Beggars Opera Theme

In my opinion, the theme in Beggars Opera seems to be operating on self-interest. As the old saying goes, what doesnt kill you makes you stronger, is basically the position that most of the characters take on.

One of the most prominent examples of this is with Macheath. He portrayed a prime minister of the times on one hand and on the other he was a masterful thief who was occasionally caught but always managed a skillful escape. On page 58, Gay shows that Macheath is acting for the "gangs" self interest when he says, "Business cannot go on without him. He is a man who knows the world, and is a necessary agent to us…" Gay also shows other characters that convey this theme through this method. Peachum being the next most prominent character speaks this way many times as if he knows no other way. A few of these examples are listed on pages 575, 578 and 581. "…Besides, here the law allows us no reward; there is nothing to be got by the death of a womanexcept our wives." "…how shall we be safe? Are we not then in her husbands power?" "And Macheath may hang his father and mother-in-law, in hope to get into their daughters fortune." Mrs. Peachum also shows this self-interest. "…hes [Bob Booty] a favorite customer of mine. Twas he made me a present of this ring." (576). On page 581 she says, "Then all the hopes of our family are gone forever and ever!"Sweet innocent Polly even gets to utter words deemed full of self-interest. Just after Mr. and Mrs. Peachum declare their self-interest on page 581, Pollyeaks in with "…But, I love him." Again she does this on 584, " But I love him, Sir how then could I have thoughts of parting with him?" Even a character with so few lines such as Matt is seeded with this theme on page 588. "…I know about this time there will be passengers upon the Western Road, who are worth speaking with." Another prime example is Lockit on page 56 when he makes sure the contract is directly split between him and Peachum. Vixen is quoted as a theme spreader too. On 5, "…as we were all assisting, we ought all to share alike."

These are just a sampling Gays theme of self-interest. There are far more to inference. These are just the most direct in relaying self-interest in the theme

The system has two main features

- The hierarchy of goals

- The dual responsibility of management

The hierarchy of goals is a system to formulate tactics according to corporate objective which is the fundamental goals of the entire company. Corporate objective is a long term goal. Besides this goal, TI also set a profit target to be achieved in the current year. However, sometimes the way to maximize current profit may hinder long term strategic implementation. In order to compromise the trade off between short term and long term goals, the managers are assigned dual responsibility. These managers have full responsibilities to think strategically how to achieve current profit target in a way that would not jeopardize long term achievement. Cheap research paper on Texas Instruments Inc This OST planning system is backed up by four other components (pic) Resource Allocation System, organizational structure, organization culture and Incentive Compensation system.

Resource Allocation System

The system separates the budgets for operating expenses from the one for OST implementation expenses (ie, R&D expenses, venture). In the OST budget system, the projects are ranked according to their importance (ie, how big is the possible profit). In Operating funds, the system adapts a zero based budget system, a system which required a manager to start from the scratch from each year in identifying the funds necessary for current operation and justify their need. This system aims to ensure the resources are being used as efficiently as possible due to limitation.

James Clayton was discharged from the "Farm" because he let his emotions take over when an abduction was simulated on him while he was still at the "Farm". After he was discharged, Clayton was approached by Walter Burke and offered an assignment with the CIA. Burke explains to Clayton that he was not really discharged from the CIA. Instead, he was made a Non Official Cover Operative and his assignment was to spy on a fellow CIA agent Layla Moore. Moore was also training at the "Farm" during Claytons stay there. Clayton had a romantic interest in her, so when he was abducted, and his abductors threaten to harm Layla, he completely went out of control and was released from his training.

. Burke tells James Clayton that the CIA believes that Layla is a mole, and she is stealing information from Langley. Claytons mission is to find out how she is transporting stolen information from there and he she was working for. He has to get as close to Layla as he can while work at Langley as a data analyst. Burke told Clayton that he had already been paired with Layla ever since they were still at the "Farm" together. They both are orphans; Layla was adopted by her foster parents, and James father had been missing ever since he was a young boy. Burke tells James that this similarity willing him closer to Layla.

James become romantic friends with Layla. He tries to log onto her computer when she was away for lunch and nearly escapes getting caught. He successfully logs onto Laylas computer at her home when he spends the night at her house. This is when he really believes that Layla Moore is a mole. Layla then starts to notice that Clayton is acting very suspicious. In response, she plants a small bug on his pants. Finally he discovers who she is working for by following her to the subway station. When he followed her there, he sees her hand off the stolen information to a man. Clayton follows the man, and it turned into a dangerous chase that leads from tunnel to tunnel. Eventually he catches up with the mystery man, and they fight. This is when James realizes that the man is Zack, a fellow trainee from the "Farm". As the two men were wrestling each other for the gun, James accidentally shoots Zack, and he dies instantly. The police discover the murder, and they pursue James; his CIA training paid off, and he escapes without incident. After he leaves the subway station, he meets Burke and tells him what he saw, and Burke gave him the option of quitting his mission then and there. Instead of opting out, James pleads for Burke to let him stay on the mission. James waits on the side of the freeway for Layla to drive by after work. She finally drives by him, and he follows her and forces her to pull over. When she tries to escape, it turns into a high speed chase which ended with Clayton hitting Moores car, and she loses control of it. He demanded for her to give him the information she stole. She tells him that it is her assignment with the CIA to steal that information. The CIA wanted to test how easily information could be smuggled out of Langley. Of course he does not believe her and takes the information chip from underneath her coffee mug and leaves to confront Burke.

