She engages in many requests to enliven her surroundings, but time and time again she is declined by her husband. �I don’t like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened onto the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it.” (Gilman, p.47) The treatment prescribed to his wife is from the beliefs of Weir Mitchell. The rest cure - used to calm one down. John’s wife is to remain in a completely relaxed state, refraining from any outside stimulus, perhaps ultimately resulting in an opposite effect. She is so alone, craving interaction with others, that she seeks out companionship from an illusion of a woman in the wallpaper in her room. She even becomes protective of this woman when she catches John and his sister looking at the wallpaper. Afraid that John and Jennie might take away her only friend, she convinces herself that no one will discover this woman, �but I know she was studying that pattern, and I am determined that nobody shall find it out but myself!” (Gilman, p.54) She feels akin to this woman, who is also trapped, just like herself. To better understand the imprisonment the protagonist feels, Gilman makes effective descriptions about the setting. �A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house”, (Gilman, p.446) leaves feelings of loneliness and desolation. To overcome depression, one would think that the opposite of isolation would make promise of a start to recovery - friends, family, outside stimuli, and positive influences would make one want to get better. These descriptions about setting help emphasize the isolation that John’s wife experiences. The aspect of the story that is most intriguing is the conflict between the two main characters. Despite the fact that they are married, John is the result of the isolation that his wife undergoes. Due to the era of the story, John is a dominating male, one who is labeled with power and superiority. He is a physician with the knowledge and stature of high-class. He is a man that is above and beyond the general public, and most definitely his wife. His wife is only a poor, misguided woman, incapable of making decisions and expressing her own feelings. She is a mindless human being. But is she really? John’s wife bows down to his wishes and is perceived as not having acceptable ideas of her own recovery. But are her ideas really unacceptable? The supposed different level of character creates a sense of isolation and segregation. Had John been on the same level as his wife, he might have been more sympathetic to her and made the proper adjustments better suited to a quick and promising recovery. However, having created an isolated environment for her to live in, only increased the level of isolation for his wife and made their relationship even more distant.

Ultimately, it is the isolationought upon by John, thatings about his wife’s downfall. We, the readers, know that she was not a mindless human being. Jonathan Edwards was born in 170 in East Windsor Connecticut. In 170, Edwards graduated from Yale. By twenty-two years of age, he became the assistant pastor and later the pastor of a church in Northampton, Massachusetts. Early on into his pastoral career, he struggled with the meaning of true revival. He wondered what he could do to get his congregation to experience revival. Edwards began a series of sermons with much prayer in order to wake up those that bad become too involved in outside business and everyday life and not with God. What followed were many widely known messages. In 171, he preached a message called, "God glorified in mans dependence." In this message, he preached that sin was a condition of ignorance. Wesley went to stand at his side when he preached. In 1740 Wesleys public appeals and preaching "subdued a riot amongst the colliers occasioned by the high price of corn". Charles Wesley is noted for changing the hearts of the people. The wealthy became more caring and the lower classes more respectful and civilized. Unfortunately, Charles Wesley was seemingly lost in hisothers shadow.

John Wesley was born in 170 in Epworth, England. He was later trained for the ministry at Oxford. He also joined hisother and assisted in the development of the "Holy Club". Wesley was one of the greatest men of God in modern history. He is credited, with hisother, for a great revivalism, which saved England. It was Wesley who said, "Give me one hundred men who love only God with all their heart and hate only sin with all their heart, and we will shake the gates of hell anding in the kingdom of God in one generation". Wesley was eventually barred from preaching in many churches because of this doctrine. Wesley preached powerfully, but was uncertain of his own salvation after this. Heiefly entertained the idea to discontinue preaching. On March 6, 178 John Wesley unwillingly left for a society to preach a new doctrine. There, the revelation of faith was so strong that in his heart that not only did his life change but he saw multitudes stream into the "kingdom of God with signs and wonders following". Soon, Wesley was preaching in open fields to many who never frequented a church building. John Wesley was witness to Gods power and saw thousands saved at one time.

But if we are blessed with the light of knowledge we will be able to see plainly the clear path of Islam at every step of our lives. We shall also be able to identify and avoid the dangerous paths of Kufr, Shirk and immorality, which may cross it. And, whenever a false guide meets us on the way, a few words with him will quickly establish that he is not a guide who should be followed.

On this knowledge depends whether our children and we are true Muslims and remain true Muslims. It is therefore not a trivial to be neglected. We do not neglect doing whatever is essential to improve our trades and professions. Because we know that if we do neglect, we will starve to death and so lose the precious gift of life. Why then should we be negligent in acquiring that knowledge on which depends whether we become Muslims and remain Muslims? Does such negligence not entail the danger of losing an even more precious gift? our Iman? Is not Iman more precious than life itself?

Most of our time and labor is spent on things, which sustain our physical existence in this life. Why can we not spend even a tenth part of our time and energy on things, which are necessary to protect our Iman, which only can sustain us in the present life and in the life to come? It is not necessary to study extensively to become a Muslim. We should at least spend about one hour out of twenty-four hours of the day and night in acquiring the knowledge of this Deen, the way of life, the Islam.

Every one of man, woman, or us, young or old should at least acquire sufficient knowledge to enable ourselves to understand the essence of the teachings of the Quran and the purpose for which it has been sent down.

We should also be able to understand clearly the mission, which our beloved Prophet (S) came into this world to fulfill. We should also recognize the corrupt order and system, which he came to destroy. We should acquaint ourselves, too, with the way of life, which Allah has ordained for us.

No great amount of time is required to acquire this simple knowledge. If we truly value Iman, it cannot be too difficult to find one hour every day to devote for our Iman.

Knowledge is identified in Islam as worship. The acquiring of knowledge is worship, reading the Quran and pondering upon it is worship, traveling to gain knowledge is worship. The practice of knowledge is connected with ethics and morality? With promoting virtue and combating vice, enjoining right and forbidding wrong. This is called in the Quran amr bil-l maruuf wa nah-y ani-l munkar.

Not only should we seek knowledge, but when we learn it, it becomes obligatory on us to practice it. Though we must remember that correct knowledge should come before correct action. Knowledge without action is useless because a learned person without action will be the worst of creatures on the Day of Resurrection. Also, action should not be based on blind imitation for this is not the quality of a thinking, sensible human being.

Knowledge is pursued and practiced with modesty and humility and leads to beauty and dignity, freedom and justice.

The main purpose of acquiring knowledge is toing us closer to God. It is not simply for the gratification of the mind or the senses. It is not knowledge for the sake of knowledge or science for the value of sake.

Knowledge accordingly must be linked with values and goals. One of the purposes of acquiring knowledge is to gain the good of this world, not to destroy it through wastage, arrogance and in the reckless pursuit of higher standards of material comfort. Another purpose of knowledge is to spread freedom and dignity, truth and justice. It is not to gain power and dominance for its own sake.

Obviously, what we may call the reservoir of knowledge is deep and profound. It is a vast and open field that is not limited.

It is impossible for anyone to gain anything more than a fraction of what there is to know in the short span of ones life. We must therefore decide what is most important for us to know and how to go about acquiring this knowledge.

The following ahadith shows how important and how rewarding knowledge is He who acquires knowledge acquires a vast portion. AND If anyone going on his way in search of knowledge, God will, thereby make easy for him the way to Paradise.

We, the children, are the future. The future lies in our hands, but only through knowledge because whoever neglects learning in youth loses the past and is dead for the future.

May Allah (SWT) give us strength to behave and act just as He likes us to do and be pleased with us, and that should be the purpose of our lives.
