table and Id swoop in and snatch them up, saving them in hopes that I would one day be allowed to play. It was a long time coming, but after what seemed like years of begging, I was finally going to learn the game that had intrigued me so.

The poker lessons began at the kitchen table. My father first showed me Seven-Card Stud, the game of choice in my parents weekly session. In Seven-Card Stud, if you stay until the end of the hand, you are dealt seven cards - hence, the name. From your seven cards, you utilize five cards to make the best possible poker hand. That was the first thing I learned, what hand beat what. I picked it up quickly, and before long I had it memorized one pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush. Dad would deal the cards out as if there were six players seated at the table, two cards down and one up for each player. In turn, I would pick up each hand and decide whether I should stay with that hand or get out. Thats all. Just stay or fold. After I had played the three cards for all six hands, folding the appropriate hands, he would ask me what exposed cards had been folded. Then he scooped up all the cards and dealt out six new starting hands. Remembering all the folded exposed cards in seven-card stud is a valuable and critical part of the game. He only dealt a fourth card to the remaining hands once he was satisfied that I was consistently making the right decisions and remembering the folded exposed cards. Then he dealt the fifth, sixth and finally the seventh card. This was a wonderful way to learn poker. It enabled me to make numerous decisions in a short period of time with immediate, rapid feedback.

I immediately took my newfound knowledge and shared it with my friends, and we played every chance that we got. Sometimes for fun, betting with monopoly money or the pieces from a checkers set. Other times wed play for baseball cards or spare change. Those were the times I enjoyed the most, not only because I was much better than everyone else was and invariably came out ahead, but because the game was much more exciting when something was on the line. I was addicted to poker. Its a game that anyone can play - fat people, old people, short people, women and children. You dont need to possess any special skills to play; and everyone can do it. Doing it well is a different story though. Not only do you have to know the ins and outs of the game itself to succeed, but also you have to be able to read people. That was something I was good at, although 1 year-olds arent exactly the most cunning poker players in the world. Eventually, my level of competition climbed and I was playing in the games at family gatherings and was even allowed to play in my parents social game whenever they needed a sixth.

As we became older, my friends and I discovered new games. Seven-Card Stud was fine and all, but it was a little bit elementary, and we grew tired of playing the same game all the time. Thats when we learned Texas Hold Em, the game that decided the world champion of poker at the World Series of Poker each year. In Texas Hold Em, or just Hold Em as it is more commonly called, two cards are dealt face-down to each player, then 5 "community" cards are dealt face-up in the middle of the table, the first coming together (called the flop), then the 4th (turn) and 5th (river). There are 4 rounds of betting, the first two for a set amount, and the next two for double that amount (i.e. - Youre playing fifty cents and a dollar. When you receive your first cards, and on the flop, the betting increment is fifty cents. On the turn and river cards it is increased to a dollar). All players may use the cards they hold plus the community cards to make the best five-card poker hand. It wasnt long until we were playing for increasingly higher stakes, from the nickel and dime ante games we had played when we were younger, we were now playing for fifty cents and a dollar - and eventually as much as five and ten dollars. We were big fish in a small pond, and as we all turned 18, we were about to find a much larger body of water to swim in.Professional writers help on The Ultimate Bad Beat essays

The only casino card games allowed by law in the state of Florida must be twenty-five and fifty cent ante, with a ten-dollar pot limit. The exception to this rule, however, are tournament games where you receive a set amount of chips for whatever the buy-in price is. There are all kinds of tournament games, ranging in amount from twenty-five dollar all to the way to one hundred-dollar buy-ins, and paying prizes to the top finishers out of an 8-player table. Needless to say, the twenty-five and fifty cent, ten-dollar pot limit game didnt really excite me. The most profit you could possibly hope to turn at that limit, taking into consideration the rake (the cut that the house takes out of every hand dealt), is maybe twenty dollars at most. The only reason to even bother playing a lower limit game like that is the house-funded jackpot for getting dealt a royal flush, but this jackpot was valid for tournament games too, so it wasnt really an issue in deciding what to play.

So I started on the tournament games. The fifty-five dollar buy-in Hold Em tourneys were my game of choice, the winner receiving one-hundred and fifty dollars, second place ninety dollars and third place sixty dollars. Forty hands are dealt and, after the last hand is completed, the chips are counted determining each players place. After a while, I was more or less even, maybe up a few dollars here or there. But what I was ahead a lot of was knowledge. I had becomes quite good at Hold Em and could take one look at the board and how my opponents were betting and, with almost certainty, tell what they were holding. I had a tendency to play at a blazing speed on "autopilot" though, letting my reads make my decisions for me, and that would end up costing me.

