In the painters eyes, he sees a motionless picture that will never continue on to become reality. Without the poem, the picture, an innocent bystander has no clue as to what is going to happen. This person is portraying what is inevitable of the three boats. The doomed fate is this great white wave is going to crush, beat and swallow these men in an instant. No time to react, no time to think, and no time to even say a prayer.

The picture presents a multi faceted appearance. The Great Wave strongly suggests a tsunami (tidal wave) that is going to over come the men with the white faces. On the same token, the picture suggests a snowy mountain with a cliff that hangs over the edge. The snow and ice that hangs over the edge gives a appearance of hands trying to grasp the boats with the men with the white faces. Its a narrow interpretation that shows a partial appearance of a jaw of an animal looking for its prey. Another interpretation of the poem says that the wave is like a mountain that sits still in the sky aimlessly.

Ararat is in all the mens eyes. It is far, far away looking up at this enormous white wave. The viciousness caused by the enormity of the wave can arouse fear without even viewing the people up close. The thought of this wave so close to shore yet still a distance away, will make your hair stand up. One could speculate that fearless men who have seen much danger could become deathly afraid.

Write a research paper on The great wave On the other hand some would look at that wave and take it as a challenge. The conclusion could be drawn that, this wave is something that we as men could go through and come sailing out into the serene sea on the other side.

Furthermore the three boats of men are each at different parts of the wave. Some of the men are feeling strong although they just have seen a monstrous wave. Some men in the middle boat could possibly have sentiment that they are going to die. In the last boat, the sailors all see what the other two sea vessels have just gone through. There is no means of escape. Who will make it and who will not is a mystery.

The poem suggests that all the men are safe. In reality, the picture suggests a frozen scene. One could only speculate what actually would happen in the real world. The snow covering the wave resembles snow covering a mountain.

The prophet Daniel interpreted what our author of the poem "The Great Wave" saw in the picture. The writing in the air, which is an omen of potential disaster, is like the writing on the wall of Babylon. The Japanese proverb is very visible. Our interpretation of the proverb is of such high disaster like in the English vernacular "I told you so" in the novel Moby Dick.

The bystander, it seems senses only disaster will follow at the tick of the clock when he looks at the picture. Looking at the picture as if it was real life and imagining the range of emotions that ran through the bystanders mind. This stimulates the kind of emotion that makes a grown man cry because he saw an impending catastrophe. The fear-evoking picture will make a sailor vomit if presented in the wrong time and cause untold nightmares in some others.

To contrast the poem and the picture one would see that the writer was not concerned about foreboding danger. The author sees the picture as a motionless, thought provoking, literary device. To most observers this pictureings sudden feelings of death to mind and is not easily shaken. The men with the white faces suggest fright. The snow on mount Fuji and the foam on the waves suggest a difference in temperature. Also, the difference in the color is that the sky is usually a blue color and not aownish color. The picture infers there is real danger to these strangers that are sailing along to Mount Ararat. These kinds of wave are caused by strong wind and the painter tries to show words in its place. The words in the sky imply that there is danger for these poor sailors at this instant.

The realty of Mount Fuji doesnt apply to these sailors because in realty the wave will fall on them even though there is writing in the sky to warn of impending disaster. The sea is not as calm as the snow. The wave doesnt lean on the sky as it moves on and another one will come and finish what the last did not. Anger, the wave along with the winds bends under pressure toing coherence to the picture.

Cyprus is a petite island in the east Mediterranean near Turkey and Greece.

As I stepped wearily out of the plane the warm Cyprian aireezed across my face. Suddenly refreshed, I walked down the steps to the tarmac and entered the airport bus. I was lucky and sitting at the front of the plane, so I was on the bus with relative ease. As I sat nervously in my seat I observed the many holiday makers pouring onto the bus. When it was full, and I mean literally full, the bus departed for the terminal. In it bus it was so full there was no way of reclining comfortably.

When arriving at the terminal I was amused to find it was a single storey building that was as insubstantial as a cardboard box. The next task was to find security as the signs were, as everyone found out the hard way, all pointing in the wrong direction. Everyone must have explored the whole airport before actually finding the security. In the time it had taken me to find the security the queues were now probably the longest the terminal had ever seen in recorded history.

College papers on travel

It took about half an hour to get to the security desk. When I finally got there the Cyprian security guard took my passport, looked at the picture and I could see a little grin on his face. This was due to my passport photo of me looking like a total fool. The man gave me back my passport and let me pass. The next major task was to find my baggage. As with finding the security desk the terminal had no signs pointing in the right direction at all. I thought instead of walking around the rest of the unexplored terminal I would ask a member of staff. So I walked up to the first person I could find and as luck had it she could not speak a word of English. So I gave up and followed a big crowd of people to their destination. They led me to the baggage area which was a major accomplishment. By this time nearly all of the bags had been claimed but a few. So I grabbed my bags and walked out of the terminal exhaustedly.

Once outside I found a taxi I liked the look of and hopped in. I said to the driver "can you take me to Kermia Beech Hotel?" Like a speeding bullet he left the taxi rank. On my journey I came to the conclusion that the Cyprian taxi drivers must be the fastest and nuttiest drivers in the world. About half an hour into the journey I had fallen asleep despite the deadly driving.

