In the advert the aim of the company is to advertise their product to asoad a target audience as possible. The main objective of this advert is to persuade the audience that they could change themselves for the better by buying the product. The advert is for the new Ford Focus, and in it a woman drives a man to the airport. As he leaves he proposes marriage and the woman uses the car to reject his offer.

As the advert starts, we have the establishing shot of the airport with the Ford Focus pulling up outside it. It is then a straight shot into the cars interior showing a man in the passenger seat text appears with this shot in small writing across the bottom of the screen displaying information such as "Leather interiors Alloy wheels" which may not be included in the dialogue of voice over.

Shot three, still inside the car, is of the woman in the drivers seat; it then switches to the passenger side as the man begins to get out of the car. As he gets out he turns back into the car and we have a shot of him looking in through the open door and he proposes marriage in an authoritative, assuming manner. (The actual line is "Oh, and youll marry me, right?" this is completely unromantic and is a statement rather than a question.) This remark is splitting the target audience but not excluding them (e.g. Both sexes are able to relate to what is being said) which would defeat the object of the advert. This is because the women in the audience would recognise the chauvinistic attitude displayed by the man and understand the indignation felt by the woman. The men however may well associate themselves with the position of the male. College papers on Detailed analysis of ford focus advert As the man leaves the car and walks into the airport with a smug confident air, background music starts ("This is a Mans World"). This implication of a sexual game between the man and the woman incites the interest of the viewers without focusing too much on the car itself.

In these first few moments of the advert we see that both the characters are well dressed, quite young and attractive, and also seem fairly successful too. This alerts the viewers interest and attracts theoad target audience at which it is aimed.

The following shot is inside the car and is of the woman in the drivers seat. The shocked look turns to an expression of amused confidence, and she pulls the car out of the airport. The text changes at this point to small print of how you can pay (per month etc). Next we get a close-up shot of her hand as she changes gear. This is included in order to show more of the cars interior and to display more of the cars features. We then have an exterior shot looking onto the car from the side. This is the first full shot of the cars exterior and it shows the car in good light and flattering camera angles it was used in order to establish the model to an extent where people will be able to recognise it.

The shot which follows is interior once more, looking from the passenger seat to the driver. The woman is looking confident, happy and somewhat pleased with herself. This turns into an exterior shot of the car turning off the road into a sort of building site, during this shot the text changes once more to show more information about finances. These small text captions are included because they contain information, which they have to provide legally. Any bigger however and the text would detract from the narrative of the advert. This information is also rather uninteresting. It is therefore as important as possible for Ford to keep this information as unobtrusive as possible.

Next we have a birds eye view of the building site, basically to establish what the new location looks like before focusing on the car once more as the next shot, of the wheel trim displaying the Ford logo, is shown. The next sequence of shots are all showing off the impressive manoeuvres that can be performed by the car. In consecutive shots we see the close ups of specific actions or features of the car. In a quick succession of 6 shots we see the car parked, a gear change moving into reverse, (here we look back through the rear window and see tyre tracks made by the car in the dust on the ground of the building site). This then fades out to a shot of the steering wheel just as the text changes and then the shot changes to an exterior shot of the back of the car. After this, there is a close up of the woman in the drivers seat, she is smiling (and so is obviously happy to be driving the car) followed by a shot of her feel on the pedals. The final shot of the car is one of the wheels.

Next we have an exterior shot of the car facing the drivers side as the woman looks up, gets out of the car and leans on the roof still looking upwards. Following this we have a shot of a from the ground of an aeroplane flying overhead.

Hard Rock

In this poem, the author describes a beaten up, black man who was supposedly crazy. In the first verse, right away, we know that "Hard Rock was known not to take no shit/ From anybody." Along with a vivid description of him, shows that Hard Rock is a tough and fearless man. This poem is being told by the prisoners who are anticipating his arrival back. Hard Rock had gone away from prison and was sent to some kind of hospital. The prisoners waited for him to return. "And we all waited and watched, like Indians at a corral/ To see if the WORD was true." The "WORD" is the thought amongst the prisoners that Hard Rock will no longer be a mean man. As they waited, they recollected some of his crazy stories of fighting.

At the end of the poem, the prisoners finally testes Hard Rock by yelling a racist comment but Hard Rock did nothing but grin. He really didnt have anyains. The people realized this and seemed to feel ashamed and at the same time, disappointed on because all along, they looked up to his fearlessness, but they also never really knew the person he was.

This poem is written in free verse. There is no rhyming scheme and it doesnt seem to have a meter of either. Its basically a poem of somebody telling this story. The sounds of the words create the most emphasis in this poem, especially in his description "Split purple lips, lumped ears…" and "…thick/ canopy of kinky hair." The repeated "I" and "k" sound really give you an idea of his rough and beaten up appearance. A few similes were used such as, "He was turned loose/ Like a freshly gelded stallion," which seemed to create a better picture of what Hard Rock was like when he returned. After what seems like a harsh poem through the whole beginning, the mood changes in the last verse. "The fears of years, like a biting whip, / Had cut grooves too deeply across our backs." The words "biting whip" helps create emphasis of feel of hurt and pain of the prisoners.

