In the play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, ick is detached, unemotional, and very hard to get along with. Maggie, his wife, has a hard time just trying to have a conversation with her husband. Ever sinceicks best friend, Skipper, died, he has been unhappy, detached from reality, terribly difficult to get along with, and he has turned into a drunk. Nothing can makeick happy; not his mother, father, other, or even wife. ick seems to be happiest when he sits around drinking and sulking over something no one can identify or understand. ick misses Skipper badly and blames what happened to him on himself.

One main reasonick is so bitter towards life is because he feels there are lies everywhere and it is not possible to get away from all the lies in his life. He thinks his wife cheated on him with his best friend (Skipper), everyone is lying about his fathers condition, he is blaming himself for his best friends death, and hisother and family are doing everything possible to ensure they get the family fortune after his father passes away. With all of this going in his life, he feels it is best to just be unemotional, to make himself detached from his family and from his entire life. He thinks that if he drinks himself into oblivion everyday of his life it will all go away or at least he will not have to deal with any of it.

Skipper was the reasonick started to act like this. While Skipper was alive, ick was happy and a fun and exciting person to be around. When Skipper passed away, it was likeick died right along with him. His love for life was gone and he wanted nothing to do with anyone. He married Maggie, but did not love her the way he should have. He did not work or do anything, all he did all day long was sit around and drink and play that night over and over again in his head. The night of Skippers phone call did not leave his mind. It was always there, except for when he drank so much he heard the click in his head and then it was gone. Skipper seemed to be so much more toick then just his best friend, some thought they had more of a homosexual relationship. Skipper seemed to be his life support. ick couldnt do anything without Skipper right there by his side. They did everything together, even Maggie was jealous of their relationship. Maggie was so jealous she tried to get between the two to rip apart their relationship, but at the last minute stopped and did not go through with her plan. Skipper was likeicks crutch, helped him along in everything life, work, school, sports everything. Then, suddenly one night, Skipper called foricks help andick could not give it to him. ick could not help his best friend and he died because of it. That was somethingick just could not live with, and he decided to stop living his life, as he knew it. He became bitter and unemotional towards everyone, even Maggie. He thought Maggie had lied to him about that night, so he seemed to begin to hate her. There seemed to be lies popping up all aroundick, Big Daddys health for example, and he could not stand it. He barely spoke. He drank all day, morning and night, until he heard that click in his head that made him forget everything.

Maggie and Big Daddy started to question his actions and he would have real short answers for them. Making sure not to say too much. ick was disappointed in himself for letting his best friend down and was disgusted with everyone else in his life for keeping all their secrets and telling all their lies. He could not stand the thought of him being the reason for his best friends death and tried to blame it on everyone else.

Towards the end of the play, ickeaks down and lets everything out. He tells Maggie and Big Daddy of all the feelings that he has been having that explain the way he has been acting. They try to help him understand that it is not his fault and Maggie explains that nothing happened that night between her and Skipper. ick still doesnt want to believe any of it. He goes on being stubborn and detached and still is not the person he once was. He does end up realizing what Maggie and Big Daddy are saying is the truth, but does not change his ways too much. He is still unemotional and bitter, but he starts to change his ways. I think he realizes that he was using Skipper as a crutch to live his life and he wants to change that, he wants to prove to himself that he can do things on his own.
