Waugh-Tandy

There are several states where rent to own

contracts are illegal. In those states they use the

Purchase your paper on A Rent-A-Center's Survival Story term rental agreement contract. I was totally

knowledgeable of this when I walked into East

Stroudsburg, PA Rent-A-Center. Unfortunately I gave

into my deep desires and over one month signed four

rent to own contracts. No credit check required and

you could purchase optional liability insurance- what

more could I ask? This all transpired in about October

of 2000. I am only now trying to make some sense out

of the whole humiliating experience.

It became burdensome making our $139.00 weekly

payments. The company was advertising in the local

newspaper for Account Managers, Assistant Store

Managers, and Store Managers. The company would be

opening another store in Bethlehem, PA. I went in to

make my weekly payment. The District Manager was

there. I was introduced to Mr. Louis Hall as an

interested candidate qualified to apply for the

position of Account Manager. I expressed a desire to

blend in with the all male less than 40 group. He was

extremely charming and encouraged me to fill out an

application. The company ran two adds for employment

that year; one in September and one in December. I

went to the newspaper later on and got photocopies ofthe ads.

Back to my story, I made those payments for eight

months. When I missed a payment we were charged $5.00

per item late charge, plus the next weeks payment. Our

bill was then $298.00! Although all the contracts

stated weekly as well as bi monthly bill per item, I

opted to pay weekly. Yes if I made all my weekly

payments I would be paying roughly $1092.31 more. I

did not remember signing anything declaring I had to

make weekly payments. I guess I wanted to pay weekly

so I would never fall behind far enough for them to

repossess our things. I really had another thing

coming.

Truthfully I do not know how I stayed a customer

so long. They scratched the night tables- both had

matching gouges. The deliverymen did this loading the

truck toing them. The computer never worked

correctly. The "E" support was non operational and the

fax program was not working. The printer did not print

most of the time either. Iought the whole thing

back to the store and they sent it out to be fixed. In

the mean time I was issued an identical printer that

worked 100%. When my printer was returned fixed, I

needed to replace both ink cartridges and it was a

long time before I was able to use it. Yes all the

while I was making my payments.

It finally happened on August 25, 2001. The store

reposed everything for non-payment of $298.00. I

called the store that afternoon and talked directly to

Mr. Hall. I was very apologetic over the situation. I

also reminded him of all the resumes I had left with

the Store Manager. I left five resumes and filled out

two employment applications; one in person and one on

line. He was very rude and auptly said there were no

employment positions available with in any of the

company stores. He also said any "holes in the

schedule would be filled by other employees". I was

mortified over the repossessing of the four items, but

now I was totally humiliated over his treatment of me.

The truck came at 6:00pm on Saturday night and

everyone in my neighborhood was outside enjoying the

summer weather. The deliverymen removed the washer and

dryer, bedroom set, computer and printer, and the

45-inch big screen television. The laundry room had a

funny smell but I thought it was just my imagination.

The next day I went in there to clean up all the lint

on the floor. The walls were covered in black mold-

from about where the washing machine was standing all

the way down to the floor. I began cleaning the walls

with Clorox bleach in a spray bottle. I scrubbed the

walls until the plasterboard paper was coming off. I

was so up set because our landlord was not going to

renew our lease as it was. (I cannot blame him the

repossession made us a poor credit risk). I was scared

he would take legal action and make us pay for the

damages!

With in one or two days of cleaning the walls I

became terribly sick with an upper respiratory ailment

that required treatment at the local hospital on

September 13, 2001. I hadonchial pneumonia; at

about the same time my youngest son got an earache,

also requiring antibiotics. I still believe the mold

made us sick. I sued the store for $8,000.00 at the

local magistrates office. I felt the stores

responsibilities fell short. If the deliverymen would

have hooked up the appliances correctly and cleaned up

the area before leaving we would not have had the

black mold. I also felt their contracts were devised

to deliberately deceive people how much more they

would pay by paying weekly. The local Judge disagreed

and we lost.

I contacted the Pennsylvania Human Relations

Commission regarding the companys hiring practices.

They have been very helpful. I filed two separate

complaints against the Rent-A-Center Company. The

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has a current

case pending a settlement. I was so elated to read in

their press release dated March 8, 2002. I went

directly back to the Store Manager and reapplied for a

third time. This time I was allowed to take two

separate pre-employment tests. I was so happy; I took

my time and did my best. These tests were authorized

through the E.E.O.C. Two days past and I went to the

store to ask how did I do? I had left resume number

six but was not interviewed at the time of the test. I

was told I had failed the visual by one question. I

was not allowed to review either test at that time.

The Store Manager was extremely cordial and courteous

but no interview. I filed with PA. H. R. C. I was so

angry they were a big help. I am a part of the current

court litigations, from my first complaint dating back

to October 2000. I also had an appointment to view my

test results with a case manager. I went but I am not

still satisfied.

