Stir together flour,own sugar, orange zest, and nutmeg. She had a sense of security and knew that anything she needed would be given to her by the streets. The streets get another unexpected guest during Christmas. One night when Margaret is up in her room she opens her closet and sees a strange black man sitting there. She becomes hysterical and runs down the stairs in a panic. Sydney goes upstairs andings down the intruder everyone in the house is startled by his appearance and ready to call the police. Everyone except Valerian. He invites the intruder to sit down for a drink and this makes Margaret crazy. She runs up to her room and locks herself in her bedroom. Son is the cause of a lot of trouble and heings out the true side of the characters of this story. After dinner Son is invited to stay for the night in one of the guest rooms. This makes Sydney angry. He could not understand how Valerian could be so calm in such a situation but despite his anger Sydney does what he is told.

The next morning Son come into Jadines room, this is their first personal encounter. Jadine is absolutely repulsed by his looks but she is kind to him and they start to talk, the conversation takes a turn for the worse. After making an insulting comment about Jadine he grabs her, presses his body against hers, and starts to smell her. This makes Jadine feel dirty. She finallyeaks loose from his grasp and runs to tell Valerian. On her way to Valerian she stops and starts to think about whether she should go and tell or not. After much thought she decides not to, but also promises herself that she would try to avoid him to the best of her ability. That same day Valerian suggests that Son go to the main island with one of the workers to get some clothes and a hair cut. He comes back the next day and sees Jadine. At first she is amazed by his appearance she could not believe that he was the same guy who she encountered the privies day. Her amazement was not long lasting her memories of the day before quickly came back to her. Son apologized for his behavior but Jadine does not want to hear anything that he has to say. Son offers to take her on a picnic and she agrees against her better judgment.

On the picnic Jadine gets to know more about Son. How he got on the island where he came from and what life he left behind. Everything was going fine until Son started commenting on her feet he became almost obsessed with seeing them and then touching them. Shortly after Son touched her foot Jadine pulled it away and said that she was ready to leave the whole situation made her very uncomfortable. Even as Jadine walked back to the car she still felt Sons thumb print on the sole of her foot. Then came the Dinner. Christmas finally arrived and everyone sat down at the table for dinner even Sydney and Ondine. At first it was a little silent, then everything went crazy and everyones true feelings came out. Sydney revealed how he felt about Son staying in the house. Ondine and Margaret got into a huge argument that almostoke out into a fist fight. Ondine let out a big secret that she had been holding back for years. She told everyone that when Michael, the Streets son, was younger Margaret used to stick him with pins to see him cry or bleed. At that moment everyone just stopped. Margaret admitted to it. Sydney lead Ondine back to their room, Margaret left the dinning room and eventually Son and Jadine left . Valerian sat at the table alone. Sometime during the picnic and the dinner something happened with Jadine and Son. After they left the dinning room son walked Jadine to her room and the made plans to leave. Son was going to leave first and wait for Jadine in NYC Son agreed because he wanted to be with Jadine. Jadine was happy to go back to NY because she loved the place so much. Jadine and Son just wanted to be together. Jadine didnt dare tell her aunt about her plans to be with Son she knew that Ondine already had enough problems.

She also knew that Ondine would disapprove. Once Jadine met up with Son in NY they were instantly in each others arms. During the first few days everything is going fine but Jadine starts to bother Son about getting a job or going to school, she feels that she is doing all the work in the relationship. Son is not interested in doing either at that moment. He is not comfortable in NY and is trying to convince Jadine to go back to his hometown Eloe with him. After a lot of convincing Jadine finally agrees to go with him. Eloe is a small town in Florida with a few people and even less houses. Jadine is not use to this kind of atmosphere and is ready to leave the second she gets there. The one thing that makes the trip even worse is the fact that Sons family is very religious. Since Son and Jadine are not married, Jadine must stay at Sons aunts house. Jadine is in a little room with no windows and feels cramped. Jadine is glad when it is time to leave but son asks her to stay one more day she agrees unwillingly. The next day the same thing happens and Son asks Jadine to stay one more day this time she refuses and tells Son that she will go back to NY by herself. Son agrees to this and promises that he would be there in the next few days. More than a few days pass and Jadine doesnt even hear from Son. More than a week later Son shows up and Jadine is mad. This causes an argument which is quickly ended like all the others. In the days to follow the arguments increase and get worse. Jadine and Son argue about everything, money, Son going to school, living in NY. Ironically no matter how bad the argument it never lasted long and they always ended up in each others arms. On day the argument got so bad that Son held Jadine out the second story window by her arms.

A few minutes later when the police came to the door they thought that they had the wrong house. The apartment of loving couple that answered the door could not have been the same apartment where a man had a woman dangling out of the window. One day Jadine could not take it anymore. After a huge argument Son stormed out of the house and Jadine at that moment decided to leave and not look back. She realized that her relationship with Son was a big mistake. Jadine left NY and went back to LArbe de la Croix. She tells Ondine about her time with Son and she told Ondine that she knows that she was wrong and if Son was to come looking for her not to tell him where she went. Ondine readily agrees to do this. Jadine gets some stuff and leaves for Paris. Meanwhile, when Son returns to the apartment he is surprised not to see Jadine there. He sits and waits for her. He refuses to leave the house in fear that she might come back while he is gone. After about a week Son decides to go back to L Arbe de la Croix to see if she went there. When he reaches the main land he goes by the helper, Gideon, from Valerians house thatought him to town the first time. Son asks Gideon to take him to the small island but Gideon says that it is to late. Gideons wife on the other hand offers to take Son. Gideons wife is partly blind but she claims to know the sea well and Son takes her up on the offer. Gideons wife takes Son to a part of the island that Son never ventured to. It is dark and Son does not know where to go. Gideons wife says to trust her and just get out the boat and follow the path. The story ends there and we do not find out what becomes of Jadine or Son. Jadine and Son are a prime example of listening to your heart and not your mind. They rushed into their relationship and did not know enough about each other to make a reasonable decision. Jadine was trying to run from something and Son was not in love he was in lust. If they had taken the time to know each other better they might have realized that they were two different people. Jadine has a degree in art history but makes her money through modeling for elite magazines. She is quite wealthy her self but she believes that she is coming to the end of her career. Throughout the story Jadine is faced with both a desire for and a repulsion of her race.

