When Hale is telling her she is not humble enough to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, Malama informs him she will find humility when he does.

Both lovely and hearteaking are her scenes when she tries to integrate her wish to become a Christian with her love for herother/husband. No better man, all these Islands, she states, when she is told she cannot be a Christian and still remain married to herother. His love and devotion for her are apparent, and she decides that she has plenty of time before she dies to set him aside and state she is a sinner. She cannot comprehend the fact that loving a man who has treated her well her entire life would be considered a sin, and while Hale is disgusted by this custom, Jerusha takes pity and feels deeply for them.

Malama takes an instant liking to the adorable puny white women, in particular Jerusha whom she chooses to be her personal teacher. When Hale insists that this is entirely inappropriate, she dismisses him by knocking him aside with one of her massive arms. Inside Malamas hut, Jerusha is worked to exhaustion by Malamas insistence that she will learn how to write within one month, finally fainting dead. During her swoon Malama discovers Jerusha is newly pregnant, a condition that deeply worries the local Doctor. Its apparent that Jerusha is a frail and fragile person, and Hale is strongly advised to send her home immediately as childbirth is extremely dangerous to her. Hale refuses; he is sure that God will take care of her entirely. Hale shows incredibly arrogance and stupidity during the harrowing childbirth scene when he refuses the assistance of native midwives and insists on delivering his child himself.

Jerushas submissiveness to her husband becomes annoying at times, as its obvious she is an intelligent and thinking woman. At the end of the film however she makes up for this in spades, when she gives her husband a well-deserved tongue lashing regarding his arrogance and racism. She informs him that as far as she is concerned, if his view of Christianity is the only true view, then she can no longer consider herself a Christian. Jerusha refuses to believe that any Hawaiian would be denied entry to the Kingdom of Heaven because they werent converted, as she believes that they are naturally filled with Gods Grace.

Hales character is intriguing to the end, and you cant help but utterly despise him and his oafish attempts at converting the Hawaiians. Ignoring the fact that their beautiful religion had served them well for thousands of years, ignoring the inherent beauty, goodness, grace and natural spirituality they portray, Hale instead shows his disgust again and again at their religion and customs. While some customs are difficult to accept, such asother-sister marriage and the infanticide of deformed or sick babies, it should be noted that such customs have been practiced by many tribal peoples - including the Northern European tribal ancestors of the disapproving Reverend Hale. While Jerusha tries to minister by example, service and love of God, Hale bellows and blusters his way through every situation. His arrogance in telling Keoki that he will never ordain him as a Minister because he isnt white is the final straw that makes Keoki turn away from the Church and back to his native religion, marrying his sister who will become the new High Priestess.

By the end of the movie though, its important to note that the already enlightened Reverend Whipple has left the Church due to his view of their treatment of the Hawaiian people, and Reverend Hale shows a true spiritual awakening. Realizing that a large sin is being committed against the Hawaiians by the appropriation of their land, his end mission is devoted to helping them keep ownership of that which defines and validates them -- their connection to the natural world. At the end of his life, he seems more filled with the Spirit of God than the written Word of God, and in his old age becomes as endearing as he was when courting Jerusha. You truly believe that God works through him in the end, and you believe his heart is as open and pure as the Hawaiians he now emaces. He ministers with love, example and service instead of intimidation and condemnation.

The film does contain two irritants that are more an indication of the year rather than the story line itself. There is a silly and unbelievable coincidental meeting between Jerusha and her lost Captain love that stretches the imagination. Also its annoying to see a film that explores racism show racist tendencies of its own, as in Hollywood at the time it was acceptable to show the bare bodies of nonwhite women - and this is exploited at every chance. These two faults notwithstanding, this film remains a classic and is highly recommended to anyone wishing to watch an old-fashioned Hollywood epic that educates as it entertains.

I was looking in my fridge the other day and although I just wanted a glass of something cold and a snack, I suddenly became confused and suspicious. As I reached for the juice, I wondered Is it pure? Does it have any artificial coloring? Perhaps I should just grab a can of pop. Uh oh, too much sugar. What about a slice of cheese? Constipation! I know, Ill just have a glass of milk, natures perfect food. But wait! Didnt I read something about milk being not so perfect anymore? ("Whats the matter with milk?")

"Milk, What a Surprise," is the tag line from the National Fluid Milk Processors, the add agency for Americas Dairy Industry. The point of that phrase is obvious Milk Mustaches are stylish. Milk makes you strong and beautiful. Models, actors, actresses, sports stars, and singers likeitney Spears all have campaigned for milk. When you look up all you see are theiroad smiles with milk mustaches with the catch phrase, "Got Milk?" These campaigns give us the impression that Americans need milk. Americans love milk.

Rumor ahs it that by drinking milk can to be beneficial to your health. It has been said that by drinking milk, you reduce your risk of osteoporosis, hypertension, and colon cancer. It has also been shown that milk reduces the risk of kidney stones. Today, there are so many different types of different milk that satisfy consumers taste, nutrition, and health. These milks vary in fat content and lactose content. Some have different types of vitamins or even calcium. There is whole milk, which contains about .5% milk fat and 8.5% solids-not-fat. It is optional to add vitamins A and D. Low fat milk contains 0.5, 1.5, or % milk fat and about 8.5% solids-not-fat. Fat free milk, also called skim milk, contains less than 0.5% milk fat and about 8.5% solids-not-fat. Vitamin A has to be added but it is optional to add Vitamin D. "Milk is made up of 87.4% water and 1.6% milk solids (.7% fat, 8.% milk solids-not-fat). There are also many types of specialty milks, which are what I like to call fake milk. One type is reduced lactose milk. In this type of milk, a lot of the lactose content in milk is extracted. This milk is made at a processing plant by adding the liquid enzyme lactase to pasteurized milk and storing it for 4 hours. After that is done, it has to go through many more processes so that it has .% of its lactose hydrolyzed. That is when milk is considered lactose free. (Oski, 1) Then there are imitation and substitute milks. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this type of milk does not meet the nutritional standard of real milk. That is why it is called imitation milk. There is also organic milk. Organic milk comes from cows that have been fed and raised without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, and hormones. Although store bought milk is totally fake, there are other negative aspects to milk. Milk can get you sick. Not sick with something simple like a cold, but sick as in deadly sick. There are eight great reasons to eliminate milk from your diet. Jennifer Keller, a nutritionist from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine confirms that theory.

