There are several characters in this play some of these characters are Lucentio and Petrucio who are determine to marry two sisters Bianca and Katherine, their so called love is so strong for these two sisters that they appear to be people who they are not. In this play written by William Shakespeare he uses appearance as a tool to obtain love and marriage from Katherine and Bianca using the characters of Lucentio and Petrucio. Could love and the desire of marriage be so strong that will lead you to lie about your appearance to the one you love or the one you wish to marry? Well, that is what happens in this play. It all begins in the city of Padua with two young sisters Bianca and Katherine. Apparently Biancas gentle behavior is unkind, through out the play she is a disobedient wife. Katherine who is called a shrew even by her father Baptisa has a deeper character than what she seems to appear. Baptisas preference for Bianca result to Katherines hurt and seeks for revenge.

In this play we find several characters that appear to be someone they are not in order to obtain love and marriage for the one they desire. One of these characters is Lucentio a wealthy man from Pisa who arrives to Padua with his servants, Tranio and Biondello to study. He sees and falls in love with Bianca. Lucentio in disguise offers himself to Baptisa as a tutor for Bianca. He marries Bianca after going through some difficult task in order for them to get married. To distract Baptisas attention from Lucentio, Tranio becomes another suitor for Bianca assuming Lucentios identity. Baptisa Informs two other Characters Gremio and Tranio that whichever one of them offers the finest money or property that a womanings her husband when she marries him may have Bianca in marriage. Tranio wins out, but Baptisa says that he musting Lucentio fathers agreement to the property that a womanings to her husband in marriage. Since its a large amount and he does not believe Vicentio will be a part of it. Lucentio in the disguise of a suitor declares his love to Bianca. Later Bianca finds her selfs in love with Lucentio. Lucentio love and desire to marry Bianca is so strong that he uses the tool of appearance to obtain what he wants. So, they get married. Bianca and Lucentio are a typical pair of immature lovers who only think about themselves and each other considers his individual wishes before those of his beloved. We can see that between these two people there is a marriage with out care, dedication and without love although the reason they got married was because of love. And it appears that the role of Lucentio- Bianca has change to the one of Petruchio-Katherines role. They married because they were in love but their marriage doesnt seem to be going as of two people who love each other. In the other hand Petruchio and Katherine who married with out love now appears to be a happy marriage with love.

The other character that marries just because, is Petruchio who arrives from the country with his servant Grumio, trying to find himself a wife. He visits his friend Hortensio, who jokingly suggest to marry Katherine. Petruchio replies that her fortune is enough for him, regardless of her personality. Petruchio introduces himself to Baptisa as a suitor of Katherine, they hold a private conversation and later he sets a wedding date, although Katherine strongly objects. Petruchio arrives to his wedding very late and ridiculously dressed. After marrying Katherine Petruchio turns in to someone cruel. He refuses to let Katherine eat or sleep. He demand perfection in house cleaning to Katherine. Petruchio is taming his wife as he would tame an animal. Petruchio, Katherine and Hortensio are on their way to Baptisas house. On the way Petruchio says howight the moon is , and Katherine tells him that it is the sun rather than the moon. Petruchio replies that it is what he wants it to be or they will return to home and not go to Padua. Katherine agrees with him that the sun is the moon. "…be it the moon, or sun, or what you please to call it a rush-candle, Henceforth I vow it shall be so for me".( The taming of the shrew, Act. 4.5, lines 15-17, Pg. 187). This line shows how Katherine has turn from a shrew to an obedient wife. Katherine discovers that her husband loves her enough to attempt to change her for her own good as well for his. Although Petrucio appears to be rough, noisy, and insensitive, one who care nothing for Katherines feelings so long as she has money, yet in the inside Petruchios intentions is not interested in the money but the challenge of capturing her because of her reputation.

Love and marriage are the concerns of Shakespeares Taming of the Shrew. The play offers different methods of treating a woman and choosing a mate and then coming to marriage with the mate that one has chosen. We see the difference of petruchio-katherine and Lucentio-Biancas marriage. The so called couple (Lucentio-Bianca) in love married and are not so happy with their marriage and the other couple (Petruchio-Katherine) who married with out love now seen to be happy. The roles switched. The unhappy Katherine discovers how to be happy. Petruchio has marry Katherine after all the complicating situation he went through, because he chose Katherine and obtained marriage with Katherine using the tool of appearance of being someone who he is not. And so the same situation with Lucentio who also uses the tool of appearance to obtain marriage with the one he has chosen although their marriage is not one of two people who love each other. Love and the desire of marriage can be so strong that will lead you to lie about your appearance to the one you love or the one you wish to marry.
