Among the defining affairs in my life, the most poignant is an ill history that has taken place overseas, boldly prompted to my eyes and beginning prior to my birth. It is this dire event, replete with poverty and ignorance, that fuels my ambitions for justice and equity. A sad story 6,10 miles away from the United States in a country unknown to the rest of the world still resonates within my being. Every day that passes this ghost grows further from the world as time separates it from the minds of so many others. However, each day the personal significance of this misfortune grows stronger. As I approach a pivotal point in my life, where ambitions can be realized, I feel the impact of this story stronger than ever before.

This story is the Dominican History. A history full of masacres, tyrannies, and constant violations towards society, a story that does not yet have a happy ending. Despite Dominicans suffering and hardship, these people sacrifice whatever they have in hope of justice and prosperity for future generations. Many immigrate illegally to Puerto Rico risking and many times losing there lives. Many leave their loved ones behind, and still more never return . My mother emigrated from the Dominican Republic to the United States more than twenty years ago due to the hard times. In flights imersed with fright and sadness from " El Aereopuerto Internacional de las Americas" to New York and later to Rhode Island she physically left her country. However, she carried with her those nights of hunger and tears. To this country sheought her hope, spirituality, gratitude for life and ambitions that are quintessential of the Dominican spirit. I have been blessed to inherit these bittersweet aspects of her character, which manifest in times of need. My mothers struggle has been inspirational and very influential to me. She is deeply scarred by these misfortunes. As her daughter I witness her psychological and physical scars, and, as her daughter I acquire my own.

Growing up a first generation American is a blessing. I am able to emace two cultures, two languages, and acquire an international perspective of the world. Even at a very early age, I expressed interest and pride in my Dominican heritage. I soon became a person dedicated to two flags, a citizen of two nations. However, some of the most affecting experiences that attribute to my passion and knowledge are those that are painful. The hardships were never truly left behind. I remember once in first grade she had gone to pick me up early from school. Some minor authorities starting questioning her, questions she did not know how to answer, questions she did not understand. I saw her sob and sob in desesperation, hands on face and cheeks wet from tears.Following her departure, my mother was faced with multiple cases of severe discrimination. I still have vivid memories of "neighborly" exchanges of words. Some entailed "Stupid spick" being screamed into my face., although I was born in America. Even more disturbing are the prolonged events that unraveled in school while teachers turned deaf ears.

I am driven by the knowledge that the direct experience of war far exceeds all the adversity I have encountered, and may confront. My father lost his sight, but many more children in the world lose their fathers. My family has experienced discrimination, however, it is not nearly as horrific as having your own people killed before your home. Year upon year my family receives pictures from Lebanon. One I will never forget is the image of my cousins enjoying a beautiful day outside. Their faces are full of smiles. All the while, a tank sits inconspicuously in the background. Their perseverance and undying spirit is so incredibly moving.

Online writing services offer help on my heritage --- Recently, my father shared with me a touching bit of information the day of my birth he had prayed that I would grow to help the people of Lebanon. I intend to.

Due to this painful moment in my familys history, my interest in the field of law flourished. By knowing and witnessing the suffering of inequity, a career in justice became of incredible importance to me.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is ailliant yet controversial novel in its times for its immoral views. Although the novel is a great one it has taken about a century for many to praise and accept this aspects of the novel. In 145 the making of the film was done and many watched for its taste in horror and immorality. Due to the fact of the time it was done the immoral of homosexuality is not present. However, like an every film, certain details are altered in the film, some making the film a failure and some insignificant. Yet, there are certain aspects of the novel that are still portrayed in the film.

It is quite evident from reading the novel that one of the most important symbols is the picture of Dorian Gray. It is the symbol of an evil soul and dirty conscience, however it is also the title itself. It is the bargain in which Dorian has sold his soul to the Devil. "If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old . . . I would give my soul for that" (1)! He makes a wish to trade places with the portrait in order to remain young forever, and the film has done a great job in emphasizing the importance of the portrait by illuminating it in color, while the film is in black and white. Not only does the picture stands out, but also it emphasizes what Dorian feels as he looks into the picture and realizes he is incredibly young and beautiful. It is in color, separating it from the black and white world, which portrays the picture as some higher power. This keeps the reader aware of the about the portraits importance in the film.

Considering that the voice of the author, which is detected with ease in a novel, cannot be detected in a film, the film does a great job in integrating some of Oscar Wildes important quotes into the film. The preface in the novel it a very important part that allows the reader to connect the authors thoughts with the message in the novel. "We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. All art is quite useless" (4). Nonetheless, in the film this is changed into a book of quotes and thoughts from Oscar Wilde that Dorian keeps in his den. Dorian finds these words to be inspirational, as he once reads them to his loved Sibyl allowing a rush of evil to take control over his body. Although they are words from the author, the words seem to have a dark meaning and a message that Sibyl finds rather strange. This allows the viewer of the film, to be introduced to the character of the author without having to read these quoted passages.

