September 5, 00 Humanistic education is made up of loosely related assumptions and techniques. The movement emerged as a reaction against prevailing approaches in education. It happened during a time in American history when there was dissatisfaction with many aspects of our society as well as a distrust of authority. The view stressed that humans control much of their own behavior, and parents and teachers should allow freedom for children to explore and develop. This view was proposed by three eminent psychologists Aaham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Arthur Combs.


In the humanistic approach to learning, teachers are encouraged to create a classroom environment that address students needs and helps them develop a positive attitude about themselves and others. The non-cognitive values of emotions, values and self-perception are stressed. Techniques used in teaching this approach are the use of role-playing, values clarification and abolishing the traditional grading system.


Teachers are encouraged to allow students to make choices and to manage their own learning. It is also important to establish a warm and positive atmosphere in the classroom. The teacher should also serve as a facilitator and helper and use object lessons in the classroom as well as setting a good example for her or his students.


I believe that there are many ways that I could facilitate the humanistic approach in my classroom. One way is to collaborate with students in designing classroom rules at the beginning of the year. Another possibility is for students to give suggestions on various topics they would like to research either as an individual or in a group.


As a teacher I believe it is important to make the students feel valuable and cared for. Being able to call a student by his or her name is an important way to build a relationship. One way to learn students names quickly would be to take pictures of each student at the beginning of the year as a quick referral point. Greeting each student at the door at the beginning of the period with a smile and positive comment helps build a positive relationship with students. Letting students know your office hours at school if they need to talk to you about a situation can also be helpful. Giving a variety of choices to do for a project lets students help with decision- making. Placing a suggestion box in the classroom for ideas or concerns without students signing their name can create a safe and caring environment.


In the local school that I have worked with, the chorus participates in a number of civic activities such as singing at care facilities or at the hospital Christmas party. I believe these activities help students become sensitive to the needs of others as well as becoming a role model for other students.


I know there are other ways that I can encourage the humanistic approach in my classroom. By doing so, I will instill some of the best values my students will need as they become valuable assets to society.

The police emptied the satchel in which Anne kept her diaries, notebooks and photographs so they could use it to carry away food and valuables. Auguste van Pels died somewhere in or near Theresienstadt. Anne and Margo were sent to Bergen-Belsen camp, where in March 145, they died of typhus and starvation. Anne was just short of her 16th birthday. Of the group, Otto Frank was the only survivor. He was freed when the Russians liberated Auschwitz in January 145.


When Otto Frank returned to Amsterdam after the war, Miep Gies gave him Annes diaries and exercise books. When he knew that Anne was dead he began copying whole sections out of the diaries to send to other surviving family and friends. Since parts of the diary had been rewritten and revised by Anne herself, he edited the text also, omitting parts he deemed too personal to be included in a document to be read by others. Those who read the excerpts recognized the value of such a document and urged him to seek a publisher. The manuscript was corrected and edited by several people in addition to Otto Frank. Several publishers rejected the manuscript before it was at last accepted in 147 by a Dutch publisher who printed only a small number of copies. The edition was well received and in 150, there was a German and a French edition. In 15, an edition of the diaries was published in the United States where it was received with great acclaim. A dramatic version of the story of Annes ordeal was presented on the stage. Anne Franks diary is a testament to her keen powers of observation and the growth of her maturity and insight. It has had an emotional impact on all who have read it. The diary makes us aware of what it is like to live each day in fear of being ripped from ones home and loved ones, the fear of losing ones very life only because of having been born a Jew in a land and at a time when barbaric Nazi ideology ruled.

The reasons, such as suspension of colonial legislatures, impressment of American sailors and the importation of mercenaries (Jefferson, ), given for the dissolution of the political connections that the American anditish people have held for over 100 years all relate to the Kings tyrannical tendencies and the peoples right to choose a different government. The edict also states that although petitions of grievances were issued, the King turned a deaf ear.