Halfway through a fifty-five dollar buy-in Hold Em tournament, I was the chip leader. It was my turn to post an ante, known as a "blind" because you are forced to bet that amount no matter what your cards are, which meant that I would be the first to act in the rounds of betting following the flop. I picked up my cards and saw one of the best possible hands you could be dealt - Ace and King of the same suit, diamonds. The way the royal flush jackpot works, a progressive amount is paid for a royal flush of diamonds, the longer it goes without someone hitting one, the higher it gets. For the other suits, there is a set amount of money won for a royal flush, one thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine dollars. The progressive jackpot for a diamond royal was up to five thousand dollars. Though the thought of hitting it had entered my mind once or twice, the staggering odds had me more focused on the tourney than the jackpot. Back to the hand.

So there I was with my Ace, King suited. Everyone called and it was up to me to either check or raise. With a strong hand like Ace, King suited, you want to raise as high as you can before the flop to eliminate players with inferior hands from seeing the flop, and possibly getting lucky and drawing two pair or even three of a kind. My raise didnt scare many people though, and all but one called. The dealer set three cards aside in the middle of the table and slowly turned them over. Bam! Exactly the flop that I wanted to see with so many callers - Ace of spades, Queen of diamonds, Jack of diamonds. This meant that I had the top pair on the board, and strong odds to draw into a straight or a flush, needing only a Ten or a diamond. Being first to act, I checked in hopes of someone betting into me, so that I could raise them. This is a common tactic deployed by players with strong hands to trap other players into committing to the pot with a weaker hand, because your check doesnt show any strength. Another player bet, the rest folded back to me and I raised his bet. The players behind me folded and it was back on the original bettor to either see my raise, fold, or re-raise me. I wanted him to call, with a fold not giving me a big enough pot, and a re-raise indicating that he had a pocket pair - Queens or Jacks being likely. He re-raised me though, strongly representing three of a kind or two pair. I called, waiting to see if I could draw into my straight or flush. The next card was set aside on the table and, with almost agonizingly slow speed, turned over. Queen of clubs, in a moment, my amazing hand turned to garbage. He was almost certainly holding a full house now, and possibly even four of a kind. I checked to him so he couldnt raise my bet, I was still determined to see him until the last card to make sure he wasnt bluffing. He bet and I called. The last card was set face down and flipped over onto the middle of the table. The red Ten! I was now holding a royal flush, not only the best possible poker hand, but the key to five thousand dollars. My mind was racing, thinking of ways to spend the money already. I bet and, as expected, he raised, suspecting that I had made either my flush or a straight and that his full house would still hold up. I then re-raised, and he re-raised it again. I called, wanting to re-raise again naturally, but there had already been four raises, the maximum amount. With the betting finished, I triumphantly turned over my cards and the dealer read my hand. "Ace high straight" he said, I was confused. Why didnt he notice that I had a royal flush? I looked at my cards, Ace of diamonds, King of diamonds. Then I noticed the board. Ace of spades, Queen of diamonds, Jack of diamonds, Queen of clubs, Ten of hearts. My heart sunk. Naturally my opponent flipped over his Queen, Jack hand - revealing the full house that I correctly read him for. As he scooped up all my chips, I just sat there, staring into space. No one said a word, but I knew what they were all thinking. "What an awful player, betting into the full house like that". I had lost most of my chips on that hand, and that wasnt even what bothered me. I had played too fast, and it cost me more than half my stack, it cost me my dignity. Everyone at the table thought I was just another sucker. No longer was I the great card player who could read exactly what everyone was holding, I was now the fool who couldnt even read his own hand correctly. Of course, most of this was in my own mind, no one had said anything or even given me a second look. But I was embarrassed nonetheless.

From that day on, I learned to take things slowly, being careful to always make sure I knew what I was holding before venturing to guess what my opponents had. There is no time limit in poker, so theres no reason to play as if youre on the clock. When an inferior hand takes down a better one, such as Queen, Jack off-suited beating Ace, King suited, it is known as a bad beat. But when a full house beats a royal flush, and a player loses his self-respect, that is the ultimate bad beat.

