HM 01 Billy J Billingsley

Billy Budd is one of three forces of good and evil in this book, probably more good than evil. Billy is a young man who seems to have everything going for him. "Giving no cause of offense to anybody, he was always alert at a call"(168). He is big, strong, handsome, and he has a personality and charisma that draws everyone to him. Everywhere he went he charmed people, gaining the respect of those around him, especially Captain Vere. When Captain Vere made reference to Billy it was always good and positive. "Ay Lieutenant you are going to take away the jewel of em; you are going to take away my peacemaker"(15). Not only is Billy a well-liked person, he is also a very accomplished sailor. After short arrival to his ship, he is placed in the position of foretop man. This is a crewman assigned to the top of the foremast. This position was given to the best of the best and Billy definitely fit the bill.

The crew liked Billy so much that they even did his laundry, sewing and the ships carpenter was making a chester drawer for him. "Though our handsome sailor has as much of masculine beauty as one can expect anywhere to see; nevertheless, like the beautiful woman in one of Hawthornes minor tales, there was just one thing amiss in him. No visible blemish indeed, as with the lady; no, but an occasional liability to vocal defect"(157). Billy stuttered when he was frightened or nervous. Now being compared to a woman leaves me to think that Billy might have been playing another roll on this ship as well. You would think Billy a very passive man up to now but when approached by the ships bully, Billy did not hesitate to defend himself by taking down the bully with one blow to the ribs. By defending himself Billy gained, even more so, the respect and admiration of the ships crew. Not only did Billy take down the ships bully with one blow, he also took another mans life with the same blow but to the forehead. This man was Claggart, an officer on the ship and who disliked Billy. During a hearing with Captain Vere and Claggart, Billy is accused of conspiring to mutiny. When Billy cannot speak because of his stuttering, he becomes so frustrated that he struck Claggart on the forehead and killed him with one blow. By committing this crime Billy was tried by a Military Court Marshall, found guilty and hung. In the comparison as Billy as a Christ figure in this book, I have to disagree. Lets look at the facts. Here you have a very handsome young man who is liked and respected by almost everyone. He works hard at his job at being a sailor, a friend and a leader among his peers. Billy believes in peace when it is practical but does not hesitate to fight when it is called for. He even threatens to throw a shipmate overboard which would mean his certain death. He also kills a man with his bare hands. From what I know about our Lord, Jesus Christ, he would not of had lifted a finger to harm a soul. He would of turned the and gave his adversaries the other cheek to strike.

Not every one on the ship liked Billy. There were a few that despised his good looks, charisma and leadership qualities. One of them was the Master at Arms John Claggart. He was an Officer on the ship. He is portrayed in this book as the villain and even compared with the Devil himself, which is a fair assumption given his deeds throughout the book. Claggart is jealous of Billys good looks. Even though Billy makes every effort to gain Claggarts favor, other crewmembersewed up rumors that Billy dislikes Claggart and vise versa.

Claggart started his Naval career late in life. As a matter of fact, he had to join the Navy or go to jail. Which tells you that Claggart did not have the moral or gentleman like qualities of a real Naval Officer. It is evident in the beginning that Claggart hides his contempt for Billy well by smiling and saying kind words to him as they pass on ship. The ill feelings that Claggart has for Billy is compounded when other crew members tell him that Billy is talking behind his back. This is confirmed in Claggarts mind when Billy accidentally spills a bowl of soup as Claggarts passes by him. Claggarts hides his contempt well by saying, "handsomely done my lad! And handsome is as handsome did it, too! (170)."

After this, Claggart set off to make Billys life on board very harsh. One evening, one of Claggarts henchmen called Billy out to the deck to talk to him. Billy could not make out the face of his caller but when he pulled out two gold coins and spoke of helping out in a pinch, Billy got nervous. He started to stutter and demand what he was talking about. Well, as I said earlier, Billy threatened to throw this individual overboard. With this evidence of a possible mutiny, Claggart went to Captain Vere and presented him this evidence that Billy is a dangerous person and wants to organize a mutiny. By doing this, Claggart would put a damper on Billys naval career and his standing with the crew of the ship and especially Captain Vere. This would make Claggart very happy.

As with the comparison as Claggart as the Devil, I would disagree as well. I do agree that he was a very bad individual but Satan he is not. I do think that when Billy struck down Claggart with one blow it did remind me of the biblical story David and Goliath.

