CHARACTER SKETCH: JEM

Throughout the three-year span of To Kill a Mockingbird, the book shows the changes Jem goes through in a few years time. He contributes to the novel by showing his feeling towards the injustice and cruelty of human nature. Jem, Jeremy Finch, is ten years old when the book begins. As Scouts olderother, he is Scouts primary source of knowledge, and takes responsibility for her in most cases. Jem is smart and naïve, but he cannot really understand some things until Atticus (his father) tells him more about it by guiding him. Jem is the more thoughtful one of the Finch children. Sometimes moody, and sometimes kind, he is always that "olderother" the Scout. In the first part of the book, it was during the time of their youth that nothing really matters. Jem was kind of like a teacher to Scout. He would teach her what to do and what not to do. For example, when Scout found the first items in the knothole, Jem told her not to take them because it could be someones hiding place; if they were still there a couple of days later, it will be "finders-keepers." Later on in the first part, Scout asks Jem about though topics like justice and why people treat others differently. Jem would become rude because he himself didnt quite know the answers, and he is also trying to understand those topics as well, but finds that the answers werent easy.

Around the time of the trial, Jem turned twelve, and the times started becoming though on Jem. When Atticus requested to his children no to fight anyone (because of tough times), Jem was determined (as well as Scout) to obey Atticus request to avoid fighting, unlike Scout with her short temper. He let his anger build up inside him, until one day he couldnt take it anymore, so he took it out on Mrs. Duboses garden by destroying it. Jem matures as he struggles with the issues of racism and injustice. He tries to find out why this happens, but he cant think of why. At the time of the trial, his optimistic view of human nature becomes apparent. He believes that if Tom Robinson is found innocent, justice will be done. When this did not happen, his ideas of injustice and cruelty start maturing as he experienced the trial and the aftermath of it. He finds it difficult to deal with the aftermath of the trial, but Atticus helps him work through Jems disappointment. He just couldnt believe why they can put a colored person in jail for something he didnt do, and let the white people run everything.

Towards the end of the novel, Jem becomes calmer and more realized. After all that had happened, Jem had matured through it and starts understanding his world. He starts concerning himself with being a man. He wonders that if he cuts his hair and gives it a new start, he would look more like a man. Even Scout noticed his eyeows getting heavier, the slimness of his body, and that he was growing taller. Jem also became more responsible and protective of Scout and others as when he risked his life for saving Scouts in the attack of Bob Ewell. The outcome of the attack was better than leaving Jem for dead: Bob Ewell died, Jemoke his arm, and Scout turned out fine (Jem and her silly ham costume saved her). Jemsoken arm is always going to be a reminder of hisavery, but also a reminder of the injustice and cruelty of human nature.

I chose Jem for this character sketch because he stood out a lot form the book. What he witnessed at the time of the trail changed his life forever, and changed his views, too. His maturity growing throughout the time of the trial impacted me because he was so young when this was going on, and he was very eager to know all that was going on in the trial, and why. When the verdict read guilty, Scout had noticed that every time "guilty" was said, it seemed like Jems knuckled were getting whiter and whiter. It seems to me that Jem was hurt every time they said it, not understanding why Tom was guilty after all the evidence and testimonies were given. Afterwards, he started understanding things piece by piece, and the reasons why people are like they way they are. Harper Lee did an excellent job in making Jem different from all the other characters of the book. In conclusion, I would say that Jem didnt have a normal or bad childhood; I would say that he lived an unique one because its not everyday a child is let to experience and witness a world of human cruelty and injustice.
