Hard Rock

In this poem, the author describes a beaten up, black man who was supposedly crazy. In the first verse, right away, we know that "Hard Rock was known not to take no shit/ From anybody." Along with a vivid description of him, shows that Hard Rock is a tough and fearless man. This poem is being told by the prisoners who are anticipating his arrival back. Hard Rock had gone away from prison and was sent to some kind of hospital. The prisoners waited for him to return. "And we all waited and watched, like Indians at a corral/ To see if the WORD was true." The "WORD" is the thought amongst the prisoners that Hard Rock will no longer be a mean man. As they waited, they recollected some of his crazy stories of fighting.

At the end of the poem, the prisoners finally testes Hard Rock by yelling a racist comment but Hard Rock did nothing but grin. He really didnt have anyains. The people realized this and seemed to feel ashamed and at the same time, disappointed on because all along, they looked up to his fearlessness, but they also never really knew the person he was.

This poem is written in free verse. There is no rhyming scheme and it doesnt seem to have a meter of either. Its basically a poem of somebody telling this story. The sounds of the words create the most emphasis in this poem, especially in his description "Split purple lips, lumped ears…" and "…thick/ canopy of kinky hair." The repeated "I" and "k" sound really give you an idea of his rough and beaten up appearance. A few similes were used such as, "He was turned loose/ Like a freshly gelded stallion," which seemed to create a better picture of what Hard Rock was like when he returned. After what seems like a harsh poem through the whole beginning, the mood changes in the last verse. "The fears of years, like a biting whip, / Had cut grooves too deeply across our backs." The words "biting whip" helps create emphasis of feel of hurt and pain of the prisoners.