The Declaration of the Rights of Man is not only built on the social contract, but also on Rousseaus idea of general will of the people. He defines the general will as being, Sacred and absolute, reflecting the common interests of the people, who have displaced the monarch as the holder of the sovereign powers. (McKay, 581) Passing and enforcing arbitrary laws are considered to be an act of tyranny and a substantial reason, according to Rousseau, to declare the current government void and establish a new one. Article VII clearly states that arbitrary laws and orders cannot exist.(Sherman, 100) The fact that this is distinctly stated implies that arbitrary laws were being passed and enforced under Louis XVI. Article VI states that law is the expression of the general will every citizen has the right to participate personally or through his represenative.... (Sherman, 100)


Lockes ideas of natural rights, the rights of human beings to the pursuit of life, liberty, and property (McKay, 54), is clearly stated in both declarations. In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson used the exact words in the preamble - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness - in which he uses happiness to mean property.(1) He also cites examples of the arbitrary suspension of liberties by George III such as the right to peaceably assemble, taxation without the consent of the colonists, maintenance of a peacetime standing army, and the right to a trial by jury.(1-) A reference to natural rights also appear in the preamble of the Declaration of the Rights of Man. Rousseaus idea of a social contract, Lockes natural rights, and Montesquieus idea of the courts being the defenders of liberties all came into play when the two documents were written, and in being written, the culmination of the Enlightened thinkers came to their peak.

Goebbels aims of propaganda were to make others believe Hitler was the saviour of Germany. Their aims was to make German people accept Hitler and to approve of Nazism.

Goebbels also controlled the newspapers. He knew that Nazism would create a lot of controversy so he kept a close eye on it to be certain that no anti-nazi ideas were being printed. But as there were Jewish editors and journalists they became unemployed.


The Nazis didnt want anyone opposing the Nazis so soon all the anti-nazi papers were prohibited from being published


The cinema films had to portray a positive message about Nazism and contained messages from Hitler at the beginning of films


Posters covered walls giving a positive image of Hitler and criticized the Jews


Goebbels wanted every household to have a radio because they repeated speeches by Hitler as if to force them to accept Hitler


Goebbels banned jazz music because it was associated with black people and they were considered to be inferior. The Olympics was to show that the Aryan race were superior. They made the stadium look modernised so that they could show that Germany was modern, civilised and a successful country.


The visitors were amazed at their faiclities of the stadium. Also at the beginning they the Germans were leading perhaps making people think that the Aryan race was superior. However the winners were mostly black people and many people did not like the blatant propaganda so people did not like it.


Women


The Nazis considered women as only mothers and wives. A newspaper headline once read No true German woman wears trousers. This showed that they preferred men to be dominating.


Women were encouraged to have children by getting a gold cross for having 8 children and gained a privileged seat in Nazi meetings. Propaganda was also used to promote motherhood


The birth rate did increase 15 per 1000 and then increased to 0 per 1000 in 1. The plans to tempt women into having children had been successful as the birth rate increased

This gave employment for over a million men. However this did need money for uniform, weapons etc. So coal mines and factories gave more opportunities for workers. And then more people were needed as engineers, designers and fitters for constructing for the air force.


Law and Order


The police force in Nazi Germany had changed for the benefit of the Nazis. The high status jobs in the police force were given to high ranking Nazis. This then enabled them to report of what was happening to Himmler who was head of Germanys police. This meant that they had more power and were able to do things that normal civilians couldnt. They were also under strict instructions to ignore any crimes that were committed by Nazi agents.


The law courts in Nazi Germany were controlled by the Nazis, as well as the judges and the magistrates. This allowed Nazi agents to be excused for any crimes committed and were unfair to any opponents of Nazism.


Reinhard Heydrich was in charge of the Gestapo. The Gestapos main aim was to reduce opponents of Nazism and to get rid of anyone who didnt like or approve of Hitler. They had power to send anyone to concentration camps on suspicion without reason.