I am a white female age 47; I have slight vision

impairment. I have a lazy eye, since birth. I read

much slower than most. I was given a timed test for 50

questions to compare same or different. I could only

finish 46 of which I got 39 correct. The case manager

explained the significance of the tests. She also was

supportive towards my position- I will get some of the

initial settlement, she said. I did above the required

score on the customer service section and I have

excellent business skills. I signed the with drawl

forms to with draw my complaint, the one from March

2002. I guess we won the war but lost the battle- is

how I feel.

I have been researching every aspect of the

Rent-A-Center Corporation on the Internet. I have

found out some startling facts regarding the company.

The company was sued for non-payment of overtime to

Assistant Managers and Store Managers. The company was

also liable for invasive testing of employees. The

employees were requested to submit to 500 questions

mostly not related to their actual job skills or

abilities to function on a business level. The company

made an agreement to pay $2 million for the people who

took the test. This was in a California court. They

agreed to pay $2,000.00 to each employee who took the

test and failed it. They also agreed to pay $1250.00

to each employee who passed, because of the

invasiveness of the questions. The company claimed the

purpose of the tests were to devise a profile of each

employee according to the deviation of the answers to

the true and false questions. The court ruled the

questions were not pertaining to their abilities to

perform the job functions.

As I stated earlier, I am a 47 years old. I have

lived through a life experience similar to this

before. Nothing they could say to me would change my

mind; then or now. I never began my adult working

career wanting to become a martyr. Although I always

have had similar views as Womens Rights Organizations

I chose not to belong to any. I did not want to become

stigmatized by belonging to them. I am proud to say in

1974 I was one of the first female employees at the

New York Daily News. The industry did not sign a

consent decree until 1979. I was invited back to work

for the company. I was very naïve at the tender age of

24. The women were overwhelmingly applying to

"shape-up" with the men. They came in with their

manicures and platform sandals wanting to be hired

because of their gender.

I became totally disillusioned on why I had

started there to begin with. I saw women working in

crews of four and five manning entire presses. It was

very exciting. I did feel vindicated. Except when I

saw less qualified females, wining discrimination,

their refusal to do equal work use to grade on my

nerves. I have often compared the similarities between

the two companies. Many years ago I went to "shape-up"

at the New York Times. I was the only one not hired on

the floor- they had one more job left. The janitor was

given the job and it was held until he finished his

first job. I was asked if I wanted to "fool around in

the office with the Bosses". I left quietly. In my

current position I have been forced to watch

inexperienced and improperly trained delivery people

ruin my home and make my son and I sick. I have also

witnessed about five different men, under 40 get hired

and trained and watched them get promotions. The one

thing I have learned is I need to understand why these

men have acted this way to me.

After reading the news article on

Rent-A-Centers invasive employee testing policy, I

have compassion for the Store Manager at the East

Stroudsburg store. I do not know if the companyoke

any laws here in Pennsylvania, or even if the

employees here in Pennsylvania received any of the

settlement money. Just the reality of this helps me to

have compassion. I have a stronger understanding for

the human condition thatought about his actions.

The rest I will leave to the courts to figure out. I

hope justices prevail in this no win situation.

Order your alas babylon paper at affordable prices! The novel, Alas Babylon, written by Pat Frank, describes a small Flordia town and its

efforts to survive the consequences of an extreme nuclear war. Those who sufficiently responded

to this difficult challenge set before them were Randyagg, Dan Gunn, Alice Cooksey, and

Florence Wechek. Those individuals who were unsuccessful with this devastating time included Edgar Quisenberry, Bubba Offenhaus, Porky Logan, and Pete Hernandez. This book illustrates

genuine examples of how superior creatures survive during harsh and cruel times.

During this period, those animals that became savage beasts and would do

anything for food survived, while the animals that were controlled by humans did not.

Animals and humans also evolved. The dogs of Fort Repose had become wolves, which found and

caught their prey any way possible. The cats are one of the few animals that did survive. "The

strong survive. The frail die. The exotic fish die because the aquarium isnt heated. The common

guppy lives. So does the tough catfish. The house cat turns hunter and eats the pet bird. If he

didnt, hed starve. Thats the way it is, and thats the way its going to be" (176). The controlled

animals put up less of a fight to survive. Anthony the pet bird failed to survive because the cat over

powered the little bird. Basically, in every creature lies an extinct...an extinct to survive.

Randyagg is a natural leader and a quick thinker, and he had his mindset that

he was going to live even if he had to fight for his life. "Were going to have to be tough,

we are going to have to be catfish" (175). The communitys doctors had either been

killed or vanished. Dan Gunn, now the only physician in Fort Repose, tried to help

everyone who was sick, which helped him survive because he knew the people of the community

needed is capabilities. After being beaten by the highwaymen, he shows how strong and

determined he was. Fort Reposes liarian, Alice Cooksey, had the strength to keep on living

because she knew that the liary was the only source of learning for the people, especially the

children. She felt fulfilled, even important. (187).