Melville portraits Captain Vere as a dedicated Naval Officer who only permits obedience to duty and is very strict with discipline. When Billy smites Claggart down with one blow, Captain Vere is heartoken on the duties that he has to perform. "Struck down by an Angel of God! Yet the Angel must hang!"(188). After the incident happen right in front of his eyes. Captain Vere convenes a military court marshal, finds Billy guilty and sentences him to death.

As comparing Captain Vere to God is also receiving my disapproval. Being a commissioned officer in the Navy as well and the commander of his ship, Captain Vere had certain responsibilities to uphold and enforce regulations. Even though Claggart was trying to frame Billy, Captain Vere had no evidence of this; however, he did have solid evidence that Billy was a murderer. After all, Captain Vere witnessed the whole thing. He could do nothing but hold a military court marshal, find Billy guilty and punish him to full extent of the law and in those days it was at the end of a rope.

The major export was still coal, but wool and beef featured much more prominently than they do today. Alumina and aluminium were notable exports, but had only been so for a few years.

These observations reflect the trend of increasing mining exports and decreasing agricultural exports familiar to Australia in the last fifty years. This is a result of increased demand for mining commodities, and a drop in wool and beef prices.

In 18, the United Kingdom was still a major destination for Australian exports. Twenty years later, however, and Japan is the major buyer of Australian goods. This is due to the development of Japan and other Asian countries over the last few decades, and the lessening of Australias link with its parent country, England.

Japan is also a major importer into Australia currently, along with the US. Two decades ago, the UK was again the major trading partner of Australia, but again, the fading connection between England and Australia has led to the decline of Australian imports from England. The importing into Australia of manufactured goods has been a prominent one, and also was so in 18. However, the continuous developing of new technologies has seen a rise in the amount of electronic goods imported. In 18, the United Kingdom was still a major destination for Australian exports. Order your "Penny and Louise" paper at affordable prices! Kate Chopins "The Story of an Hour" is a riveting tale of repression. The story is quite clenching and the ending blooms with irony. Mrs. Louise Mallard is nothing short of a loving wife, however, when news of her husbandentlys death penetrates her heart, she is changed. Weeping violently in front of her sister, she escapes to her bedroom so she may allow the news to absorb. Like a sponge in placid water, she begins visualizing the reality of a life of her own. Allowing, for what seems like the first time, the true emotion that she has felt for many years to seep out of her pores. For Louise has always lived forently, she had loved him, but the sudden burst of self-assertion took over. Unsure of what bestow upon her, her body and soul were now free. Louise drank in his death not as an ending, but as her new beginning. The irony is overwhelming when Louise descends the staircase, regains her composure, only to see her husband walk in the door very much alive. To imagine what she felt is awe-inspiring, to have wept with secret joy that only she could know, only to have the reality of his existenceeak her heart. To know what she wanted so badly, now would never exist, was the driving force of the knife that pierced her heart and ended her life.

Louise clearly is a complex person. Her young, fair, calm face was merely a reflection of the strong will she would eventually find in herself. She had kept these feelings locked up for so long in a barbaric prison of her "Life", that once the emotion was free; it rampaged like an unleashed prisoner. "Free, free, free!" she whispered so delicately, as if the prisoner had found a clean escape. She did escape, in spite of the fact that it wasnt in the life she wanted, but in the death that was eminent.

Michelle Wynns "Boundaries" is a similar story with indecisive Penny lurking about unhappy and repressed. Penny created her own living hell, and eventually her world came burning down upon her. As she meets and eventually moves in with Bill, she is overwhelmed with the sense of significance, sufficiency and security that she feels. "Bills strength made Penny want to abandon herself to him" is valuable, for she let herself disappear like a train on a distant track. Penny became what Bill wanted; she was weak and lacked any sense of self. She was an unhappy woman in the choices she had made, for there was no evidence of her existence in Bills world. She was alone in her body and soul, controlled not by her emotion, but by the words of another.

