Odysseus life is very similar to the lives of many teenagers in many ways. Many teenagers have to make tough decisions, and so did Odysseus. I have to make many choices about things during my life, and Odysseus had to make many tough choices during his journey. With the exception of Greeces independence from the Ottoman Empire (180) and Belgiums independence from the Netherlands (181), the majority of rebellions were quickly put-down for example, in 181 and 1846 Russia stopped Polands attempts for self-determination. Hungary, Germany, and Italy also rose up against Austria in 1848, and although, at the time, their efforts failed to achieve liberty or constitutional reforms, the global impact of these events - bolstered by the philosophical writings of men such as, Georg Hegel (1770-181) - served to firmly establish the political status of nationalist beliefs. Gradually, collaboration between some traditionalist politicians and liberal reformers began to address socio-economic and imperial issues, and as the struggle for autonomy continued over the next three decades (1848-1878), Italy, Germany, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, and Montenegro were given self-rule . This was a period of massive political and socio-cultural changes mainly because the growth and re-organisation of political ideals and institutions led to the decline of the worlds traditional social and political orders, and, as the principles of nationalism spread throughout Europe so too did increasing racial intolerance (xenophobia).

At the same time, Austrias authority was in decline, and the Ottoman Empire, (which had been established in the 1th century) had decayed to such an extent that it became known as the sick man of Europe . Italy, and in particular, Germany, began to adopt a more aggressive stance in relation to imperialism , which created hostilities with the existing colonial nations. To secure existing and future domestic/foreign interests,itain and France responded to this threat with an increased zeal for rearmament . In The Great Illusion (10), Norman Angell states that


"… the fundamental motives that explain the present rivalry of armaments in Europe …. are based on the universal assumption that a nation, in order to find outlets for expanding population and increasing industry, is necessarily pushed to territorial expansion and the exercise of political force against others; that nations being competing units, advantage in the last resort, goes to the possessor of preponderant military force, the weaker going to the wall, as in other forms of the struggle for life."


The volatility of this period was caused by two specific factors, the successful growth of some countries and the decline of others. For instance, post-1815 the main powers had agreed to support the Ottoman Empire whose decline began with the invasion of Egypt (178) during the Napoleonic Wars because if any one country managed to gain territory within this vast nation the balance of power would be unfavourably situated out with their control network. Despite such formidable backing, the Ottoman reign continued toeak down, with the loss of territory in the Russo-Turkish War (1875-1878) when Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria were released from Ottoman control causing major problems. In 1887, Italy,itain, and Austria tried to curtail further advances by France and Russia into the Turkish Empire, however, it took a decade for an agreement to be reached and it only lasted for 11 years. Although the Congress of Berlin (1878) made provisions for Austria to have governmental control of Bosnia, it was still officially part of the Ottoman Empire, so when Austria decided to take control of Bosnia in 108 an international crisis erupted.


War between Austria and Russia was averted after Germany offered her support to the former, however, any diplomatic relationships involving Austria and Russia were now defunct. The conflict between Russia and Austria simmered for three years during which, aggressive Austrian expansionist policies increased in the Balkans, and Russia retaliated by encouraging the ethnic and political activities of pan-slavist movements, and generating stronger ties with Serbia and Bulgaria. In 111, there was an infringement on Turkish soil by Italian forces occupying Libya and between 11-11 a Russian-backed Balkan League consisting of Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Montenegro managed to seriously undermine Austrian authority.


The main reason why events took hold so quickly in 114 was the increasingly hostile relationship between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Another kind of lie Holden uses is fooling with peoples minds. When Holden gets on the train to New York City, he sits next to a woman whose son goes to Pencey. They talked extensively about Pencey and her sons involvement with the school. He tells her, "He adapts himself very well to things. He really does. I mean he really knows how to adapt himself."(Page 55) Holden also says, "Well, a bunch of us wanted Ernie to be president of the class. I mean he was the unanimous choice. I mean he was the only boy that could really handle the job."(Page 57) While saying all of this to Ernies mother, Holden was saying in his head, "Her son was doubtless the biggest bastard that ever went to Pencey, in the whole crumby history of the school. He was always going around snapping his soggy old wet towel at peoples asses. Thats exactly the kind of a guy he was."(Page 54) What he said to the mother were all lies that made the mother feel proud of her son, until she realizes the truth. These lies are entertainment for Holden. By the end of the conversation, Holden feels bad for lying, but he still enjoys fooling with peoples minds. Another kind of lie is when Holden tells lies just because he is too lazy to tell the truth. On the train, Ernies mother asked Holden why his nose was bleeding. Instead of telling the truth he said, "I got hit with a snowball, one of those very icy ones."(Page 56) He lied about this because he did not feel like telling her what really happened. "It wouldve taken too long," (page 56) he said. One could give him credit because he had a pretty sharp answer about why his nose was bleeding, which was convincing.


Holden has not done any real harm to the people he has lied to. He teases people with his lies but never really hurts them physical or mentally. Holden tricks the girl in the nightclub about seeing Gary Copper. She never knew out that Gary Copper really didnt appear in the nightclub. This never made her look bad in front of her friends or upset her. This shows that Holden never hurts people with his lies.