Purchase your paper on he Pictureof Dorian Gray In the film, the book of quotes mentioned earlier is seen on a table next to a black cat. Since the cat is not mentioned in the novel one cannot assume it does not belong in the film. The cat gives the film a dark and mysterious atmosphere that can be seen by the viewer. In the film Sibyl mentions that the cats eyes move as if they were alive, which gives the viewer an impression that the cat is a watcher. The black cat, universally known for bad luck watches Dorian and it is almost as if it is influencing him as it praises all his bad doings. After reading one of Oscar Wildes poems, Dorian seems to attain a dislike for Sibyl, while the cat just watches in evil motionless. The cat seems to serve as a symbol of the devil, and although this is not mentioned in the novel, it plays great importance in the film.

In the novel it is known the Sibyl Vane calls Dorian her price charming. This emphasizes that Dorians pretty face and charm are quite deceiving since the reader is aware of his evil soul. "You look more like a prince. I must call you Price Charming" (61). Sibyl is influenced by his charm into believing that he will save her and remove her from her poverty and misery. Although the name is altered in the film to Tristan, it still sends the message of Dorian as a strong and heroic character. Sadly, the viewer as well as the reader are aware that Dorian is no prince charming or tristan at all, and will only ruin the lives of many. Even though the name was changed the outside image given to Dorian is still being portrayed. His beauty and innocence serves as a symbol of bourgeois hypocrisy in both the film and the novel.

Considering the fact that it is almost impossible for a film to be as impacting as a novel, the film had some failures in portraying some important things from the novel. In the novel the reader discovers that Dorian has fallen in love with Sibyl after seeing her acting talent. He sees her plays Juliet in the play Romeo and Juliet, and continues to visit her. Afteragging to his friends, Basil and Lord Henry, about her great talent he takes them to one of her plays to show off her great artistic talent. "When I am with her, I regret all you have taught me" (87). She has done a horrible show and Dorian is extremely embarrassed as well as disappointed. As he walks to the back stage Sibyl states that she is tremendously happy to be in love and her acting was horrible because she is in love. She states that since she has found her true love she no longer has to feels the same devotion to her acting career. "Even if I could do it, it would be profanation for me to play at being in love. You have made me see that" (7). However, as for Dorian his disappointment allows him to turn this love he once felt into a great dislike. In contrast, the film shows Sibyl singing a song when Dorian first sees her and Dorians dislike for Sibyl arises more as an evil instinct rather than disappointment. This is a great folly in the film and although it was probably turned into a song instead of a play for the favor of the audience it has lost an important message. The fact that Sibyl plays Juliet in the novel is a way of foreshadowing her tragedy for a love in which she has committed suicide. This message is lost when the film turns it into some jolly song that is just fun to listen to. The other thing that is lost is the fact that we can see the obsession and superficial views that Dorian has with beauty. He is so wrapped around her great talent that when he sees something ugly on stage he cannot accept it. Lastly, the fact that Sibyl is a sign of innocence and purity is not as apparent on the film. The evidence is shown when she decides to make her love for Dorian her first priority over acting. She has given up her acting career, which is her last resort for money, for the man that she loves. Considering that more that one message was lost in the altering of this scene from novel to film, it is one of the great failures that the film possesses.

Another failure that the film possesses, is the immoral that is seen through the author, Oscar Wilde. His bisexuality was of course one thing that he was condemned for and although this thought is present in his novel it seems to be missing in his film. While reading the novel it is quite simple to detect the bisexuality relationships between men. " . . . I suddenly became conscience that someone was looking at me. I turned halfway round, and saw Dorian Gray for the first time. When our eyes met I felt that I was growing pale" (10). Although, it maying a feeling of disgust to the reader it is far too important to be ignored. In the first chapter of the novel, it seems as if Basil is in love with Dorians beauty from the moment he saw him. Many readers will look at this as something they rather ignore; however it reveals the authors character throughout the novel. However in the film, it looses this touch. In the film it seems more as a friend like relationship, rather than one of love. This may be due to the unethical views of the time however the failure to do so loses an important connection that Oscar Wilde with the novel. In order to read a book properly one must feel what the author is feeling and this feeling is improperly disregarded throughout the novel. It is transformed into a relationship that is preferred by the audience, however this is one of the important immoralities portrayed in the novel and the absence of it is a great fault.

The 145 film of The Picture of Dorian Gray, was a good success for its taste in horror and suspense. However, like in every novel turned into film, things were altered. Some being to better fit the film and others for the preference of the audience. However in trying to please an audience, the film failed to portray some important aspects of the film. The importance of the picture of Dorian Gray as well as the theme of evil is apparent in the film, making it a success. However, the taking away of the authors personality in the film as well as Sibyls acting scene, takes away in important aspect of the novel making the film a failure as well.