Order your War or no War paper at affordable prices! Recently we, the United States of America, have been contemplating whether or not they should go to war with Iraq while a dispute is arising in the Philippines. Many American soldiers have already been diploided. President Bush has made us aware we soon will be invading this country. This is happening because Sadaam Hussein refuses to turn over the illegal weapons he possesses. War with Iraq will impinge on the United States greatly. It will cost tens of billions of dollars, alienate our Europe and the Middle East allies and kill many civilians.

An American attack on Iraq could profoundly affect the American economy. If oil supplies are disrupted prices will augment sharply and the United States and other countries will have pay. We are currently paying Israel billion dollars to launch missiles from their country; this is absurd. The United States of America is already in an ample amount of debt. If the United States goes to war with Iraq, major effects on the financial markets, retail spending, business investment, travel and other key elements of the economy.

Going to war with Iraq could present a complicated political problem for President Bush during the Congressional mid-term elections. It may also affect his 004 re-election campaign as he manages a war. Americans will want to understand the case for a war better than they do now. They want to know if President Bush has made the correct decision.

Europe and the Middle East are important allies; America cannot risk losing their ties. Europe and the Middle East do not agree with the war and do not wish to back us up if we need support. The Middle East is already in flames and they do not agree to open a third front in their region.

Perhaps most importantly, invading Iraq will not lessen the threat of terrorism against the United States. Invasion may actually increase it! No proof links Iraq to the September 11 attacks. A United States war against Iraq could incite a stronger support for Al Qaeda across the world of the Arab and Muslim.

The President, his cabinet, and his group of pundits, have now made it clear why Saddam Hussein is a serious threat. The only good thing that will come from war with Iraq is the United States could gain enormous leverage over the world oil production. This still is not a valid reason to go to war. In the words of Edwin Star, "War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!"

Masculinity in Shakespeares Macbeth

Order your Masculinity in Shakespeares Macbeth paper at affordable prices! In the great masterpiece Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, deals with many different hidden themes. One of the best-hidden themes in Macbeth is manhood. Shakespeare's descriptions of his characters give real descriptions of living beings, not actors upon a stage. His manuscript is able to show the masculinity of men as well of women. Masculinity is not just for men; some women are just like men in their quest for ambition.

In the play Macbeth, it seems that Lady Macbeth is a man trapped in a woman's body. She is filled with greed, envy, and hate, and she will use any person or any thing until she gets what she wants or accomplishes her evil goals. In the play she hides her true feelings and pretends to be a typical lady. However, her evil nature shines through her false mask. Lady Macbeth is comparable to a rose. A rose is pretty and smells great but if one is not careful, the thorns will prick the fingers. Lady Macbeth appears to lose her sanity the night of Duncan's murder and cannot relate to her feelings or guilty conscience. She admits that she "would, while it was smiling in my face … dash itsains out (I.vii.64-66)". This really means that Lady Macbeth is colder than ice and seems to have lost all perception of the distinction between right and wrong. Then she tells her husband "a little water clears us of this deed" (II.ii.86)". Lady Macbeth expresses power over Macbeth in this scene. She shows a great deal more masculinity than Macbeth when it comes to murdering Duncan. She compares the power of her driving force to kill to the willingness to kill her first-born child. She also puts up a great show of shoving the guilt off to the side with her dainty hand washing that clears her of the blood, evidence, and guilt. But Lady Macbeth only thought the killing would be easy to accomplish, when in reality it was not as easy as she ever said or thought it would be as it would soon take its toll on her psyche.

In the play, to die without any fear seems to be the highest accomplishment of one's life. It seems that not fearing death is more important than inventing a great invention that could change the world. When young Siward dies, his father is more concerned about how he was killed rather than the fact that he was killed. Siwards father wanted to know where the entry wounds on his son were located and when Ross told him that the fatal wounds were found on the front of his body, his father is proud andags about how his son met his deathavely, "Why then, God's solider be he! (V.viii.55)". Siward father seems to have no grief over his son's death because he knows that his son did not cower from a battle that was inevitably going to end with the death of one of the two dueling men. His son died for a noble cause of subduing a tyrant and for facing his death head-on, his father praises him by declaring him a soldier of God. If the wounds on Siwards body were discovered to have entered from behind, it would have been deduced that Siward had cowardly attempted to run from the duel while Macbeth could easily skewer him from behind. Thus, Siwards father would be disgraced that a man of his descent was too cowardly to face his death and die as a loyal servant to the greater good.