Although many people fought for their entire being, some, including Edgar

Quisenberry, decided it wasnt forth the fight. Edgar was a coward because he couldnt

face the facts; he couldnt bare a world that didnt use any type of currency and he

wouldnt allow himself to be humiliated, therefore, he committed suicide. "He had been a

banker all his life and that was the way he was going to die, a banker" (Pg.18). The

hospitals no longer contained insulin or substitutes for insulin. (Pg.166) Lavina

McGovern died because her body couldnt produce enough insulin, so her body became

weak and she couldnt survive. Lavina soon died after lying in a coma for 48 hours.

(Pg.166) " Bubba Offenhaus was the Deputy Director of Civil Defense in the town. He gave

all the Civil Defense pamphlets to the liarian because they took up to much space in

his office and if the people could have seen these pamphlets they might have had a

better chance to support themselves longer. Even though he didnt die he was a failure

because he sat at home and did nothing… but wait to die. After everything was sold in his

grocery store, Pete Hernandez had stored some supplies for him and his sister but, he

was so greedy that he was happy about making ten dollars a pound for salt. Ten dollars a

pound for salt!….. Aint that something! (Ch.7). Stupidity and greediness was Petes

downfall and wearing contaminated watches and other jewelry killed him. "DANGER! KEEP OUT!

RADIATOIN!" (08). Porky Logan took everything he could out of a demolished jewelry store and

sold some of the items to the Hernandez for food and other items. His greediness killed him

because he should have just sold all the jewelry, but he liked it so much he had to keep it. The

metal in the jewelry absorbed the radiation poison, nearly killing anyone and anything that came in

contact with it.

The evolutionary theory that only the strong survive stated in Darwins Origin of

Species is well focused throughout the novel. Many found their place in life and those

who could not find it in life instead found it in death. Alas Babylon illustrates genuine

examples of how superior creatures survive through cruel and harsh times

I havent had many intimate relationships in my life; Ive only had two physical relationships. I was a late bloomer upon the issue of entering relationships due to my thoughts on my physical appearance. During high school, I was one of those kids that never really said anything in classes and never spoke to girls that much. My friends and I started to hang out with girls more often and thats when I "fell in love" with my ex-girlfriend. This was the start of a relationship that was going nowhere, even though I had no idea at the time. Kristen was a nice girl who at first I did not find all that attractive but I absolutely loved her personality. We started to "date", we never really went out all that much, and we mostly hung out with her and her friends at her house. This relationship only lasted a mere month and a half; she sadly put it to an end. Now that I look back on it, Im glad she did because neither one of us were all that happy due to circumstances. I think the most that weve hung out may have been ten or eleven times during that month and a half. I was always sad that we didnt get to hang out that much, and when plans didnt fall through Id always get upset. That was the basis of theeak up. After this relationship I was heartoken, my first love had shot me down, those times were very hard to cope with. After a about two or three months, I decided that it feels a lot better to be single, especially since Im in high school and it would be a lot easier to get to know girls. I do not regret anything from this friendship; we are currently good friends. At first the relationship was very good but then it turned into a worse one due to circumstances.

The summer before freshman year of college was my best summer ever. My friends Chris, Jimmie, Erika and I used to hang out almost every single day. If I werent with one of them I was with the other, and no matter what we would have fun. After the summer Erika and I got closer on a more emotional level. We hung out all the time, late on school nights, on weekends, it didnt matter, and we were always together. I still remember the uneasiness that I felt the first time I was in her bedroom, my stomach full of butterflies. I knew this time that I had found someone that I truly like and would want to spend the rest of my life with. Reading this from someone elses standpoint, it may sound ludicrous, but I know what I feel, and it is that. Weve been dating for just over a year now and things are going great. Obviously weve had our hard times, but we have also gotten through them. Currently she is in high school, and I think the ultimate test will be when she goes away to college, that is the one thing that Im worried about. Im worried that shell meet some incredible guy and leave me for him. This relationship is the best individual relationships Ive had with a single individual by far.