The overwhelming conclusion from years of deterrence studies is that the death penalty is, at best, no more of a deterrent than a sentence of life in prison. States in America that use the death penalty generally do not have lower murder rates than states that do. When comparing nation murder rates, Canada, Americas neighbour with no death penalty has a lower rate than the American average.

The death penalty is not a deterrent because most people who commit murders either do not expect to be caught or do not carefully weigh the differences between a possible execution and life in prison before they act. There is no conclusive proof that the death penalty acts as a better deterrent than the threat of life imprisonment. Crimes that may call for capital punishment in a system that allow it will be sentenced to life in prison without parole in a system that do not allow the death penalty. Prisoners who are given this sentence will never be released. Thus, the safety of society can be assured without using the death penalty.

Many of the justice systems in the past emphasized on retribution as punishment for wrongs. The notion of eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth is nothing more than the grant for revenge. Our laws today should not be as savage as the ones our forefather and foremothers lived by. If we can have advancements in science, technology, racism, and about everything else anyone can imagine, then why not in our justice system too? We should teach each other and our children the complete respect for life, even the life of a murderer. Encouraging motives of revenge, which leads to another killing, only extends the chain of violence. Permitting premeditated murder is totally unacceptable, even if done by the government. Capital punishment lowers the value of human life as seen by the general population andutalizes society. Sometimes no competent lawyer is willing to accept the case because of the poor compensation paid. Poor people and of minority groups are more likely to be targeted because of prejudice. Many convicted murderers are later found innocent, and have been pardoned. It is impossible to pardon a corpse.

A literary theme is a central idea to a work, and is usually presented indirectly through

the elements of fiction. Themes are interpretive in nature; although an author may

introduce a theme into a work, the reader is allowed to experience a more personalized

Purchase your paper on Symbolism and Theme understanding of the theme. Symbolism is the use of a person, place or object which has a

meaning in itself but suggests other meanings as well. Things, characters and actions can

be symbols. Anything that suggests a meaning beyond the obvious may be used

symbolically. Symbolism in literature uses these similar objects and ideas to enhance the

understanding of the theme. Many short story writers use a combination of these

elements to further the readers understanding.

In Shirley Jacksons short story "The Lottery" symbolism is used to show passage of time

allowing the reader to grasp a long standing tradition of ignorance. The lottery is in fact a

yearly and highly celeated ritualistic murder. It is the stoning to death of a villager that

reveals a slip of paper with a black spot indicating the winner of the lottery. Jackson

sprinkles symbolic timelines throughout the story to emphasize that this murderous

tradition has been passed on for many generations. The slips of paper are collected in a

well worn black box barely capable of holding the contents due to generations of use.

"The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago and the black box now

resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in

town was born" (1). Jackson uses Old Man Warner to reveal that this tradition has

been practiced long before he was born. When someone in the crowd mentions that

another village was talking of giving up the lottery Old Man Warner rebuts harshly.

"Pack of crazy fools. The next thing you know, theyll be wanting to go back to living in

caves" (). Jackson strengthens this timeline as she characterizes even the youngest

participants. "The children had stones already. And someone gave little Davy Hutchinson

a few pebbles" (5). The reader realizes the horror of this tradition and the guarantee

that it will continue for another generation as a young boy (Davy) takes part in the

stoning to death of his mother. Jackson uses the characters in the story to symbolically

represent how traditions may be followed blindly and the horrific consequences of

ignorance. She asks the reader to question a tradition, a ritual or a practice. Question its

value, its purpose and its humanity.

In 18 the aero and space market in the United Kingdom was estimated to be £1.6 billion, contributing over ten percent of the UK manufacturing gross domestic product and two percent of the entire GDP. The bulk of the industry lies in military sales, which amounts to almost half of the product sales of the aviation market. Military sales have helped companies likeitish Aerospace (BAE) systems, and Rolls Royce become amongst the UKs largest exporters. The aerospace industry has remained strong in difficult periods through the nineties when there were large defence cutbacks and civil airline cancellations. However, it has been the technical excellence and market positioning that has allowed companies like Rolls Royce to widen the capacity of sales, through associations and relationships with traditional rivals and gained entry into new global markets. This has resulted in the UK industry gaining many domestic and foreign contracts for civil and military defence sales.

For the purpose of this project the definition of the aerospace industry is focused on and includes the sale of aircraft components, parts and engines, refurbishment work, and all after market services. The refurbishments and after market services are often included in company turnover because they are considered future cash flows. It excludes the systems that support avionics such as air and ground controls, their electronics and the electrical systems on board aircrafts.

