Title The Cask of AmontilladoAuthor Edgar Allan Poe
About the Author Born in Boston January 1,180. Died October 7,184 in Baltimore.
Plot Summary In The Cask of Montillado Montressor leads his enemy, Fortunado into
his vaults to taste a rare, fine sherry. After luring Fortunado there Montressor chains
him up and then proceeds to build a wall and traps him in the vaults.
Characterization The story mentions many characters but the story is based on Montressor, the
diabolical narrator of the story.
Point of View Edgar Allen Poe writes this story from the perspective of Montressor who seeks revenge
agains Fortinato in an effort to support his time-honored family motto Nemo me impune lacessit
(No one can attack me without being punished) I dont think that Montressor was one that could be sympathized with.
I think we were to judge the character. The reader is invited into the sinister mind of a killer.
Setting The story begins at dusk during the carnival season in an unnamed European city. The location
changes from fun and laughter to at the carnival to dark and dreary courters.
Tone The tone is dark and dreary. Montressor seeks revenge on his enemy. Resulting in trickory and death.
Style This is a story about a premeditated murder. One quickly becomes awareof Montressors intentions.
You see that Montressor holds grudges and may not be a reliable narrator. Things are eggagerated terribly,
such as Montressors comment about the thousand injuries that he suffered at the hands of Fortunato...but
when Fortunato ventured upon insult, Montressor could stand no more and vowed revenge.
Montressor tried to convince the reader that he has honorable reasons and nothing but good intentions in
seeking revenge, trying to uphold his family motto. Nemo me impune lacessit. There are many examples of
irony in the story. The character says one thing and means another.
Theme The Cask of Montillado is a tale of revenge. The narrator Montressor seekd revenge upon Fortunato because
he insulted him. Montressor wants Fortunato to know what is happening to him. He gainds pleasure from the fact that
as Fortunato slowly dies, and sobers with terror realizing his opportunites of escape. Fortunato will also realize
that his love for wine has lead him to his death. There is no doubt that both Montressors plan of revenge and Poes story
are carefully crafted to reflect desire.
Symbolism The Amontillado was a symbol of the family motto that Montillado so desperately wanted to protect and honor.
The wine was a key symbol in this story. It showed pleasure and desire so quickly turned to misfortune and death.