Burke tries to persuade Clayton that all of what just had happened was a simulation, but James did not buy it. He refuses to give Burke the chip; as a result, Burkes comes after Clayton, and the chase leads into an abandoned warehouse. Eventually, CIA agents arrive at the warehouse looking for James. Burke thinks that they are after him, so he tells them the whole story about his betrayal to the CIA. He realizes that he just blew his cover and makes a ditch effort and tries to shoot the agents. Before he could even fire a shot, the CIA agents take him down. Layla Moore was telling the truth after all, and James Clayton had been conned into working for a traitor of the CIA.

I believe that some of the training procedures that were practiced at the "Farm" are plausible. For example, the combat training where they try to knock each other down to the ground was very believable. It did not seem like something bizarre that the CIA would not do. Learning how to defend yourself is a very important aspect of becoming a CIA agent. Being an agent can be a very dangerous job, so all CIA agents should have knowledge of self-defense. It is just common sense that these CIA trainees take self-defense courses. I think that the simulation of bugging a home is not as believable because it just seems a little too fictional and Hollywood to me. It is something the film industry created to captivate the audiences attention and imagination. What seemed kind of weird to me was that the trainees had so much freedom within the "Farm". Take for instance, the scene where Layla gets bored one night and goes and practices her shooting skills. I do not think that she would have the ability to do that if she were at a real CIA training camp. What I also cannot believe was the scene where Walter Burke and some other agents view the recruits playing poker from a different room. I believe that in reality, there are surveillance cameras around the camp, but the agents do not monitor and observe the trainees like they did in The Recruit. Overall, only half of the techniques used at the "Farm" by the CIA agents are believable to me.

I definitely do not think that the mission "Pick up a girl. Actually, five girls" would really be used by the CIA in reality because it is irrelevant to their training. I do not understand how having the ability to pick up five girls would help them become good agents. It just seems to me that this scene was used to glamorize the idea of being a CIA recruit. That is something James Bond would do. Very well I might add.

The kidnapping and torture ordeal was just too far fetched for me to believe. I do not think that the CIA would do such a thing to their trainees. It is tooutal and seemed very fictional. Personally, I think that scene was created to fulfill the movie-going audiences craving for violence. On the other hand, maybe I am just naïve. Maybe the CIA really uses this tactic to see how well the trainees can handle physical pressure. Maybe this is a way for them to weed out the physically and mentally weak.

I do not believe that the CIA actually goes out looking for recruits and indiscreetly approach civilians asking them to apply for the CIA. What I think happens in reality is that people apply for a position in the CIA, and there are no recruiters for the CIA. They will waste too much time and effort if they thoroughly research and pursue candidates as they did in The Recruit. They probably already have too many people applying to become agents as is, so the act of going out in public and recruiting someone is needless. The scene where Walter Burke approaches James Clayton is completely fictional to me. That was a stereotypical scene of spy movies.`

The written examinations were plausible because just like applying for a regular job, many times job candidates have to be tested for their skills and knowledge. The CIA cannot afford to hire dumb people to work for them. If they do, then America is doomed. The candidates have to be tested for their intelligence. Although, I do not think that it was just their intelligence that was being tested in the examination during the movie. I would think that they would be tested for logic and mechanical skills. Most likely, a portion of the test would be reserved for the testing of their observation skills and method. After all, the objective of a CIA agent is to gather information. I do not think that the real CIA would have put up with James smart-ass responses because he obviously is wasting their time. If he really wanted to get a position in the CIA, then he would have been sincere and serious. Even if he did very well on the written part of the examination, I do not think the panel of interviewers would have let him stay for long once they get a taste of his personality. The last thing they want is an insubordinate agent.

I really think that the CIA agents would be trained how to lie on polygraph tests, but not recruits. The test just measures your heart rate, so if you stay calm during the test, you can lie without getting caught. In other words, I do believe that a person can lie during a lie detector test and not be detected, but I do not think that the recruits would be trained how to defeat the test because it is too early to train them to do that type of thing.

I think that Rapid Eye Movement test really exists, but I do not think that a person can be trained to fool that test. that test detects the dilation of the subjects pupil, and I do not think that anybody is capable of controlling the dilation of their pupil without the help of drugs.

I do not think that the technology today has advanced enough for the creation of a transceiver that decays and disappears in forty-eight hours. I think that that was an example of a fictional gadget used to make the job of a CIA agent appears "cool".

The stars on the plaque inside the CIA headquarter at Langley are not believable because I do not think that there are any reason to replace the agents names with stars. Those people died for a heroic cause and the CIA would have wanted to honor and distinguish them in a way where people recognize their names. I think that the stars were just the movie producers attempt to mystify the audience, and make them question whether one of the stars could belong to James Claytons father.