Rolls Royce has positioned itself as the worlds second largest aircraft maker, closely behind General Electric (GE), but no less a technological leader in the aerospace, marine, and energy sectors of the industry. Throughout recent years the company has built aoader base growing through acquisitions and the expansion of its ample product range. Success has been attributed to the ability to accurately recognize the requirements of world markets and provide outstanding customer and product life support.

The Rolls Royce aerospace business makes gas turbine engines for both military and commercial aircraft worldwide. These customers include armed forces, commercial airlines and corporations who use jets, helicopters, and other aircraft. Rolls Royce is one of the largest makers of marine propulsion systems and both constructs and installs power generation systems, but what many of us know Rolls Royce for are its luxury automobiles. These engines were used in a number of historically important flights and in 11 the Rolls Royce engines set records for speed on land, in air, and by sea. The finest line of automobile today came through the acquisition of the Bentley Company in 1. It continued to produce engines that powered the fighters of the Second World War. LAPD chief wants more in-the-field activity from detectives, who make up 0% of police work force yet account for only % of arrests.

By Andrew Blankstein and Richard Winton

Online writing services offer help on Desk Jockeys to Crime Fighters Fictional police detective Sgt. Joe Friday roamed Los Angeles streets at all hours of the day and night, an aggressive, hard-boiled investigator who stopped at nothing to solve crimes and arrest bad guys.

In the real Los Angeles Police Department, detectives make up 0% of the work force, but accounted for less than % of arrests last year, according to department officials.

LAPD Chief William J.atton, an unabashed fan of the original television series Dragnet, wants to change all that, and more.

Since he took office five months ago, atton said he has been surprised to find many police divisions have one or two overnight detectives, despite the fact that most violent crime occurs between 10 p.m. Friday and a.m. Monday.

atton found detectives who spent more time during the day behind an office desk than on the streets.

I was amazed that its daytime and there are 50 or 60 people jammed in a room, he said. I just didnt get the sense that there was a lot of in-the-field activity.

Many LAPD detectives do not contact victims until days after the crime. Many do not see suspects until well after an arrest, and are likely to be in the office before the morning commute and out ahead of the afternoon rush hour.

The result, atton said, is a force dependent on patrol officers to make arrests and solve crimes. And if that is the case, he said, were in trouble for the fact that black and whites had almost no time to deal with crime. Were constantly dealing with 11 calls.

atton is laying the groundwork for a major overhaul of the detective squads. By the time the makeover is complete, he expects detectives to be slapping cuffs on suspects, intensively covering nights and weekends, and taking part in all interrogations.

Departmentass has not addressed those issues for many years because they had stopped asking the key question -- why? -- said Cmdr. James McMurray, a former detective heading up an internal review of detective deployment.

Its a great question, McMurray said. And eventually, after youve done it the same way after years, you stop asking that question.

The review has concluded that the LAPDs 1,500 detectives are overly specialized, isolated from the rest of the department, and often not concentrated where crime happens, said Patrick Harnett, a consultant studying the issue.

A former high-ranking New York City police official and veteran detective, Harnett said that the LAPD also has turned many of its investigators into glorified paper pushers, who review files to make things easier for prosecutors but leave the crime fighting to others.

The job of detectives has shifted away from searching for people who have not been arrested yet, Harnett said.

He said most cases dont require the expertise of detectives, whose prime objective should be to go after the predator kind of cases, where a suspect continues to commit crimes until they are forced to stop.

Police union President Bob Baker saidattons reforms are overdue and achievable under the current union contract, even if it means putting more detectives on night and weekend duty.

But he worries that chronic personnel shortages will adversely effect those plans.

Theres a real simple issue here, Baker said. Theres 7 detectives in each division, and when you factor in vacation and days off, you end up with about 1 to . So, when you look at their workload and start looking to move bodies to nights, something has got to give.

Mike Thrasher, a supervisor who oversees homicide and gang investigations in the LAPDs Hollywood Division, said his detectives work daytime hours because thats when criminalists and prosecutors are on the job.

This is not an LAPD problem, Thrasher said. This is a California justice system problem.

Shifting more investigations to uniformed patrol officers could also be problematic, he said, because it could take officers off the streets as they build a case. McMurray said the concerns are valid, and he is exploring ways to reduce paperwork and streamline the handoff of cases to prosecutors.

The ultimate result of the changes, atton said, will be to give detectives a larger role in the department.

Part of the problem, McMurray said, is that since the 170s, the department separated the detectives from the rest of the command structure, which inhibited movement in the ranks.

The result is that few top-ranking officials have detective experience, and there is nobody to champion their cause.

Thats whyatton said he will name a deputy chief in charge of detectives in the coming weeks, the first time such a position has existed at the LAPD in decades.

Detectives in this department dont have the same stature, atton said. In New York, they would kill you to get the gold badge.

The deployment issues wont be settled completely until after the Compstat crime-tracking system --attons major innovation -- comes on line later this month.

The staffing had better be where the crime is,atton said.