A simple Penny, as if the smallest of coins, didnt stand a chance with dominant Bill. His needs and wants superceded her own. She had no strength to stand up and make a change; she didnt want to make waves. Her life with Bill was setup, one disappointment after another. Penny would cry inside, yet, display an emotionless face to the outside world. Resembling Louise, Penny began to resent Bill rather than love him. During her confrontation with herself, she began to realize how impersonal her life had become. She had no place in Bills house, with his furniture, his family pictures and his preferences on everything. Pennys things were hidden in the basement, as if they were second hand items from a rummage sale that just wouldnt "fit" in his house. Penny had suddenly realized all the small choices she had made had subtly repressed her life. Visualizing Penny, she seems frail and demure, with the ironclad fist of Bill constantly hammering down upon her. He was a control freak, and would continue to steer Penny, as if she were a ship lost at sea, straight into his controlling arms. To Penny, she had reached the point of no return. Her level of loss had been saturated with the unhappiness she had grown so accustomed to. For her to be free and feel again is for Bill to be nonexistent in the world which is her prison.

As she reaches to wipe the gloom away from her life, she trembles. Not from fear of what is to come, but from what has passed. Penny is capable of finding herself, even if it means picking up Bills 8 automatic and using it to end her torture. The kiss she blew him was the very bullet of her freedom. Ending her torture, paying her ransom and freeing her to live again.

These two remarkable women have endured the pain of a controlling "sense of self" thief. Unfortunately for them, they never stood a chance to gain back the most precious jewel of life, the ability to love and be loved. To salvage any significance was to realize the repression existed in their lives because they allowed it to; unfortunately, it drove both women to their death.

Analytic Essay 5/1/0

CRWT 40 Prof. Derek McKown

The Most Important Things in Life "Are friends. Best Friends."

College Essays on Fried Green Tomatoes

One of the main reasons that the novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf, by Fannie Flagg, has been one of my favorites is the underlying theme of the importance of friendship. In addition, the novel is written in such a different manner than other novels, with a wonderful sense of humor and excellent writing. The dialogue between Evelyn and Ninny is so easy and natural, that reading it is just like hearing Ninny converse with Evelyn. It is almost as if you are sitting in the visiting room of the Rose Terrace Nursing home, eavesdropping on a conversation.

Friendship crosses boundaries of age, race and personality. I have always felt that friendship is one of the most important things in the world. The friendships that are found in the novel, as well as the movie are unique and special in their own way. In addition to the theme of the importance of friendship is the idea of family. Family, is not limited to blood relation. The novel uses third person in telling the story of Evelyn and Ninny Threadgoode at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home in the late 180s and flashbacks in the form of "The Weems Weekly" (Whistle Stop, Alabamas Weekly Bulletin) and other "bulletin" type writing.

The point of view of the novel and the film are somewhat similar. The novel is told in third person narratives, flashbacks and jumps from the 180s with Evelyn Bates and Ninny Threadgoode telling the story of Ruth Jamison and Idgie Threadgoode in the 10s through the 160s. Evelyn is a woman dealing with finding her place in the world; she is unhappy with her marriage and is going through menopause. Evelyn and Ninny develop an unlikely friendship, since Ninny is an eighty-six year old woman in a nursing home, not the usual candidate for friendship for a woman in her fifties. The film is told with a rd person omniscient point of view, telling the story of Evelyn and Ninny. The flashbacks are told in the rd person point of view with Ninny being the narrator and knowing everything about Idgie and Ruth and their story. The film takes all the flashbacks and stories revolving around Whistle Stop, the Threadgoodes and Ruth and consolidates them into the memory of Ninny Threadgoode as she is telling them to Evelyn in her visits to the nursing home. The film really simplifies the book, and I feel that it takes something away from the uniqueness of the book. Upon watching the film again, I found that the film still provides an accurate representation of the theme and meaning of the book.

The plot of the novel and the film is fairly in sync. The novel goes into so much detail about the events surrounding Whistle Stop and goes into extensive detail about the family of the Threadgoodes and the family of Sipsey, Big George and even the homeless character Smokey. In the novel, these stories add validity to the stories that Ninny tells Evelyn. In addition, Ninny isnt as "all-knowing" about the incidents in Whistle Stop as she is in the movie. Since the author of the book, also wrote the screenplay, I suppose she did this to make the movie more accessible to the viewer. Including the vast amount of details revolving around Ruth, Idgie, Smokey Lonesome, Sipsey, Big George and their extended families in the film would have been a nearly impossible task and would have made the movie much longer than its 10 minutes.