I believe that the post-farm plot could not have happened in real life. The Central Intelligence Agency is just too careful and secure for a man, such as Walter Burke, to solely create a fake job for a fake agent and then employ him at Langley. I do not think it is possible for an agent to do that type of thing within the CIA.

What is Eden?

The Eden Alternative has the potential of remaking the experience of aging and disability across the whole world.

It is a powerful tool for improving quality of life. To make this happen, we need, to teach others about what Eden is and how they can use it to transform the communities in which they work. Cheap essay writing services offer help on Australia's Federation We are dedicated to helping others create, enlivening environments and the elimination of the plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, and Boredom. We are dedicated to helping people grow.

I believe that our facility is a homelike environment. Through Eden Alternative, we must teach ourselves to see the environments as habitats for human beings rather than facilities for the frail and elderly. We must learn what Mother nature has to teach us about the creation of viant, vigorous habitats like environment

Eden shows us the companion animals and the meaningful care to other living creatures, and the variety and spontaneity that mark an enlivened environment can succeed where pills and therapies fail.

Our goal is to help people weave together the philosophy of Eden with the real world of daily practice.

"Think of this as a Tree"

First we need to warm the soil.

"Eden Tree"

There are 10 principles and from the 10 principles think of ways to help warm the soil. Place these discussions on the tree.

Activity Planting the Seed (Vision)

# Principle 1 Acknowledging the Plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness, Boredom.

Exercise Imagine yourself as a nursing home staff member. Your Administrator has invited you to dinner away from the facility.

One person in the group should be chosen to play the role of the Administrator. He/She hosts the discussion by beginning with an Elder Story.

--

The seeds of Eden are planted in peoples hearts. It is with our hears, rather than our eyes, that we see what is essential in the world.

The Host begins by telling Elder stories about an Elder who has made a difference in his/her life. The stories should be drawn from personal lives rather than from work.

Every member in the group tells an Elder Story. At the end of the Elder stories, the host declares that the purpose of the Eden is to protect our Elders from the ravages of the plagues. The group is invited to reflect on the impact that Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom have on the Elders of our society. The question is then put to the group.

"Shall we commit ourselves to ending the Plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom?

There maybe an open discussion on this. After the discussion, each staff should receive a paper ballot. Printed on the ballot is the question and one check boxes for "Agree" and "Disagree". Place a ballot box on a nearby table and tell the staff to deposit their votes in the box provided.

At the end of session, open the box and count the ballots. If all the members agree then you are in consensus on the principle. Your hearts are all open to attempting this work and you can proceed.

"Warming the Soil"

We should always begin by warming the soil. It is like the organizations, they range from warm and life-giving to cold and sterile. Cold organizations feel cold and suppress the human spirit.

When pessimism, mistrust, deceit and stinginess dominate them. A bit like Prisons for e.g., these organizations contain and punish convicted criminals effectively and consistently but no-one would say they were warm. Organizations that care for the elderly should be different. They have a special challenge of achieving operational efficiency and loving warmth simultaneously. Warm organizations can function more effectively then cold organizations.

Activity

Question How can you give unexpectedly?

Choose someone today from your organization. Call on him/her and give honest praise. Or look to do a good deed anonymously. Plan your action, and if possible, carry it out while here during the session. Warm your organization.

Warm people cannot tolerate cold organizations. So, on the other hand, cold people favour cold organizations and those organizations tend to promote cold people into leadership positions.

Question So what about warm organizations you ask?

--

Warm organizations favour warm leaders. Many of us do good deeds that are unexpected, special and help others grow as human beings. We all want the light of the world to shine on our good works, and given ½ the chance, we will make sure that people know just how good we are. There are ways of minimising this.

1. Whenever possible, good deeds should be done anonymously.

. If the good deed cannot be done anonymously, it should be done person to person, not position to position.

If we ant to live in a caring world, we must be caring. If we want to find love in our daily lives, we must give love. I know that the climb out will be a long and hard one. We will make the climb together, or, not at all.

Helplessness and Boredom

"Tending the Garden"

At this stage we have accepted the task of combating the Plagues. So now, we are ready to reach out to the Elders, staff members and family members that make up our world.

It is important that people see that the leadership is active and involved in the process and not just palming it off.

First step is to identify and define the Plagues.

The definition of Loneliness is "the pain we feel when we want but cannot have companionship".

Discuss and talk about the definition of Loneliness.

Distinguish between solitude, which is finding pleasure in being alone, and loneliness which is always painful.

Question Does Loneliness stalk our Elders?

The definition of Helplessness is "the pain we feel when we always receive care and never give care".

Question Does Helplessness stalk our elders?

The definition of Boredom is "the pain we feel when our lives lack variety and spontaneity".

We need to be aware that entertainment is at best, a temporary fix for boredom.

BUT real relief comes from a life filled with variety and spontaneity. A boring life that is punctuated by entertainment still leaves people restless and dissatisfied.

Question Does boredom stalk our elders?