On arrival to the resort, I was awoken by a quite chubby Cyprian man holding my baggage shouting, "Good evening sir," into the taxi. He then accompanied me to the hotel reception. Once there I checked in and then I was shown to my little bungalow type room. Then like a magician he has disappeared into the darkness. Upon entering the bungalow I could not help but notice the faint scent of soap. I wondered around my home to be for the next two weeks. Then entering the bathroom the soap smell was at its strongest. I looked around and saw a tray so full of soap it could have cleaned the rest of the hotel. I walked softly into the bedroom and fell asleep on the extremely comfortable bed.

The next thing I knew it was 10 oclock in the morning when I had an unasked for alarm call from the reception. I was about to walk out of the room when there was a knock on the door. I opened the door cautiously and was greeted by a cleaner who literally barged me out of the way and started to clean. I smiled and ran out of the bungalow and down to the pool as fast as my legs could carry me.

Once there I sat down and ordered someeakfast. It was now about half past ten and about 0°C. It was August so it was the hottest part of the year. As I was sitting eating my cereal and drinking a nice cold chocolate milkshake I could not help notice about ten old ladies attempting the mornings water aerobics in the pool. I found this extremely comical and I couldnt stop laughing. This was because it reminded me of ten hippos thrashing around a swamp.

I had finished my cereal now so I went to find a sun bed. I found a sun bed near the pool and as I was watching the aerobics I lay back and closed my eyes. This would my home for the next two weeks.

In the advert the aim of the company is to advertise their product to asoad a target audience as possible. The main objective of this advert is to persuade the audience that they could change themselves for the better by buying the product. The advert is for the new Ford Focus, and in it a woman drives a man to the airport. As he leaves he proposes marriage and the woman uses the car to reject his offer.

As the advert starts, we have the establishing shot of the airport with the Ford Focus pulling up outside it. It is then a straight shot into the cars interior showing a man in the passenger seat text appears with this shot in small writing across the bottom of the screen displaying information such as "Leather interiors Alloy wheels" which may not be included in the dialogue of voice over.

Shot three, still inside the car, is of the woman in the drivers seat; it then switches to the passenger side as the man begins to get out of the car. As he gets out he turns back into the car and we have a shot of him looking in through the open door and he proposes marriage in an authoritative, assuming manner. (The actual line is "Oh, and youll marry me, right?" this is completely unromantic and is a statement rather than a question.) This remark is splitting the target audience but not excluding them (e.g. Both sexes are able to relate to what is being said) which would defeat the object of the advert. This is because the women in the audience would recognise the chauvinistic attitude displayed by the man and understand the indignation felt by the woman. The men however may well associate themselves with the position of the male. College papers on Detailed analysis of ford focus advert As the man leaves the car and walks into the airport with a smug confident air, background music starts ("This is a Mans World"). This implication of a sexual game between the man and the woman incites the interest of the viewers without focusing too much on the car itself.

In these first few moments of the advert we see that both the characters are well dressed, quite young and attractive, and also seem fairly successful too. This alerts the viewers interest and attracts theoad target audience at which it is aimed.

The following shot is inside the car and is of the woman in the drivers seat. The shocked look turns to an expression of amused confidence, and she pulls the car out of the airport. The text changes at this point to small print of how you can pay (per month etc). Next we get a close-up shot of her hand as she changes gear. This is included in order to show more of the cars interior and to display more of the cars features. We then have an exterior shot looking onto the car from the side. This is the first full shot of the cars exterior and it shows the car in good light and flattering camera angles it was used in order to establish the model to an extent where people will be able to recognise it.

The shot which follows is interior once more, looking from the passenger seat to the driver. The woman is looking confident, happy and somewhat pleased with herself. This turns into an exterior shot of the car turning off the road into a sort of building site, during this shot the text changes once more to show more information about finances. These small text captions are included because they contain information, which they have to provide legally. Any bigger however and the text would detract from the narrative of the advert. This information is also rather uninteresting. It is therefore as important as possible for Ford to keep this information as unobtrusive as possible.

Next we have a birds eye view of the building site, basically to establish what the new location looks like before focusing on the car once more as the next shot, of the wheel trim displaying the Ford logo, is shown. The next sequence of shots are all showing off the impressive manoeuvres that can be performed by the car. In consecutive shots we see the close ups of specific actions or features of the car. In a quick succession of 6 shots we see the car parked, a gear change moving into reverse, (here we look back through the rear window and see tyre tracks made by the car in the dust on the ground of the building site). This then fades out to a shot of the steering wheel just as the text changes and then the shot changes to an exterior shot of the back of the car. After this, there is a close up of the woman in the drivers seat, she is smiling (and so is obviously happy to be driving the car) followed by a shot of her feel on the pedals. The final shot of the car is one of the wheels.

Next we have an exterior shot of the car facing the drivers side as the woman looks up, gets out of the car and leans on the roof still looking upwards. Following this we have a shot of a from the ground of an aeroplane flying overhead.