Himmler who was head of Germanys police was also in charge of the SS. The SS men who were very loyal to Hitler had a main responsibility of destroying opposition to the Nazis. They also had units who were in charge of the concentration camps and it was their duty to get rid of the Jews.


The very first concentration camps were set up in Poland December 8th 1 as soon as Hitler came to power. They had used old factories or warehouses in isolated rural areas.

The concentration camps were so called because in them were concentrated Jews, Communists and enemies of the Nazis.


Hitler continued to incite hatred of the Jews, launching Anti-Semitic campaigns on the radio, in films, in newspapers, magazines, and posters. He enacted laws against Jews, segregated Jewish school children, and deprived Jews of their jobs and property.


Otto and Edith Frank knew that as long as the Nazis were in power, life for Jews in Germany would become more and more dangerous. They feared that their normal life could not continue. They decided to move to the Netherlands where Otto had an offer to start a new company. Otto went to Amsterdam in 1 to find a new home for his family and start up the business. Anne, Margo and Edith went to live temporarily with Ediths mother in Aachen, near the German border with Holland. In the autumn of 1, the family was reunited in their new home in Amsterdam. Anne was four years old. In Amsterdam, Anne and her sister had a busy and happy life, quickly learning Dutch, attending the local Montessori school, and making many new friends. They wereight girls and were encouraged by their parents to study and learn whatever subjects interested them. Otto Frank prospered in his new business, which made pectin, a fruit extract used in making jams and jellies. He watched the developments in Germany with growing anxiety and began to take further steps to protect his family.


In May 140 the Nazis invaded Holland and soon began to place limits on the economic and social freedom the citizens had enjoyed. Jews had to register with the authorities so the Germans knew the names and addresses of every Jew in Holland. Jewish children were forced to attend only Jewish schools. Everybody was issued identity cards. Those issued to the Jews were stamped with a J and they were often stopped by the police and made to show the I.D. card. Jews were required to hand over their bicycles and barred from riding trolleys or using cars. Jews were set apart from other citizens and association between Jews and Gentiles was forbidden.


Aware that his company was in danger of being taken from him by the Nazis, Otto Frank transferred ownership to Gentile co-workers and began to make plans to go into hiding. He prepared a set of secret rooms behind his office and warehouse at 6 Prinsengracht. He furnished it simply and began to stock it with food and supplies for the day when he and his family might be forced to use it.


In 14 Jews in Holland were required to wear yellow stars made of cloth attached to their outer clothing. This meant that they could be instantly recognized as Jews. In June of the same year the Nazi leaders announced that all Jews were to be transported to labor camps in Germany. Otto knew that this was the time for him to disappear with his family. Wearing many layers of clothing, instead of carrying suitcases or bundles that would attract attention in the street, the Frank family left their home and set up house in the secret rooms he had prepared. The rooms where they hid became known as the secret annex or the house behind.


In June, on her thirteenth birthday, Anne received a diary that she took with her into hiding. The diary became more and more important to her as time passed because she had no contact with the outside world, no friends except her family and three family acquaintances who went into hiding with them, Hermann, Auguste and Peter van Pels. Anne wrote inside the front cover of her diary I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope that you will be a great source of comfort and support. She gave her diary the name Kitty. It became her closest friend and confidant during her time in hiding. In it, she wrote about her restricted activities, tensions with her mother and sister, worries about the safety of her Jewish friends outside, her fear of discovery, her longing for independence and freedom, and her dreams for the future. She also shared with Kitty reports of Nazi persecution and confided the growing awareness of herself as a sexual, moral, political and philosophical being. She felt a strong conviction that she wanted to become a writer.


After hearing aoadcast from London in which the education minister of the Dutch government in exile urged his fellow citizens to keep accounts of what they were experiencing under German occupation, Anne decided to revise her diary for publication after the war. She rewrote and polished the style of her diary, fictionalizing names and weaving it all together in a more readable form. While in hiding she also wrote several short stories.
