Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie was born on November 5, 185 in Dunfermline, Scotland. His father, Will Carnegie, was a very skilled and experienced weaver. The Carnegies were one of the many working families in Scotland. In 184, Andrewsother, Tom was born. In 1847, Richard Guest invented the steam-loom which put many people including Will Carnegie out of business. That next year the Carnegies emigrated to the United States in pursuit of bigger and better dreams.

Emigrating to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was not the only good thing that happened to Andrew but the fact that it opened up to him numerous dreams and opportunities. "Andrew begins work as a bobbin boy in a textile mill, earning $1.0 per week" (Carnegie.org 00). In that same yea Andrew quits his other job and works for eighty cents more tending steam-engines and boilers. Succeeding in his job, his supervisor offered him a job as a clerk for the factory. In 184 Andrew continued changing jobs from time to time. Since he came to the United States in 1848, Andrew had been a bobbin boy and a tender. Now Andrew would find a job that would last him four years. As soon as he was employed as a messenger for a telegraph company. Running messages for a week made him $.50. He began to memorize the names of the people who he had taken messages and also their addresses. Memorizing names, faces and addresses decreased the time that it took to deliver messages. Doing this impressed his employer and he was promoted to telegraph operator and making $0 a month instead of $10.

Andrew liked what being a telegraph messenger had in store for him. He liked it so much that he started working for Thomas Scott as his assistant. Thomas Scott was a superintendent for the Pennsylvania Railroads western division. Andrew was moving around a lot delivering Thomass personal telegraphs. Thomas paid him thirty-five dollars a month. Earning thirty-five dollars a month was a trustable living for Richard. Being a quick learner, Richard learned about the railroad business. What little did he know that two years later would be a hard time for him and his family.