Dairy Products have been shown to cause chronic ear infection in kids. Milk has also been shown to cause children to have asthma. Not only has it been shown to give men prostate cancer but it also can cause ovarian cancer in women. Although milk companies say that milk prevents osteoperosis, is has not been clinically proven. Its amazing that a major company can endorse something so deadly.

Milk is overly praised for preventing osteoporosis, but clinical research shows otherwise. The Harvard Nurses Health Study followed 75,000 women for 1 years. The study showed that drinking milk did not protect these women from fracture risk. Other studies were done like the one above and they all had the same end result.

Milk plays a big role in contributing cholesterol and fat to your diet. When your diet is high in fat you increase your risk of getting cardiovascular disease. The consumption of milk has been linked to a lot of cancers, such as ovarian cancer. "The milk sugar lactose isoken down in the body into another sugar, glactose. In turn, glactose isoken down further enzymes…when dairy product consumption exceeds the enzyme capacity toeak down glactose, it can build up in the blood and may affect a womans ovaries." It affects approximately 5 percent of Asian Americans, 74 percent of Native Americans, 70 percent of African Americans, 5 percent of Mexican Americans, and 15 percent of Caucasians. Because the cow is producing more milk than they are supposed to, the cow develops mastitis, which is the inflammation of the mammary glands. There is also a concern that the child may develop colic. Many allergies have been linked to drinking milk. Milk also has been shown to cause constipation in children. Milk has also been shown to cause certain types of cancer likeeast cancer and ovarian cancer. An example of the effects on milk on cancer comes from Your Life in Your Hands by Jane Plant. In this book, Jane Plant, the Chief Scientist of theitish Geological Survey, was diagnosed witheast cancer. She went into remission five times already and was getting the symptoms of her cancer back the fifth time. Because the cancer was not healing, the doctors told her of the possible reasons she may have cancer. The factors involved ineast cancer are a genetic predisposition, total lifetime exposure to the female hormone estrogen, total animal fat consumption, personality type, and stress. (Plant, 6) After being told that, she quickly went over all of these factors. First, she thought about her genetic predisposition. She came to the realization that this did not apply to her because none of her family members suffered with any type of cancer. When she thought about the estrogen factor, she realized that its "more likely that estrogen promoteseast cancer only when another more fundamental factor, or factors, has caused the bodys chemistry to malfunction." (same, 6) Her fat intake was fairly low because for the majority of her life, she ate healthy. So that factor did not apply to her. "American psychotherapist Lawrence LeShan has suggested that the type of person who internalizes stress is more likely to suffer from cancer." (same, 6) Plant said that yes, she suffered from stress, but not more than the average person. So that couldnt be the reason, or else everyone would have cancer. After going through all of the factors, she realized that none of them really applied to her. She "felt that, somewhere there had to be another factor," (same, 70) that she had to find.

Then something happened, Plants husband went to China andought her back herbal suppositories that were supposed to help with her cancer. When she got the suppositories, she thought they must work because; a lot less people have cancer in China than in America. So she began to think Why? After studying Chinese habits, a light went off in her head, "The Chinese dont eat dairy products!" ( same, 78) So after realizing that, she decided to try giving up all dairy products. That included cheese, butter, milk, yogurt, and anything else containing milk. The results were remarkable

Within days, the lump started to shrink. About two weeks after my second chemotherapy session and one week after I gave up dairy products, the lump in my neck started to itch, and then it began to soften and to reduce in size. The line on the graph, which had shown no change, was now pointing downward as the tumor got smaller. And very significantly, I noted that instead of declining exponentially […] as cancer is meant to do, the tumors decrease in size plotted on a straight line headed off the bottom of the graph, indicating a cure, not just suppression or remission of the tumor. Gilgameshs mother, Ninsun, said to him, "Like a wife youll love him, caress and emace him, he will be mighty, and often save you" (I. 71-7). Gilgamesh has finally found his match, a friend who will serve as his life long companion. This new seal of friendship will cause a change in Gilgameshs selfish ways. Setting aside his great pride and power, Gilgamesh opens a place in his heart for his belovedother, Enkidu.

After the death of Gilgameshsotherly companion, Enkidu, there is a significant change in his view of life. Gilgamesh cannot bear the loss of someone so special to him. Despite his tremendous amount of power and leadership, something in his life is missing. Gilgamesh weeps for seven days and nights, thinking that his friend would come back "On this very day I myself shall mourn you! Hear me, O young men, hear me! Hear me, O elders of teeming Uruk, hear me! I shall weep for Enkidu, my friend, like a hired mourner-woman I shall bitterly wail" (VIII. 41-45). It is during this period of the story that one can truly see the sympathetic and compassionate side of Gilgamesh. The grief in his heart has far exceeded the magnificent pride that he has previously displayed to the people of Uruk. With the death of his best friend, Gilgamesh is distraught with grief and denial. Not only is he miserable over the loss of Enkidu but also over his own death, which he knows will come some day "I shall die, and shall I not then be as Enkidu? Sorrow has entered my heart!