For Holden it would be great by the end of the book if he at least tried to minimize the amount of lies he tells to people. He should find a way of expressing himself without fooling with peoples mind as much as he does. The only way that Holden will ever realize that lying doesnt amount to anything good is when a lie comes back to him. If Ernies mother and Holden ever discussed Holdens lies, he might realize the effect of his lies on others. Maybe he would stop and think next time before he told another lie.

Accordingly, Aristotle rejected the notion that the Good exists independently of daily experience and human personality. In his view moral principles exist in the daily activities of human life and can be discovered by examining those activities.


Happiness, for Aristotle, is to be attained by developing ones potential for a life of reason. The life of reason has two aims the pursuit of truth through reflection and understanding and the pursuit of virtue through intelligent conduct. Virtue represented a midpoint between extremes of excess and defect. Some actions, however like murder or theft, he saw as bad in themselves and therefore having no midpoint.


Aristotle rejects three common conceptions of happiness, pleasure, honor, and wealth. Happiness, for Aristotle, cannot be identified with any of these things, even if all three are part of an overall happy life. Pleasure is found in satisfying desires, but whether or not we can satisfy our desires is as much up to chance as it is up to us. If human happiness were nothing more than pleasure, then the attainment of the chief human end would not be up to us. We would be "slaves to our desires."


Aristotle also rejects the idea that the life of honor, the life of being publicly recognized and revered, is the happy life. Again, he points out that whether or not we are honored is not up to us. This view of happiness would put the attainment of our chief end in life into the hands of others. Furthermore, we do not seek honor purely for its own sake, we also seek it as a measure of our worth. But happiness is sought for its own sake.


Aristotle sees wealth as merely useful, it is not sought for itself but for what it can be used to achieve. Wealth is a mean for something else, a rich person who works hard to accumulate wealth is not in search of just money, but does it to eventually obtain happiness.


Aristotle as an attempt to find out our highest good views ethics as the end, which he maintains, is really final. Though many ends of life are only means to further ends, our aspirations and desires must have some final object or pursuit. This end is called happiness.


Aristotle believes that human beings have three parts to their psychologies, what he calls three "souls" the vegetative soul (that unconscious part that takes care of autonomic functions such as digestion and circulation), the animal soul (that conscious part that feels emotions, desires, and appetites), and the rational soul (that part that thinks, evaluates, judges, forms beliefs, etc.). Of these, the animal and rational souls may both exhibit excellent rationality. The rational soul may be rational in itself, and the animal soul may be subject to reason�that is, ruled by reason. When the rational soul is doing its job well, it attains wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.


The habits of thought and intellectual skills that help it to do this job are called intellectual virtues. These are the virtues that are acquired through the kind of training one receives in school. But someone can have great "book smarts" and still be very irrational in how they conduct their lives they are led by irrational desires, uncontrolled emotions, etc. Their animal soul is not subject to the guidance of reason. Such a person lacks what Aristotle calls moral virtue.


Aristotles Doctrine of Mean relies on the reasoning that for every emotion, every desire or appetite, every behavioral disposition, there is a corresponding moral virtue, as well as moral vices. Virtues and vices are states of character. According to Aristotle, emotions and desires have purposes with respect to the whole person, but they fulfill these purposes only if they are felt at the right time, in the right way, to the right degree.


How you are conditioned to feel and respond to life situations is your character. This "right amount" of an emotion or desire is said to be the mean between the extremes of excess and deficiency. Thus, for every feeling you have, you can be virtuous (if your character is such that you feel it in the appropriate way), or you can exhibit the vice of excess (too much of the feeling) or the vice of deficiency (too little). For example, with respect to anger there is the vice of short-temperedness (excess), the vice of insensibility (deficiency) and the virtue of even-temperedness. There is also a golden mean with respect to the disposition to perform certain kinds of actions. For example, the generous person has the virtue of being disposed to give away money in a fitting way, neither too much nor too little. Our rational soul, when it is operating effectively, can tell through experience what is fitting�but until our feeling and dispositions are aligned with what reason dictates, we are not excellently rational.


Aristotles Doctrine of Mean and view of choice provides a link between ethics and effective leadership. As an example, if a decision is made in either extreme, excess (abuse of power) or deficiently (incompetent) will affect and overrun others with corrupt or inept individuals. All choices affect an out come, and every action has a consequence, the choice lies on the individual. According to Aristotle, choice implies a rational principle and thought. Choice is concerned with the means to the end, not the end itself.


Most moral virtues are to be understood as falling at the mean between to vices. Aristotles doctrine is represented in the following manner.

Consequently, if a leader is presented with a dilemma, leans toward the mean of that particular virtue, he or she then makes the right choice. Leadership often involves ambiguity, which requires strong decision-making skills. Leadership also involves the means of courage, temperance, patience, truthfulness, modesty, and proper ambition. If a leader pursues the mean, he or she is employing moral goodness. Therefore, the choices a leader makes affects not only him self or her self but also the perceptions of the leaders followers.