Ambition appears in all men, and all men strive to fill their need for it. The only difference is that some men will go father than others. Some men will do anything to accomplish their dreams no matter what they have to sacrifice. Macbeth's problem was that he became addicted to the power of the crown. Once he became Thane of Cawdor, he caught, fish, line and sinker, and from thereon his desire was insatiable. When Macbeth started his reign as king, he killed anyone he deemed to be a threat to his crown. He even went so far to hire murderers to have his best friend killed because he wanted to remain a king forever and none not of his descent would succeed him. At this point, Macbeth became a monster, killing innocent people simply due to his psychotic sense of insecurity. This power is what led up to Macbeths destruction and ultimately, his death.Professional writers help on Masculinity in Shakespeares Macbeth essays

Shakespeare is successful in showing many different themes. One of the main themes in Macbeth is manhood. Shakespeare theneaks up the main themes into smaller themes. Shakespeare uses small themes like ambition, and conquering the fear of death to help build upon the importance of the main theme. All men are born good, but, just like Macbeth, people have the ability to become evil when they become aware of it. Even though we first discovered Lady Macbeth and Macbeth on side with evil, their courage is still admirable. They rose in power, but at the pinnacle of their glory, everything fell and their world collapsed, but nevertheless, Macbeth mustered up his courage and resolved to fight to the end.

Nicks Character Interpretation

Order essays on great gatsby nick carraway and other topics

Nick Carraways judgments of many of the main characters at the end of the book are very different from the way he viewed the same characters earlier in the book. Nick is a dynamic character in that in the beginning of the novel he is fascinated by the quick, high-intensity New York lifestyle, but at the end of the novel he becomes fed up with all of the lies and finds this lifestyle not fitting. This change in sentiment greatly affects his feelings toward the fast-paced, dishonest characters he is surrounded by in this novel. Three characters that he originally enjoys but later finds to be disgusting to him are Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, and Jordan Baker.

In the beginning of the book Nick had a good relationship with Daisy. Daisy is Nicks cousin but they were not very close emotionally, and he did not know her very well. Nick was in an interesting position in which he was playing a matchmaker for Daisys affair with Gatsby. As the novel progressed he began to recognize that she was extremely insecure, and was a very shallow person. Despite this he still likes her until the end of the novel when Nick realized that Daisy has no morals. Nick decides she has no morals when she refuses to take the blame for Myrtles murder. Nick felt that Daisy was responsible not only for Myrtles murder but also Gatsbys.

Early on in the book Tom was a strong acquaintance of Nicks. Nick knew that Tom was a washed up jock but nonetheless he still enjoyed his company, and they would frequently spend time together. Nick began to dislike Tom when he realized his complete disregard for other people and selfishness. For example, Tom was having an affair with Myrtle whom he was very rude to, but would have killed Daisy had he found hard proof of her affair with Gatsby. At the end of the novel Nick was disgusted with Tom and even refused to shake his hand. Nick knew that Tom told George Wilson, Myrtles husband, that Gatsby was the one who killed Myrtle and refused to tell him that in fact Daisy was driving the car. Nick becomes fed up with the constant web of lies intended to maintain high social status in the Eggs. He realizes that the people he is surrounded by have no morals and the only thing that matters to them is looking good in front of the rest of the rich crowd. Tom is the epitome of this lifestyle and Nick grows to be disgusted with him.

Throughout the novel Nick seems to be in love with the beautiful golfer, Jordan Baker. He loves her because she is a very viant character and is attracted to her intelligence. He maintains this image of Jordan until the end of the novel when he realizes that she is no better than the rest of the hierarchy of the Eggs. He finally begins to realize that she is selfish and has no awareness for the people around her. He also realizes that she is dishonest and has the same primary goal of climbing in social status. Nick is still fascinated by her through the whole novel but no longer has the same loving feelings toward her.

Nick is accused of being a sour character that is out to hurt people. This is not true because Nick doesnt have a change of heart but rather he just realizes that he has been misled the whole time. He simply realizes that he can not continue living in that world, and that the people who surround him are rotten people.

Nick simply becomes fed up with the fallacy of the Eggs and everything in them. He got sick of the people, the parties, and the lack of human realness. He needed to leave town and head west. Nick realized that honesty and kindness are the true virtues, and that money and extravagance is not important. I think that Nick would live a very meaningful life if he made it out west.