The film has two timelines. It opens, we learn, in the 10s or 40s with Frank Bennetts truck being pulled out of the lake and then flashes forward to Evelyn and her husband, Ed going to visit Eds Aunt Vesta in the Rose Hills Nursing Home. (One minor change in the novel it is Eds mother that is in the nursing home Vesta Adcock is a minor character in the novel, completely unrelated to Evelyn and Ed). The film introduces us to Evelyn and Ninny and we find that Evelyn is, at first, reluctant to listen to this old woman ramble about her past. As the film progresses, the months go on, and the seasons change they go through Halloween, Christmas and Easter their relationship blossoms into a friendship. Evelyn has much to learn from Ninny about life and her place in the world. Evelyn also finds that the story of Idgie and Ruth are a much better reality than the life that she lives, dissatisfied with her husband and herself. The film weaves the two timelines together as Ninny tells the story to Evelyn.

Nucor had once been considered the fastest-growing steel company in America that was unstoppable. In the twenty-first century Nucor is being challenged by a changing industry where there is a worldwide decrease in demand for steel and steel related products, increasing competition, especially from foreign competitors, in a maturing market and environmental concerns about alleged violations of federal and state clean air rules.

In response Nucor¡¦s management has embarked on a growth strategy in the course of a shakeup of the management structure through the adding of outside directors to the board as well as a centralization of the organisation¡¦s procedures. Nucor hopes that this growth strategy will have a positive impact on the future profitability and help realize its goal of becoming the largest steel maker in the United States.

Porter¡¦s Five ForcesRivalry in the industry

The industry is not only fragmented but the boundaries of its various sub-parts are vague and overlapping. Steel products are marketed principally through in-house sales forces. The principal competitive factors are price and service.

The company is not the strongest, but it can defend itself from stronger rivals and capitalize on the vulnerabilities of weaker rivals. Nucor has better cost management skills than other U.S firms. Nucor consistently improves its technological capabilities. Nucor¡¦s employees are paid for performance, making them very productive.

Threats of Substitute

Nucor vs. integrated mills, other mini-mill, foreign mills, and specialty mills.

Nucor¡¦s success as a low-cost provider could not be accomplished without utilizing the cost reduction capabilities in every element of their value chain; this is the biggest difference between Nucor and its rivals.

Nucor¡¦s rivals, for the most part, still use traditional integrated steel mills, which inefficiently use a single large scale plant to perform all of the steel making functions.

Barriers to entry by Potential Competitor

Considerable competition exists from numerous domestic manufacturers and foreign imports. The markets that Nucor serves are tied to capital and durable goods spending and are affected by changes in economic conditions.

Global demand for steel expanded continuously throughout the 160s, a demand domestic producers elected to not meet, choosing only to match domestic consumption requirements. This presented an opportunity for up-start foreign producers to rejuvenate and strengthen themselves without directly competing against U.S. producers.

Antidumping Rulings U.S. integrated steel producers filed charges of dumping against foreign competitors -- primarily the Germans and Japanese.

Bargaining Power of Suppliers

The bargaining power of suppliers within such industry is low. The supply factors of production (transformation factors) are labor to operate plants, capital facilities, and land. Recent modernization has significantly substituted technology for labor in steel production. Yet, Not all stakeholders have been happy with the way Nucor does business. There were also concerns about the excess incentives the stat gave to convince Nucor to build steel mill and it also argues that their new federal law should go for extra care with the restoration of spawning and nursery habits and improve water system due to the fast track of facility being built in Hertford by Nucor.

Bargaining Power of Customers

The bargaining power of customers is medium to high because of a reduced demand by the auto industry as of the result of the lower steel content in a modern automobile; a trend steel producers are aggressively trying to counter by banding together to form the Steel Alliance which is running a $100 million advertising campaign targeted at consumers touting the advantages of steel for automobile design (and house construction).

Service centers are also playing an increased role in the industry, acting as major distributors and wholesalers for finished steel products to steel consumers (construction firms, shipbuilders, machine faicators, etc.). With the exception of the auto and auto part manufacturers (who contract directly with producers), most finished steel is delivered to end users is via the steel service center, moving some of the inventory management burden to the service centers for a marginal mark-up to the end user. This presents a forecasting complication to planners and strategists as all demand for steel is a derived demand, the forecaster must be able to look into the macro forces affecting an economy and project steels role in theoader economic system from which a consumer demand pattern could be ascertained.