He was a Chancellor to Henry VIII; he refused to sanction Henrys divorce of Queen Catherine. More was then imprisoned, tried, and executed. This event was later made into a play, A Man of for All Seasons, although it is not historically accurate.

More coined the word, "utopia" which is a pun that means both "good place" and "no place" at the same time. Mores Utopia was discovered on a voyage to the newly discovered Americas. It was the first book to give an analogy between the great voyages of discovery to the discoveries of the mind. The book Utopia was based of the books of Plato, Laws and Republic. Mores government in Utopia was a communistic democracy, not an aristocracy with communism confined only to the high rulers.

Besides his books, other facts still impose. Sir Thomas More was born Feuary 7, 1478 in Milk Street, London. His dad was a lawyer at the time, but later would become a judge on the kings bench. In 141, after studying at St. Anthonys School in Threadneedle Street, Sir Thomas More was placed in the household of John Morton, Lord Chancellor to Henry VII and Archbishop of Canterbury. One years later, in 14, More enters Oxford and studies for two years. In 146, More was admitted to Licolns Inn, Oxford. In 147, he meets Erasmus, and they will become good friends. Among some other people he meets later are John Colet, Thomas Linacre, and others. All were humanists. In 14, more becomes a barrister after he completed his law studies at Oxford. In 1504, More becomes a member of Parliament. In 1505, More considers become a priest, but instead, he marries Jane Colt, saying he would rather become a good husband than a bad priest. In 150, More elected bencher at Lincolns Inn. In 1510, he was appointed under-sheriff of London. In 1511, Jane dies, leaving him with four children. He then marries Alice Middleton, a widow, a month later. In 1515, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Antwerp, and he begins to write Utopia. In 1518, he was made master of requests and a member of the privy council of Henry VIII. In 15, he is elected speaker of Parliament. In 15, More was made Lord Chancellor. In 15, he resigns chancellorship finding he cannot support Henrys attempts to divorce Queen Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn. In 15, he was forbidden to publish. In 154, on April 17, he was sent to the Tower Of London for refusing to take the oath of the Act of Succession. While in the Tower, More writes Dialogues of Comfort Against Tribulation and De Tristitia Christi. On July 1, 155 More was tried and convicted for treason on the terms of his refusal to affirm the kings supremacy. On July 6, 155, More was beheaded. On December , 1886, More was beatified and canonzied on May 1, 15 by Pope Pius XI.

Order your There are many different views on censorship paper at affordable prices! There are many different views on censorship, which have been discussed, debated, tried, and delegated against. Many of the reasons for the controversy that surrounds censorship have to do a great deal with censorship and its entirety. What should we censor, how should we censor it, when and to what age groups do we censor the material for, are all questions which cannot be ignored when the issue of censoring comes to play.

What should we censor, is probably the easiest question when it comes to this issue. Everyone seems to have an idea about what should be said, when it should be said, and just how we should say it. The best example would be the censorship of music. There is some lyrics in music which cannot, or should not, be heard by audiences under the age of 18. To accommodate this audience there is a "censored" version made and then distributed to the music stores. Now, does this stop the under age audience from listening to the restricted lyrics or better yet, is this type of censorship really enforced? From experience this is a type of censorship, which can be avoided by the younger audience.

If the very audience that we are censoring against can avoid censorship, then how should we censor certain material? This is a question that many censor critics have a problem with. It seems pointless to censor material if the material is still accessible to the very audience that it is censored against. Then comes the question, who makes the guidelines as far as the restricted audience is concerned. What is considered to be all right from one group may be completely out-landish to another. This is where the whole argument for censoring, in my opinion, goes out the window. These hard to answer questions along with the first amendment make the argument pointless.

When and to what age groups do we censor the material for? This question reiterates the point made earlier about who makes the guidelines as far as choosing the restricted audience. I agree that there are some things that a 7-year-old shouldnt be allowed to watch that are perfectly ok for a 13-year-old, hence movies that are rated PG and movies that are rated PG-13. In my opinion this is where censoring should stop. It should be the responsibility of the parents to "censor" what they feel is appropriate for their child; the decision should not be made for them.

In conclusion, the issue of censoring is a long drawn-out argument which can only get larger in years to come. There are new issues of should or shouldnt we censor the Internet which will probably go on forever. It is my opinion that the best censors are parents and or guardians. It is their responsibility to filter what they deem as inappropriate from their children, this responsibility should not be placed anywhere else.