Hard Rock

In this poem, the author describes a beaten up, black man who was supposedly crazy. In the first verse, right away, we know that "Hard Rock was known not to take no shit/ From anybody." Along with a vivid description of him, shows that Hard Rock is a tough and fearless man. This poem is being told by the prisoners who are anticipating his arrival back. Hard Rock had gone away from prison and was sent to some kind of hospital. The prisoners waited for him to return. "And we all waited and watched, like Indians at a corral/ To see if the WORD was true." The "WORD" is the thought amongst the prisoners that Hard Rock will no longer be a mean man. As they waited, they recollected some of his crazy stories of fighting.

At the end of the poem, the prisoners finally testes Hard Rock by yelling a racist comment but Hard Rock did nothing but grin. He really didnt have anyains. The people realized this and seemed to feel ashamed and at the same time, disappointed on because all along, they looked up to his fearlessness, but they also never really knew the person he was.

This poem is written in free verse. There is no rhyming scheme and it doesnt seem to have a meter of either. Its basically a poem of somebody telling this story. The sounds of the words create the most emphasis in this poem, especially in his description "Split purple lips, lumped ears…" and "…thick/ canopy of kinky hair." The repeated "I" and "k" sound really give you an idea of his rough and beaten up appearance. A few similes were used such as, "He was turned loose/ Like a freshly gelded stallion," which seemed to create a better picture of what Hard Rock was like when he returned. After what seems like a harsh poem through the whole beginning, the mood changes in the last verse. "The fears of years, like a biting whip, / Had cut grooves too deeply across our backs." The words "biting whip" helps create emphasis of feel of hurt and pain of the prisoners.

The overwhelming conclusion from years of deterrence studies is that the death penalty is, at best, no more of a deterrent than a sentence of life in prison. States in America that use the death penalty generally do not have lower murder rates than states that do. When comparing nation murder rates, Canada, Americas neighbour with no death penalty has a lower rate than the American average.

The death penalty is not a deterrent because most people who commit murders either do not expect to be caught or do not carefully weigh the differences between a possible execution and life in prison before they act. There is no conclusive proof that the death penalty acts as a better deterrent than the threat of life imprisonment. Crimes that may call for capital punishment in a system that allow it will be sentenced to life in prison without parole in a system that do not allow the death penalty. Prisoners who are given this sentence will never be released. Thus, the safety of society can be assured without using the death penalty.

Many of the justice systems in the past emphasized on retribution as punishment for wrongs. The notion of eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth is nothing more than the grant for revenge. Our laws today should not be as savage as the ones our forefather and foremothers lived by. If we can have advancements in science, technology, racism, and about everything else anyone can imagine, then why not in our justice system too? We should teach each other and our children the complete respect for life, even the life of a murderer. Encouraging motives of revenge, which leads to another killing, only extends the chain of violence. Permitting premeditated murder is totally unacceptable, even if done by the government. Capital punishment lowers the value of human life as seen by the general population andutalizes society. Sometimes no competent lawyer is willing to accept the case because of the poor compensation paid. Poor people and of minority groups are more likely to be targeted because of prejudice. Many convicted murderers are later found innocent, and have been pardoned. It is impossible to pardon a corpse.

A literary theme is a central idea to a work, and is usually presented indirectly through

the elements of fiction. Themes are interpretive in nature; although an author may

introduce a theme into a work, the reader is allowed to experience a more personalized

Purchase your paper on Symbolism and Theme understanding of the theme. Symbolism is the use of a person, place or object which has a

meaning in itself but suggests other meanings as well. Things, characters and actions can

be symbols. Anything that suggests a meaning beyond the obvious may be used

symbolically. Symbolism in literature uses these similar objects and ideas to enhance the

understanding of the theme. Many short story writers use a combination of these

elements to further the readers understanding.

In Shirley Jacksons short story "The Lottery" symbolism is used to show passage of time

allowing the reader to grasp a long standing tradition of ignorance. The lottery is in fact a

yearly and highly celeated ritualistic murder. It is the stoning to death of a villager that

reveals a slip of paper with a black spot indicating the winner of the lottery. Jackson

sprinkles symbolic timelines throughout the story to emphasize that this murderous

tradition has been passed on for many generations. The slips of paper are collected in a

well worn black box barely capable of holding the contents due to generations of use.

"The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago and the black box now

resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in

town was born" (1). Jackson uses Old Man Warner to reveal that this tradition has

been practiced long before he was born. When someone in the crowd mentions that

another village was talking of giving up the lottery Old Man Warner rebuts harshly.

"Pack of crazy fools. The next thing you know, theyll be wanting to go back to living in

caves" (). Jackson strengthens this timeline as she characterizes even the youngest

participants. "The children had stones already. And someone gave little Davy Hutchinson

a few pebbles" (5). The reader realizes the horror of this tradition and the guarantee

that it will continue for another generation as a young boy (Davy) takes part in the

stoning to death of his mother. Jackson uses the characters in the story to symbolically

represent how traditions may be followed blindly and the horrific consequences of

ignorance. She asks the reader to question a tradition, a ritual or a practice. Question its

value, its purpose and its humanity.