Relationships are sometimes taken for granted, they are there one day and the next they may not be. I grew up in Hawaii until the age of 1, and every summer before I was 1, I went to New York to visit my grandparents. I remember when the summer before third grade I came back to Hawaii to find that my mother wasnt there and wasnt coming back. I dont quite remember what my father told me but I know I was really sad. My relationship with my father grew greatly after this happened, I felt as if he were spoiling me but not monetarily. I still wonder what it wouldve been like to grow up with the both of them in Hawaii but I will never know. One thing leads to another, and I eventually ended up in New York for good, not just for a summer vacation. My father works for American Airlines and he got laid off in Hawaii, but then he was transferred to Florida. In Florida I was alone quite often after school Id come home and no one was there. My father wouldnt get home until 7 or 8 at night, which was a long time home alone when you are only 1. Florida was a turning point for me; I saw that I didnt need my father as much as I thought I did. I felt more independent in a sense, due to all the time I had to my self. The relationship that I had with my father was shaped by the fact that he was the only parent. I grew closer to him while I had the chance to.I look at the relationship that my uncle has with my grandparents and I see that he is very attached to them. In a way I find it sad because I see him so often, hes 8 and single. I know my uncle loves them very much and would be devastated if anything should happen to them, as would I. Even though I dont have that close of a relationship with my parents, I believe that if I had the chance I still would not, due to my stubbornness. Its funny people think, I used to think that my parents divorced because of me. That is why I visited with a psychologist a few times when I was younger, to alleviate these thoughts from my head.

I live with my grandparents now, and our relationship was better while I was in high school since i was around more. I now have a car, a job and college, so things are very frantic within my life. I talk to my grandmother sometimes if I have a problem, but most of the time I talk to my girlfriend about my problems. The relationship with my grandparents is the best it could be, at least they dont want to kick me out of the house. The fact that I can talk to my girlfriend about my problems is a big booster to me, because I dont hide anything from her.

I see a relationship that is probably not going to work out that well with my friend. His best friend seems to like his girlfriend so things are getting kind of tense. Falling for someone elses girlfriend is never a good thing, and it should never have gotten that far unless both the guy and girl feel that way. This can turn into a bad relationship and maybe a fight or two.

Another good relationship that I have is with a coworker of mine that I met last year. We talked all the time at work and became very good friends and kept in touch over the winter pretty well. This is a good relationship because we could talk about many things and had many things in common.

With my friend Jimmie, hes probably my best guy friend. At one point he told his girlfriend that me and my girlfriend had had sex and i got very mad about that. I didnt want her to find out because his girlfriend has a big mouth. People found out that didnt have to know at all, so me and Jimmie did not speak for awhile, Id say for at least 4 months. I was so mad at him, whenever I saw him driving by me or whatever hed wave but I wouldnt. Now that I look back, it was only a phase and we are good friends now. This relationship definitely shows the best and worst.

By 1917, the Great war had been dragging on for many years with heavy causalities, this had been resulting in a stalemate from trench warfare. When Germany sank the Lusitania(a passenger ship with many Americans aboard) off the coast off Ireland, Americans were disgusted and outraged. The sinking of the Lusitania was the major cause of why the Americans decided to enter the war. It had lead to a chain of events that made the U.S. the world super power it is today.

For many years, President Woodrow Wilson secretly supported the triple entente, and wanted to help with the war effort. The American population, however, felt that the war was a European affair which dealt with old European rivalries. This opinion changed when the Germans sunk the Lusitania. The sinking of the Lusitania gave President Wilson enough ammunition to sway the Government and the American public to enter the war. Wilson dispatched more than 500 000 troops to Europe. The Americans had an overpowering strength and easily defeated Germany. Germany had no option but to surrender to a cease fire.

If the Americans had not entered the war at that point, Germany, who had freed themselves of two fronts by negotiating a peace contract with the new Bolshevik Government in Russia, may have succeeded in reaching Paris. However, the Americans did enter the war( heavily influenced by the sinking of the Lusitania) and supplied a humiliating defeat to Germany. The largest impact caused by the Americans involvement, was forcing Germany to accept the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles. These insulting terms included: the ban of battleships and submarines, the disbanding of its air force, the payment of large reparations and the return of the provinces, Lorraine and Alsace to France. The citizens of Germany fell deep into despair. The resentment caused by this treaty was a main cause of World War II.

At the end of World War I, the stage was set for the United States to emerge as a world power. Although Greatitain and France rejected President Wilsons 14 Points peace plan, they now accepted America into the prominent circle of the European countries. When World War II erupted America was a key player in world politics. It was imperative to the allies that the U.S. would support the cause. America was not fully active in the war until power hungry Japan attacked their base in the Pacific Ocean. Again, Americas strong military presence allowed the allied countries to defeat Germany and Japan.

College papers on The Lusitania: The Most Defining Event of The 20th Century

After the death and destruction of World War II, many countries were devastated. The U.S. was strong, being on an isolated continent saved them from being damaged by bombs and land warfare. America was now one of two new superpowers who came out on top. The Americans now had the money, technology, political influence and military clout to dominate each of these areas around the world. From what seemed to be such a small insignificant event, set off a chain reaction that made the United states who they are today.

Shared by many Americans, Keith Stroup founded the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana laws or NORML in 170. NORML views the laws against the possession and sale of marijuana as unfair and works to reform them.