Ive paid for sex. Ive traded expensive dinners for sex. Ive sprung for nights on the town for sex. Ive given gifts for sex. I even once wrote a term paper for sex (she got an A and I had a fine time, so Id call that a fair exchange). But had I ever just coughed up cold hard cash for sex, I would have tripped over a legal line that violates the law in most U.S. jurisdictions. Its ridiculous that the U.S. regulates this victimless crime.

The reasons why prostitution remains illegal in so many places generally boils down to two arguments Prostitution sets the wrong tone for society, and it degrades the people who peddle the favors.

The first argument can be described as the conservative one, and it is held by folks who despise sex outside of marriage. They see commercial sex as a threat to the institution of marriage, which is supposed to be the backbone of society -- a conservative society, of course. The second argument is the liberal one, and is usually intended to apply only to women, not men, who solicit their favors on the open market.

Write a research paper on Prostitution

There are, of course, abuses in prostitution. Prohibitionists on the left wing "whoop and holler" about women being pressed into service as sexual slaves around the world, utalized, and exploited. Right-wingers, on the other hand, add to their moralistic arguments with public-health warnings about sexually transmitted diseases -- a stronger argument than the sanctity of marriage in the age of AIDS.

But, if anything, both of these arguments are stronger cases for legalization than against. An above-ground hooker is a worker in yet one more legal trade. Beating or abusing an above-ground hooker is much the same as kidnapping a man and forcing him to be a bank clerk or walking into a bar and punching a waitress the perpetrator can expect serious legal consequences. But, when the trade is illegal, its going to attract the same sort ofuisers who dominate all sectors of the underworld, and a hooker isnt likely to risk her freedom to call the cops on an abusive john orutal pimp.

Likewise, a legal prostitute, whether an employee or entrepreneur, is likely to have health coverage and a public profile that encourages healthy practices as a "competitive advantage." To maintain good health, a legal hooker is likely to have a greater willingness to visit doctors for regular checkups. Simply put, the difference between legal and illegal prostitution is the difference between the corner pharmacy and the corner drug dealer.

Prostitutes will argue that they are fully aware of what theyre doing and just want to be left alone to do their business and make a living face the ultimate insult. Theyre told that their first-hand experience automatically makes them victims who are unfit to judge their own experiences. That basically amounts to a bunch of self-appointed "elites" patting the hookers on the back and saying, there, there, we know your lives better than you do. Its also a way for people who claim to be defending the oppressed to ignore people who have first-hand knowledge of prostitution. Moralistic prohibitionists have no need of such a tactic, since they regard prostitutes as the definition of social evil.

So, in the eyes of the conservative prohibitionists, people who peddle sex for money are corrupters of societys morals; in the eyes of liberal prohibitionists, prostitutes (women prostitutes, anyway) who assert the right to exercise their trade are too ignorant to realize that theyre being abused and betraying their gender. Those two things are quite a burden to bear for folks who are just trading pleasure for rent money. Just thinking about it gets me all wound up. And I can think of just the thing to release the tension anybody need a term paper written?

Fear

We were speeding down the highway the roads were slick. When suddenly the car coming the opposite direction merged over into our lane. Soon after I felt the impact of the other car hitting us. During the impact I could feel my leg and arm shatter like a piece of glass. In a faint tone I heard the cop say I would be all right but my grandma might not survive. Soon as I heard this the thoughts of every time I had made her mad or upset with me flooded in my head like a dam bursting.

Suddenly I felt a violent shaking and I heard my mom telling me to wake up. When I finally gained my conscience then realized it was a nightmare and was not real. Later in the day my mom asked what kind of nightmare I had, and I told and she was in shock at what I had dreamed since I was only eight. Soon after that I went to stay with my grandma while my mom went to work.

Write a research paper on Fear

Later that day my grandma and me went to the store to by her some things she needed for her house. I put the grocers in her car and we set off to go to her house. We made it back to her house thats when we realized she had left her purse at the store so we went to get it. On the way there it started raining and the whole time all I could think about was my dream I had earlier that day. We made it to the store thankfully one of the cashiers had been kind enough to store it away for her. After we thanked the cashier we started heading home on the way I could hardly see a thing. Then I caught a glimpse of some headlights but some thing was wrong they were on my side of the road.

Suddenly all I could think about was my dream. Suddenly I felt the impact like we hit aick wall. Then I blacked out and when I awoke I had no clue were I was. Then I heard my mother voice then I felt some relief. Then I asked my mother were my grandma was and she was in the hospital along with me. Then fear struck me like a dragger in the heart.

I asked my mother if I could see her she said I could so we went to her room, and thats when I noticed my arm and leg were bothoken. When my mother opened the door I was so exited I walked diligently to her bed and gave her the biggest hug ever. Thankfully she escaped with only minor injuries I was so worried that I didnt even know how we wrecked until my mom told me. When she told me we where hit by a drunk driver I immediately made the decision not to drink and drive.