Jadine coexists in her social-economical boundaries quite well. She bounces from the upper and lower class structure with in LArbe de la Croix to manipulate the situation to her best advantage. Though she was born into the black race she has over stepped her social status because of her exceptional beauty and her quick intellect. Therefore, she is accepted by the upper class as more of an equal and less of a servant. Which is why she sits at the dinner table with Valerian and Margaret while also sleeping on the top floor along with them. Yet Ondine and Sydney also accept her because she is a blood relative and is like their adopted daughter. Which is why it isnt uncommon for her to take her lunch in the kitchen with Sydney while Ondine cooks for the white couple. She has a very diverse role when it comes to relating to the people within the house. Although everyone is very aware of her race they surpass her color and focus more on her individuality more than her race.

Although, Jadine co-exists very well within the confines of the island, American society doesnt know how to view her. The white society acknowledges her beauty and her intellect bit still views her as middle class because of her race. She still can not overcome the color of her own skin, therefore, making it hard for her to relate to white people. On the other hand, black society views her as a race traitor because she doesnt give back to her cultural community. She doesnt know the hardships and struggle of being black and poor in America because she has always had the better (white) things in life. I jolted up from my reclined position on the couch and retrieved the two items to prepare a heaping bowl of cereal. I looked around and located the telephone and proceeded to answer the telecommunications device. On the other end of the phone was Leon, he wanted to know if I wanted to hang out with him later. We left my house in his Ford Ranger and traveled to the subdivision where he lived for the past four years. "We stopped a few houses" before his at Tracy Wolmers to discuss the plans for the night. Leon knocked on the door and Tracys youngerother answered the door and told us that Tracy has been down the street at Emilys for the past twenty minutes. I bid farewell to Dillyn as Leon and I meandered towards Emilys house.

On the way Leon started coaxing me into going up to Wal Mart to race the wheel chairs around the store. At first I was not to keen about the idea, because my stomach was not satisfied with the half a bowl of cereal and was begging me for more. I suggested to him that we stop at Waffle House on the way to get some grub, he nodded as a sign of approval. He thought that the guy might be her boyfriend and he got a little carried away in an argument and smacked her a few times. Leon continued that he could haveought her here to apologize for his actions. The girl in question returned from the restroom and took her seat back. I began to stare "deeply into her my gaze" almost going through her. She turned her head in my direction and our eyes met instead of cutting my line of vision away from hers. I simply smiled and waved to her and that sorrowful face changed to aoken smile.

The waitress came around not long after this and handed us our meals. My stomach was fully satisfied after devouring three cheese eggs that were also accompanied by three pieces of toast. Leon only ordered a coffee and sipped it quietly as he grinned to himself. I was in no mood to grin or look happy after my thoughts about the girl siting in front of me continued to wander more and more. Leon had to call my name several times before he could get my attention. He was trying to get me to pay my bill so we could go to Wal Mart. I paid then we left.

The Ranger pulled in to the parking lot at about three A.M. and advanced upon a parking spot. We got out of the car and headed towards the door. Leon stopped me to get me to walk in there like I had a bum leg while he went in pretending he had surgery on his lower mid section and wasnt suppose to walk all that much. I went in first and started to get on one of the electric wheel chairs when I heard someone shout in my direction. I could not distinguish what was said but by the tone i could tell it was negative. I pretended not to hear anything and hopped on the electric cart. As I did this I heard a rhythmic jingling get closer to me until it was right behind me. As I turned to see what or who it was I identified a small and frail looking old man that was employed by Wal Mart. He started to mumble with a southern twang and I just sat there starring at him like a deer stuck in headlights. He repeated himself clearer than last and I was able to distinguish that he was trying to find out why I was using a granny cart to get around. I explained to him that I sustained a severe chess injury during the championship game. The elderly man looked at me as if I had an abnormally large strand of mucus crawling out of the interior of my nose. He waved me on and let me know that he hopes my leg gets better.

I made my way to the electronic section of the store and was completing my third lap around the CD rack when I saw a glimpse of Leons head creeping towards me. When he finally came into full view, he had the goofiest look on his face. He stopped in front of me and cracked up laughing. He too had a granny cart and tried to tell me what happened up front with the same elderly man. Leon said when he got on the cart that an old man stood behind him trying to obstruct the path of the cart. The man according to Leon did not "speak right" and continued to say "weird mixed up things about not messing with wild chandeliers." Leon realized that the statement was actually a question about his handicap enabling him from walking. Leon explained to him that he caught himself on his velcro pants and was mentally scared for life. He later told me he shed a few tears which possibly was the key granting him access to the electric cart.

We started our races at about four o clock A.M. and continued them until about five. We took aeak over in the toy section of the store. I told Leon that I was being followed by the store manager and right as I said this Leon backed into a shelf piled high with about fifty to sixty buckets and shovel combos knocking every last one to the ground. Right after doing so the store manager came over to tell us it is time for us to escort ourselves out. We left the store and got into the Ford Ranger. Leon wanted to rest his eyes for a minute before we left. Immediately after closing our eyes we fell into an unpenetrable slumber.
