In this story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne a minister named Mr. Hooper wore a black veil one morning before his congregation and from that day forward he never removed it, not even on his death bed. Mr. Hooper never let anyone see his face for the rest of his life.

There was a very significant meaning behind the black veil. Mr. Hooper explained that he wore this veil for sorrow, for what sorrow is unknown. The veil may symbolize a secret sin, he is showing everyone that he has sinned and wants to show the world that hes not perfect. Also, the veil represents the secrecy of his life. Everybody wants to see his face, as if he is hiding something under that horrible black veil, as if he is a monster now. Mr. Hooper never tells anyone the reason behind him wearing the veil, he just hints at the reason here and there. It seems that Mr. Hooper may even have some pleasure out of people looking down on him, as if he was being punished for what he may have done.

Mr. Hoopers community is very disturbed by him wearing this veil. People in the neighborhood start to whisper about him and try to guess why he wears the veil. The people in the town would whisper and talk about Mr. Hooper every time he walked down the street. People in the church would snicker about the black veil that covered his face. Mr. Hooper had a reputation as a good preacher, but not as an energetic preacher. However when Mr. Hooper gave his sermon that morning about secret sin, wearing the black veil for the first time, everyone was moved, even the most innocent person in the room.
